BLOOD THINNERS: Release day blog post featuring Heather Novak!

Blood Thinners is finally here! Do you ever just sit back and stare at your life in disbelief? I’m doing that right now as I hold this book in my hand.

Blood Thinners started as a bunch off off-the-wall what-if questions between myself and my former coworkers. “If you had to drink one flavor of milkshake every day for your life, what would it be? What if everyone we worked with was secretly a ghost? Werewolf? Vampire? Shapeshifter? What if this company was a way to recruit new humans into their ranks and you were the only one who knew what was truly going on?”

An amazing book idea formed but, two weeks before my last book release in September 2019, I received some devastating medical news. We didn’t know what my future would look like, and I hung up my writing shoes (writing keyboard? writing gloves?) for a year.

September 2020 was the epic turning point. During my writing hiatus, I came out as bisexual and wanted to start writing openly LGBTQ+ romances, so I pitched an idea to an agent. When I tell you it couldn’t have gone worse… Think green bean and cranberry Jello casserole, in the rain, while wearing a white dress bad. (Yes, that is a The Lizzie Bennet Diaries reference, thanks for noticing)

I closed my computer, told my partner I was done with writing, and sat down to watch this new show called Julie and the Phantoms, a musical by the amazing Kenny Ortega. At one in the morning, I was standing on the couch, yelling at a ghost band and crying tears of joy. I realized this was what I wanted to write, beautiful stories of love and grief and gay ghosts and mystery.

A friend of mine, who I met through the show, challenged me to write flash fiction and I played with the original Blood Thinners idea based on her prompts. The rest, as they say, was history. Through my writer’s group, I had the opportunity to pitch to Jane Porter and I’ll never forget how excited she was for this book. I’m so thankful Tule saw my vision and let me run jump into a golf cart and speed off into the sunset with it.

So here is my beautiful romance that deals with being human while surrounded by supernatural creatures—yes, including gay ghosts—complete with a mystery. And don’t forget the demon who loves sweaters. He already has his own fan club.

I hope that readers find a safe space in my book, especially if they’re LGBTQ+, use mobility aids, feel trapped in a life situation, if their closest family is found family, or even if they realize they’re just as weird as I am.
