Tule Author Q&A: Melissa McClone’s hometown was her inspiration!

Melissa McClone stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the fourth book in the Silver Falls series, A Sprinkle of Spring!

Where did you get the inspiration for the town of Silver Falls?

I live in a small town in Washington, very similar to Silver Falls. So let’s just say my hometown provided much of the inspiration. Instead of a First Avenue, we have Fourth Avenue. The Boo Bash in A Cup of Autumn? The shops here do something similar each year. We don’t have a Christmas decorating window competition, though.

So what I did was fictionalize my town and make it more perfect, as far as small towns go. I only wish we had the same shops Silver Falls did with those owners. I mean, who wouldn’t want one of Raine’s special hot cocoas? The yummy desserts that Taryn makes for Larsen’s Bakery (ours closed, but there is a new sweets shop that just opened.) Or buy the organic dog treats from Callie’s doggy daycare for their fur pup?

What 3 words would you use to describe Flynn and Anna so readers can get to know them better?

Flynn: arrogant, generous, workaholic

Anna: kind-hearted, giving, nurturing

four dogs on parkThis book features a dog grooming heroine and her many pets. Are you an animal lover and do you have any pets?

I am an animal lover. I have a dog, a Norwegian Elkhound named Cato, and two black cats, Yoda and Beauty. I’ve also fostered cats and volunteered at a local animal rescue as Anna does in the book. At one point we had two dogs and eight cats with all the fosters, but it is hard to say no when there’s an animal in need of a place to recover or spend their final days.

To be honest, I can’t imagine a house without an animal. They are members of our family, only they have four legs instead of two.

Did you need to do any kind of research for this book?

Yes, I did! I did a bunch of research into the life of a surgeon. I realized so much depends on where they are and what they do. Some work privately and contract with hospitals, others work for hospitals. It was very interesting, but I found I could take some leeway for my story, which I did with Flynn.

I researched injuries that occur from falls (don’t want to give away any spoilers so that’s all I’ll say!)

I also went down a rabbit hole researching baby showers. It’s been a while since I attended one, so I wanted to see if they’d changed. I read articles on the games and themes and it was so much fun. Oh, boy, there are some cute baby things out there. Needless to say, I put together an entire baby shower for this book, even though I didn’t mention everything I had put down.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading Relationtrip by Elana Johnson. It’s a standalone travel romance written in first person POV. I’m not far into the book, but I’m enjoying it.

Max would love to build a family with Millie, though he wishes it was because she wanted him, not just his child. But not everything goes to plan, and when feelings grow and disaster strikes, will Max and Millie’s hopes for a future go up in flames?

Tule Author Q&A: Melissa McClone prefers hot chocolate to coffee

Melissa McClone stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in the Silver Falls series, A Cup of Autumn!

Where did you get the inspiration for A Cup of Autumn?

A Cup of Autumn is book 3 in my Silver Falls series. When I wrote the first one, the heroine had three brothers so I had in my mind they would each take place in a different season. I also was trying to decide which of her friends would match with which brother. The coffee shop owner, Raine, and the professor, Keaton, seemed like it would be a fun story. Most of the stories have some event happening in them, so I tried to come up with something fall-related. I live in a small town and they have a trick-or-treating event at businesses in town so I decided to use that

Free Cup of Brown Coffee Stock PhotoIf you visited Raine’s coffee shop, what would you order?

I don’t drink coffee, so I would get one of her hot chocolates. They are loaded with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. I’m sure I could get her to add a little chocolate sauce and a candy cane in it, too!

If you could spend the day with Keaton or Raine, who would you choose and what would you do?

I would spend the day with Raine. I’d ask her to teach me how to make all her wonderful coffee drinks and how to do the latte art because my husband is a coffee lover. I’d love to surprise him with something special. He was my test tester for a recipe of hers I made up for a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

I loved when Keaton offers to help Raine organize the Boo Bash. This is what will bring them together (besides his sending resumes and writing in the coffee shop each day). It was just fun because he’s a bit out of his element trying not to be and she’s a bit in shock over the offer since she’s desperate for help. It was just fun to write and showed me these two opposites could have an HEA after a rather rocking start when he first arrives in town.

Here’s a snippet:

“Hey. I didn’t see you come in.” Raine had been focused on making sure Heather left. “Sorry for the wait.”

“Not a problem. Quite a morning you’ve had.”

“How much did you see?”

“Enough. You okay?” Keaton asked, his tone concerned.

“Yes.” But her staffing issues might be behind her. A warm, fuzzy feeling, as if she’d sipped a hot cocoa drizzled with hot fudge sauce and candy cane sprinkles, flowed through her. “An Americano this morning?”

“I want to try another pumpkin spice drink. Something different from the lattes yesterday.”

“There’s plenty to choose from on the menu.”

“Surprise me again.”

“Living dangerously?”

“It appears so.”

She ran through the pumpkin spice drinks. “I know exactly what you need.”

“And so do I.” His face reddened. “I mean what you need.”

Her heart thudded.

Whoa.

That was a strange reaction. Keaton’s words sounded a little flirty. But he wouldn’t, would he?

His smile wavered. “I want to offer my services.”

The words hung in the air between them.

Raine thought she’d heard him correctly but maybe not. “Your what?”

“My services.”

O-kay. Except it wasn’t. “You lost me. Not surprising given you’re a professor and I’m me, but what services?”

Because after yesterday, she couldn’t imagine him working for her as a barista. Strike that. She could imagine it. He couldn’t. Wouldn’t. Of that, she was one hundred percent certain.

“At dinner with my family the Boo Bash came up,” he clarified.

“You mean, the thorn in my side.”

“How would you like help pulling out that thorn?”

She was missing something. It wouldn’t be the first time given how long she’d missed the signs of Emmett’s unhappiness in Silver Falls and with her. “Huh?”

“I want to help you organize the Boo Bash.”

The words rushed out as if he were nervous, so much that Boo Bash sounded like one word. The result was adorable.

He adjusted his glasses. “That is, if you want help organizing it.”

“Are you kidding? They gave me a bin of stuff, and I haven’t opened it. The event is four weeks away, but I have no idea where to start. No time…”

It was her turn for the words to gush out one on top of another. She didn’t care. An unlikely hero was stepping in, and she couldn’t be more grateful.

“I’d love your help. Like love it so much you’re my new best friend, and I want to name a tea blend or coffee drink after you.”

He laughed. “There’s no need for the latter, but a person can never have too many friends.”

She nodded, back and forth as if her head had turned into a rocking chair. “Like I said we have some time…”

“I’m the planning type so what if we get started sooner rather than later?”

Raine needed the help. Somehow, she would have to make time to work on the Boo Bash. “Sure, when?”

“Today.”

She swallowed.

He laughed. “Don’t look so worried. The Boo Bash doesn’t have to be built in a day, but it’ll be October soon.”

“I didn’t realize I looked worried.”

“When your eyebrows draw together, little lines form above your nose. That suggests worrying. Or at least contemplation. And not in a positive way.”

“No one’s mentioned that before.” She touched the spot to double-check. “I was worrying.”

“Stop. You’re no longer on your own.”

With each of his words, her stress lessened.

“I’m working here this morning,” Keaton continued. “When things slow down, we can discuss the first steps. How does that sound?”

Like she wanted to drop to her knee and propose on the spot.

Okay, not really, they were too different, but a part of her was in shock. The other part would be eternally grateful to him. “Sure. Sounds great. Thanks. Your drinks are on the house.”

Tule Author Q&A: Melissa McClone wants eclairs from her heroine’s bakery!

Melissa McClone stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the second book in her Silver Falls series, A Slice of Summer!

Where did you get the inspiration for A Slice of Summer?

A Slice of Summer is a sequel to The Christmas Window so I knew when I created Taryn, who worked at Lawson’s Bakery, that she would be the next heroine. I just hadn’t decided which of the Andrews brothers was the one for her.

As for the situation with the bakery, I wanted to have some sort of trouble there so we could see Taryn’s strength. Of course, this led to trouble on different levels—with her father and with a new competitor in the next town over.

And I’ll be honest, I loved watching shows like L.A. Law and the Practice. I’ve always wanted to write a hero who could have been a character on one of them. I only show a little snippet or two of Garrett’s occupation, those series were the inspiration for him.

How do you relate to Taryn, your heroine, and how do you hope readers will relate to her? How do you relate to Garrett?

Taryn works hard and wants to do the best job she can at the bakery and as a daughter. I see that in myself with my writing and being a wife and mom of three. Also, my father wasn’t that supportive of me quitting my engineering job to write romance, so I totally relate to her issues with her dad thinking she’s not the right person to run the bakery. Oh, I can be stubborn like her, too!

I hope readers will understand Taryn’s motivations to want to take-over the bakery fully and that her goal/desire will be relatable to them, too. Many of us have thought our lives would be one way until someone tries to step in and change things. And roadblocks to our dreams can come in many forms, but it’s up to us to continue to go after what we want or let go of that dream.

As for Garrett, he’s a strong alpha-male, who does what he thinks is best. He and Taryn share that trait, and so do I. But sometimes “best” isn’t always “right” and that’s something we have to learn through experience and time.

Top view composition of sweet vanilla eclairs topped with hazelnuts and placed on brown table amidst chocolate marshmallow and coffee beansIf you went to Taryn’s bakery, what dessert/pastry could you not leave without?

Oh, boy. I’d probably walk out with boxes and boxes of things, but I’d want to have one of her eclairs. I love them. I’m sure Taryn and her staff would put their own twist on it.

This is a sweet second chance romance. What drew you to this trope? What’s your favorite trope to write?

I love the idea of a relationship not going right the first time whether it be one date or several, and then the couple getting a second chance to try again in the future. Sometimes it’s not just the timing or circumstances that are wrong. But later (weeks, months, or years), we’re at a different place emotionally and can make a go of it. This happened with my husband, and we’ve been married twenty-five years. I’ve used the trope in several books. I love it that much. I’d say second chance and friends-to-lovers are my favorite tropes to write.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading a non-fiction book called Deep Point of View (Busy Writer’s Guide) by Marcy Kennedy.

She moves to Whiskey River and reinvents herself as “Mary,” a serious and plain librarian. Her only indulgence is her garden and cooking with her neighbor’s young daughter. And then she meets Brice.

The Tremaynes of Texas, Book 2

She’s on the run…

On a storm-ravaged night, Texas rancher Truitt Tremayne is trying to make it home before the road floods. Years ago he lost his parents, fiancée and youngest brother in a flash flood on the same country road, so it seems like déjà vu when he nearly hits a stranded car with a beautiful woman and her sister trapped inside.

Annie Sims and her sister Jessie are running from their past. She’s headed to San Antonio where they can disappear, but bad luck follows them. With her funds depleted and her car useless, Truitt’s offer of a temporary sanctuary with no questions asked seems too good to be true. Soon Annie finds herself falling under the spell of the kind, silent rancher. But can she let her guard down and still keep her sister safe, or is she courting more danger?

Truitt knows Annie has a secret. He wants her trust, but can he give his heart to another woman after he’s already lost so much?
