Dogs, horses, and baby cows – OH, MY! Leah Vale talks animals for her latest release in her ‘Grit and Grace’ series (PLUS, an excerpt!)

Dogs and horses…

Throw in a baby cow and I’m yours. Seriously. Nothing in this world makes me happier (sorry kids).

Growing up, my time was gladly spent with my spirited quarter horse mare and the black angus calves who shared her pasture. We won’t talk about why the calves had been purchased, but I will admit to being responsible for them not fattening up the way they should have and needing longer before going to market. Nothing like a girl and her born and bred cutting horse to keep cattle trim and fit.

While my current life only includes one of the above loves, a golden retriever who rules my world, I do my best to keep my writing life brimming with dogs, horses, baby cows, and of course, cowboys.

I went all in with the third book in my Grit and Grace series. There is a stray dog needing to be rescued by Beth Dawson, the caretaker of the Grit and Grace bunch, a newborn calf to protect, trustworthy horses, and a very hot but a little grumpy cowboy to make the night under the vast Texas Hill Country sky more interesting…

Panic rising in her throat, Beth was already climbing out of the truck. She shut the door on Sammie’s protest and started down the knoll as fast as she dared, a hand planted on her black cowboy hat. Her work-worn cowboy boots skidded in the loose, rocky soil and she had to watch out for grassy clumps that would send her tumbling head over teakettle.

As much as she loved her Grit and Grace partners, she loved the animals who also called this huge ranch home a smidge more. It was just how she was wired. Whether they were rodeo rough stock owned outright by her and her friends or the saddle horses and longhorns they leased from Asher Halliday, the billion-dollar oil dynasty heir who owned the ranch, Beth loved them equally. If one of the heifers was sick or in distress of some kind, it didn’t deserve to simply be shot. There had to be an alternative.

There had to be some way she could help the animal.

Her heart already pounding, Beth broke into a run the second she hit relatively flat ground. As she closed the distance between them, uncaring where her booted feet landed now, she could see Justin unzipping the case and removing a long barrel, scoped rifle.

Despite the exertion, her blood turned cold and her feet felt as if they were encased in concrete.

Justin leaned forward and drew a red ammunition box toward him. Beth was still fifty yards away from him when he opened the box and began sliding long, pointed bullets into the gun’s chamber, the morning sun glinting off the brass of each one.

“Justin!” Beth yelled, but the crisp January breeze blew her voice right back at her.

Another bullet went into the chamber.

“Justin!” she tried again.

He turned his head toward her, his face obscured by the brim of his dark-brown cowboy hat and the upturned collar of his shearling-lined jean jacket.

His body tensed. “What’s wrong?” he called back to her.

That’s what she wanted to know, but she continued running toward him.

She could see him look up toward the knoll where the ranch truck was parked, then back at her as she neared him. “What is it?” he asked, worry clear in his voice. “Is it Sammie?” He pointed toward the knoll. “The baby?” Everyone on the A Bar H had taken a vested interest in the welfare of Sammie and Alec’s baby. The kid was going to be drowned in love.

Beth slowed to a trot and glanced over her shoulder long enough to see that Sammie had climbed back out of the truck and was watching them with one hand braced on the truck’s door and the other on her undoubtedly aching low back.

When Beth reached where Justin stood at the open tailgate of his truck, she said, “It’s not that. Sammie and the baby are fine.” She paused to catch her breath while Justin expressed his worry by glowering at her. She ignored him and demanded, “Why are you loading a gun? Is something wrong with one of the bred heifers?”

His rigid posture relaxed and he went back to loading the last of the five rounds into the rifle. “They’re fine. At the moment. This isn’t for any of them,” he said, indicating the rifle.

Beth planted her hands on her hips. “Then for what?”

“Something’s been harassing them. When I came out at first light to see if any of them had calved, I found them bunched against the fence, breathing hard and lathered, as if something had been chasing them.”

“Like what?”

Justin gestured with a tilt of his head for her to follow him. He shouldered the rifle by its strap and led Beth around the back of the truck toward a patch of dirt still holding on to moisture from the last rainfall.

He dropped to one knee and pointed at a distinct animal track left in the mud.

Beth squatted next to him to better see the print. Though slightly smaller than her palm, the paw print had distinct pads and definite claws. “That looks canine. Coyote?”

Justin pulled in a breath, then shook his head. “Too big, I think. And the ground isn’t that soft, so whatever it was, is carrying some weight. Since there aren’t any wolves left in Texas, it’s probably a largish feral dog.”

Horror shot through Beth. “A dog? You’re going to shoot a dog?”

Justin settled his hazel eyes on her. “A feral dog, Beth. They can be just as dangerous as any predator. Especially around newborn calves.”

Beth’s brain understood Justin’s logic. Agreed with it, even. But her heart rebelled with a rending intensity. “A feral dog can be tamed. You don’t have to kill it, Justin.”

The normal warm-caramel color of his eyes turned to stone-hard amber. “You think I want to kill a dog? Or whatever might have left that print?”

Beth held his gaze. Despite having lived on the A Bar H for roughly seven months and seeing Justin nearly every day while he efficiently filled his role of ranch manager and she helped tend to and train the rodeo rough stock owned outright or leased by Grit and Grace, Beth didn’t really know Justin.

She said flatly, “I have no idea what you want, Justin.”

About the Author.

Having never met an unhappy ending she couldn’t mentally “fix,” Leah Vale believes writing romance novels is the perfect job for her. A Pacific Northwest native with a B.A. in Communications from the University of Washington, she lives in Central Oregon, with a huge golden retriever who thinks he’s a lap dog. While having the chance to share her “happy endings from scratch” is a dream come true, dinner generally has to come premade from the store.

Jack the Ripper and How He Inspired A Killer in Kensington

This March sees the release of A Killer in Kensington, the fourth book in my Lady in Blue Mysteries. The series was inspired by the brave suffragettes, who began volunteer patrols in London. Their aim was to support the regular police, when war broke out in 1914. Dorothy Peto, my main character, was a real person, who went on to become the first female superintendent at the Metropolitan Police.

A Killer in Kensington, opens with the discovery of a body in Kensington Gardens, one of the city’s Royal Parks. A young woman has been brutally killed, shocking Dorothy and even the older, more experienced detectives of Scotland Yard are left shaken. Inspector Derwent, the officer in charge of the investigation, fears this murder could mean Jack the Ripper has returned to the streets of London after an absence of almost thirty years.

Jack the Ripper, sometimes called Leather Apron or the Whitechapel Murderer, terrorized the streets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields, two impoverished area of the East End of London in 1888. He is known to have killed at least five women but it could have been many more. Despite Scotland Yard sending three detective inspectors to investigate, the killer was never arrested. However, due to the shocking nature of his crimes, people still continue to speculate about his identity. Over the years, there have been many suspects including Aaron Kosminski, a Polish barber, Walter Sickert, the artist and even Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria’s grandson.

As I have said in previous blog posts, writing The Lady in Blue Mysteries involved lots of
research and it was while researching the Royal Parks of London during the First World War, that I stumbled across the story of Alice Elizabeth Jarman.

Late one February evening in 1915, two soldiers discovered the body of a woman in a ditch
in Hyde Park. The young woman was Alice Elizabeth Jarman. Alice’s life had not been easy.
Newspapers at the time described her as being ‘a little weak minded and delicate’. Both her
parents were dead and she lived alone, having previously been admitted to St. Pancras
Workhouse on two occasions.

Alice had been stabbed several times and the police uncovered a bayonet hidden in a sewer near to where the body had been found. The bayonet was issued in 1888. Mary Ann Nichols, Jack the Ripper’s first victim, was killed in 1888 and, due to the nature of her injuries, there was a suggestion that the murder weapon could have been a bayonet.

A brutal killing in such a public place received a lot of attention from the press. Some
journalists tried to make the case even more scandalous by linking Alice’s murder to Jack the Ripper because of the bayonet and the way she was killed. However, the police didn’t seem to take this theory seriously.

The doctor who examined Alice’s body, stated that she had died only a short time before she was discovered. However, despite the park being full of soldiers at the time, indeed a sentry was only sixty feet away, nobody seemed to have heard or seen anything.

The story of Alice’s death was my inspiration for A Killer in Kensington, but sadly, like the
victims of Jack the Ripper, her killer was never brought to justice.

How to Lose a Cowboy in Ten Days

by Kaz Delaney

Liberty Fox knows better than to be taken in by a handsome face and a hot body, especially when the cowboy’s playboy reputation proceeds him. She’s on a mission to discover her real identity, and doesn’t want the distraction of a charming, cheeky cowboy who makes her laugh and yearn for a place to belong.

Successful livestock broker and rancher, Jack Halligan, knows there’s something missing in his life, but gorgeous Liberty Fox is definitely not it, no matter how perfect she feels in his arms. Still, offering his ranch house as a sanctuary when her life is threatened by an stalker, is understandable.

Appointing himself her bodyguard and spending time with the beautiful and compassionate Liberty is turning Jack’s world upside down, but maybe the collision of their two very different worlds is to blame. Neither Jack nor Liberty know whether they should run towards each other or run away.

It’s no surprise that Candice Y. Johnson’s favorite food is TACOS as she steps into her latest Tule release.

Have you ever seen an angry person eating a taco?

Neither have I.

…that’s why for my first series with Tule, I decided to include my favorite food – tacos, of course!

I’m Candice Y. Johnson, author of “Talk Taco to Me,” the second in my Taco Truck Romance Trilogy.  See, when I was nine, my family packed our bags, and moved from St. Louis to Texas. Being a shy kid who was an introvert, relocating was easy for me. I wasn’t the one responsible for finding our family a home to live in, or required the standard “cup of ambition” Dolly Parton sang about every morning before work, just to make it through the day and pay the house note. All I had to do was endure the hours-long van ride to our new state, along with my siblings and the best friends I took with me – my books. My first love. And our first meal when we crossed over into the Lone Star State?

You guessed it:

TACOS.

Fast forward to me at 51, still obsessed with my tacos, featuring them as a character in “Talk Taco to Me.” When we first met her in “Taco ‘Bout Love” (which I hope you’ve read and loved), Ari Bent was an arrogant, self-absorbed woman, oblivious that anything existed outside of her world. In the next installment, Ari is a single mother of twins, her hands full managing one of her sister’s taco trucks and motherhood, when she runs into her old flame, Talent Malone – back in Texas following a corporate stint in Louisiana. Because I’m personally a sucker for second chances, Talent wastes no time picking up where he and Ari left off, only this time a secret he’s harboring could tear their renewed relationship apart. If you believe true love deserves another chance…dive on in!

One thing I love, is a great taco. And since my hubby says I can’t have my own taco truck (just because I’ll admittedly eat all of the inventory!), I created the truck of my dreams, along with a cast of characters who are easy to love. Take the ride with Ari and Talent – they’re so easy to root for. And, be on the lookout for the final installment of the taco truck trilogy, “You Had Me at Taco,” on pre-sale now.

Hugs & shells,
Candice

About the Author.

When she’s not on the hunt for the perfect taco, award-winning author, choreographer, and screenwriter Candice Y. Johnson, loves spending time dancing across the keyboard, penning heartwarming, swoon-worthy, emotional stories that inspire compassion, provoke thought, and of course…always bet on love. Out of the many accolades she’s earned (including serving as choreographer for a four-time Emmy award-winning television special), one of the Texas resident’s proudest accomplishments? Writing about her favorite food – TACOS, of course!

Just as unpredictable as the Texas weather, Candice loves writing in multiple genres (romance, women’s fiction, inspirational, holiday, non-fiction, children’s books), and spending time with her creative husband – whom she’s convinced the world to call “Hershey,” as they collaborate on stage plays, films, and concerts…or munching on tacos, with a side of cupcakes.

Are You Ready to Return to Cowboy Point?

Ryder Carey… isn’t. Not really.

But his larger-than-life father isn’t getting any better, by all reports, as hard as it is for him to believe it. And Ryder isn’t getting any younger, which is a problem, since he’s been riding bulls and winning belts since he left town after high school. He figures it’s high time he comes back home to be a part of his family again, especially now.

But his family isn’t the only thing he has to deal with.

There’s also Rosie Stark.

Ryder knew Rosie back when they were kids, the way he knew everyone in Cowboy Point. He mostly knew the rest of her family, since the Starks have been in town almost as long as the Careys. And everyone knows the old lodge that sits up above their little town that the Starks used to run, then let fall into disrepair, and are now renovating.

Yet the Rosie he encountered three years ago after an American Extreme Bull Riders Tour weekend in Austin was not the little girl he vaguely remembered. Rosie was all grown up and way too pretty. And the night they shared was the kind of night that made a man’s head spin.

By the time morning came, Ryder decided that a spinning head was the kind of trouble he didn’t need. Or maybe it was that she tasted like forever, and he wasn’t ready for that. He wasn’t sure he’d ever be ready for that.

He wasn’t sorry about that—but the way he’d handled it had been less that ideal.

That he hadn’t acted the way he should have—the way a man ought to have, after a night like the one they’d shared— had stuck with him ever since. The same way the night itself had, but he tries not to dwell on that.

He settles in at home, parking his truck and trailer in the plot of land that had been carved out of the family ranch and given to him when he and his twin had turned 18. Wilder had gone ahead and built himself a whole house, but Ryder hadn’t done much more than take down a few trees and clean things up when he found himself in this part of Montana. Which wasn’t often.

But after he checks in with his father and stepmother, and all of his brothers—especially Wilder, who knows him too well—Ryder decides it’s time to go offer Rosie an overdue apology. He assumes she’ll laugh at him from the house she shares with her husband and family, having long since forgotten all about him. He figures she might not even remember him.

It was a long time ago, after all.

Still, he knows he has to do it. Not to make himself feel better, but because she deserves it. She deserved to be treated better at the time, and he’ll make sure she hears that from his mouth. Then he’ll leave her to whatever domestic bliss she’s created since, because she deserves that too.But when he turns up at Rosie’s house, he’s first struck by the fact that she still seems to have the same power over him that she did back then. That he hadn’t blown it all up out of proportion in his mind over the years.

That’s a sucker punch. But there’s a bigger one.

Two small boys who look like dead ringers for Ryder and Wilder when they were that age.

Two small boys who cannot possibly have any father in this earth…except him.

Happy release day to Megan for book three in her Carey’s of Cowboy Point series, The Cowboy’s Secret Babies!

Susan Sands talks about her latest release in her Moonshine series: suspense, romance, and Southern holiday charm

Hello, Tule friends!

I’m so excited to be here today with you to celebrate the release of A Georgia Christmas!

It’s the story of Merilee Bell and Randy Slade set in fictional Moonshine, Georgia and the second release in my Moonshine, Georgia series. First, let’s talk about this gorgeous cover! Lee Hyat really knocked it out of the park with this one, didn’t she? Blue is my favorite color, and that makes me love it even more!

In this winter-set novella, salon owner, Merilee, meets Randy when he parks his big ol’ pickup truck in her salon’s dedicated client parking space. Parking is at a premium in Moonshine, especially during the holidays, and taking a spot that is CLEARLY marked reserved doesn’t fly with feisty Merilee. She insists that if he’s going to park there, he should get a haircut or park elsewhere.

Randy agrees he’s overdue for a trim, and let’s Merilee have her way with—his hair. He tells her he’s in town for a job interview as the town’s newest deputy at the sheriff’s department across the street. Really, he’s an undercover Georgia Bureau of Investigations special agent who’s setting up a sting operation to catch a ring of property scammers. Since he’s undercover, he can’t tell her the truth.

Merilee just happens to have a garage apartment perfect for his undercover operation and rents it from Merilee, telling her a half-truth so he can move in and set things up. As Merilee and the town of Ministry charm him through the holiday season, he begins to imagine a life here. Can he do his job and still celebrate a small town southern Christmas, and maybe more with his dream girl?

This story is part suspense, part romance, and all Southern holiday charm. I hope you’ll give it a try.

Here are a couple of reviews for A Georgia Christmas so far:

“If you enjoy small-town contemporary romance with a strong sense of community, well-developed characters, a bit of suspense, complicated family dynamics, a realistic redemption arc and a happily ever after, I recommend A GEORGIA CHRISTMAS by Susan Sands. It’s a quick read with characters who were easy to root for and a charming town I’m eager to revisit.”—PJ Ausdenmore, The Romance Dish

“I absolutely loved A Georgia Christmas by Susan Sands! Her books never fail to hit that perfect mix of heartwarming, funny, and romantic. Merilee is such a relatable and lovable character. She’s strong, independent, and so proud of how far she’s come. The small town vibes in Moonshine, Georgia, are so cozy and magical, especially during Christmas. The festive setting made everything feel extra special.”—Goodreads reviewer

Look for What They Don’t Know, book three in the Moonshine series on April 8th. Here’s a sneak peek at the stunning cover:

Stay warm, everyone!!

All the best,
Susan Sands

Tule author Sinclair Jayne talks “A Little Christmas Magic” and starts off her new Southern Born series for Tule. (plus, a giveaway!)

There is a small, festive house near mine in Oregon that I drive by most days. The people who live there leave their Christmas decorations up until summer. I’m not just talking about a few lights. No. They are all in. Large ornaments dangle long, bright and colorful from an oak tree, lights are strung through several maples and large blowup Christmas art dominates their lawn—a teddy bear the size of a tractor, a smiling snowman and of course, Rudolph. Everyone knows this house, and though I have never met the couple who lives there, I think they must be perennially cheerful and rockin’ a huge electric bill.

I am thinking about the celebratory couple and their house today as I have my first Christmas novella being reissued this month as part of the kick-off to my Southern Love Spells series. A Taste of Christmas Magic first appeared in November as part of the A Southern Christmas anthology with the fabulous Susan Sands and Laurie Beach. We were excited to appear together in a multi-author collection, but each of us knew our anthology would split apart, and we’d take our story to be a part of (or in my case, launch) a new series. My new cover is so gorgeous I’m not even sorry to be heading out on my own now.

I’m excited about my upcoming series, Southern Love Spells for a lot of reasons. First, most of my books are set in the west—Montana, Texas, Oregon. The South just has a different vibe—the weather, history, architecture, manners, food and horticulture all create a tangible mood I can embrace and sink into. Second, most of my series feature brothers. Southern Love Spells features four sisters. Not a broody cowboy and sexily appealing tipped cowboy hat in sight. I always wanted a sister, and so this was an opportunity to indulge in a life long wish. The series explores sister dynamics, personal transformation, self-discovery and a dark family secret that winds through all four books.

I LOOSELY based my youngest heroine in this story, Chloe, on my daughter. She is a free spirit, a little fey, notes the unexpected and loves to sing. The rest is pure imagination. The touch of magic in each book—a mysterious heirloom recipe book continues to pop in and out of each sister’s life and while Chloe—like much in her life—embraces the discovery, I really enjoy plotting out how each sister responds to the book and what it reveals about each of them.

I have had a few weird discoveries or questionable events, which is one of the inspirations for this book of a loving, but slightly drifting family that finds their way back to each other even as they discover a secret about themselves and their past, and yes, of course they find love. I’ve just returned from Hawaii from a Tule author and team retreat—and yes, it was a lot of work (and fun), so I have a little bit of island swag, a $10 Starbucks card along with a print copy of A Touch of Christmas Magic (when they arrive) for two lucky responders who answer the question. You can DM me or email [email protected].

Have you ever discovered an unexpected family heirloom or picture or letter that created more questions than it answered? What was it and how did it impact you or your family?

I am thrilled to be writing The Infiltrix Series for Tule Publishing. It has been such an amazing adventure. The Package is already available. The Surveillance releases on February 19th and the third book, The Intel, is up for pre-order.

The covers are amazing, aren’t they? Thank you cover artist, Lee Hyat!

If you are new to my books, let me tell you my thrillers are full of mystery, twists, and against-all-odds deadly missions. People ask how I come up with my stories. I’ll give you my top-secret intel on my writing process.

Plot comes first.

For the Infiltrix Series, I wanted to write about a future where militant bad guys have taken over the United States. Everyone is terrorized. Freedoms are gone and no one can escape. It’s a scary country run by a violent dictator. A group of secret agents run spy missions to block the bad guys at every turn and to save lives. Setting the series in the future allows me to create my own spy gadgets (great fun!) and a slightly new country. The series is not too far into the future, however, because I want the reader to experience an edge of concern because the new world is a little too familiar.

Once I had the idea of what the series is going to be about, I started creating the characters. I like to develop characters who have the most to lose and then I throw them right into the middle of the danger. Does that sound mean? Maybe. What I learn about the character is that she/he will either sink or swim, run or fight. Their response tells me who the character is at that start of the book and who they might become by the end.

The hero for the Infiltrix Series is a female agent who lives in constant danger.

Heather is one of my most favorite characters. She is small, but mighty, smart, stubborn and a little reckless. As a highly-trained asset, she is fast on her feet, and can fight and disarm men who are double her size. She uses her wits, charms, and ability to throw her enemy off-guard. She is a gorgeous chameleon who lives deep undercover with the bad guys and changes her persona as quickly as her fashionable outfits. Her partner is a handsome foreign asset whose main duty is to have her back and keep her safe at all costs. Both characters suffer from war trauma and are trying to piece together the parts of the lives they lost. They are flawed and injured and are stronger when they work together, especially when techniques are used to erase their memories. A secret group of brilliant geeks, hackers, and a former SEAL round out the team Heather leads. The clock is always ticking and lives are at stake. It’s a wild ride.

I hope readers will love the characters as much as I do.

Here is a snippet from The Surveillance:

On high alert, Miguel got out of his car and cautiously walked to the front door. There was no movement in the bushes and no outside security lights clicked on. The digital lockbox was hanging open on the door handle. Someone had broken it to get inside the empty brewhouse. He took his pistol out of his waistband and aimed it at the door. After taking one slow breath, he kicked the door open.

He startled when he saw two large yellow eyes staring at him. He clicked on his flashlight and saw that it was only a large red-and-black dragon with fiery breath painted on the ceiling in the entrance. Its eyes did not blink. He exhaled. The building was dark inside except for the flicker of faux candlelight down the hall. He crept toward the light with his pistol raised and stepped into a room full of giant oak barrels. He smelled mustiness and old beer. And something else. Something that felt like…

The past.

He held steady as his eyes focused in the dim light. The woman he’d seen in the picture Worm had sent to him sat on a barstool with her back to the old barrels. The mechanical candle was on the floor beneath her feet bathing her lithe figure in a warm golden light. She wore beige slacks and a pale pink blouse. Her legs were crossed and the top foot bounced, as if she were nervous or impatient. A white strapless sandal was hooked on that bouncing foot. Her brown, wavy hair draped over her shoulders. It wasn’t a wig.

Her real hair in the picture looked like this: natural, thick, luxurious. A strange expression that resembled surprise or curiosity filled blue eyes that watched him. He hadn’t realized until that moment that he’d stopped moving, maybe even stopped breathing. There was no doubt. He was looking at Heather Slade.

“You came,” she said. Her voice was sultry, rich, and strangely familiar.

“Yes,” was the best he could do.

“Please, come in. I have secured the building with cameras and alarms. If anyone comes close to the doors or windows, we’ll know it and have time to react.”

He nodded. For some reason, his mouth wasn’t able to form words.

“I’m so glad you came. I worried that…” She didn’t finish the sentence but kept looking at him with that same odd expression on her face. Curiosity? Wonder?

He stepped closer. “You worried?”

She blinked. “Nothing. It’s…nothing.”

That foot was going a mile a minute, as if in time with his beating heart. He took a step toward her and stopped again.

He thought he was prepared for this moment. He’d stared at her 3D photo long enough to have memorized every angle, every curve of her face and long neck. He knew that her complexion was smooth and tight, as if wrinkles didn’t dare crease her skin. Except when she smiled. Ah, when she turned those lips up, tiny crinkles formed around her eyes like miniature blackbird wings. A man could soar through the clouds when she smiled. He knew all this. He’d prepared himself for how beautiful she was. He’d been ready for hours.

Still, he hadn’t thought about the opposite: how ugly he’d feel next to her perfection. Most days he didn’t think twice about the battle scars raked across his neck and scalp. Suddenly, he did.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, her voice soft and silky.

Déjà vu rang through him, not like a bell, more like a song of comfort, of coming home. He felt as if he knew this woman, which, of course, he did, in some fashion. But he also didn’t, because he couldn’t recall any of their mission together. The oddness of the situation was maddening.

“What is it?” she asked again.

“Sorry, Miss…Agent…Heather…Slade.” Mierda, he didn’t even know what to call her. “I’m
having a bit of difficulty—” He struggled with words as those deep-blue eyes pored over him. Her skin was just as flawless as in the photo, but there was something underneath the almost unreal perfection. If he had to put a name to it, he would say she shimmered.

“Difficulty?” she asked, still staring at him.

He ran his hand over his short hair, scraping over the latest wound. “This is going to be tough to explain, so I’m just going to say it. You should know the truth.”

She stood up. “You’re declining the mission?”

He frowned. “No.” At least, he didn’t think so. “I need to tell you something that, uh, might
change your mind about wanting me for the mission.”

A crease formed on her forehead. It didn’t seem to belong there, and he had the strangest desire to rub it off her skin. I am losing my mind.

“I don’t remember you. At all,” he rushed on. And because he was already neck-deep in the mud, the only thing left to do was dive under. “But I feel like we do know each other. Well. So well, that I am a fool for not remembering. I’m sorry.”

He winced, waiting for her response.

To his surprise, she smiled. “I know. Me too.”

“Pardon?”

“I don’t remember you either. Not really, anyway.”

They stared at each other for a long beat. How was it that they both couldn’t remember each other? Did she have a brain injury too? Or was this some elaborate joke?

“Are you making fun of me, Miss, uh, agent?”

“Of course not. It is as if we are seeing each other for the first time. That’s how it’s supposed to be, by design. But the more I study your features, hear your voice, it’s easier to stitch you to the guy I can’t see in my memories. The shadows.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.” She sighed. “No one does. But we did work together before, and we will again. It’s
part of the dangerous game we play to save the world.”

Elsa Winckler talks Childhood Wounds, Cowboy Heroes, and Second Chances in A Family with the Cowboy – Out Today!

I sometimes use the EnneaApp when creating characters. It’s similar to other personality tests but they have what they call nine ennea-types. Interesting to me is “childhood wound” of each ennea-type that is discussed.

Whatever type we are, I think we all walk around with some kind of “wound” from our childhood or past and often this prevents us from becoming the person we’re supposed to be. Sometimes what we think is a “wound” is simply our wrong perception of a situation, but we allow the lie we believe to take over our thoughts and direct our decisions.

This idea of a “wound” is what I’ve used when planning the The Westons of Montana series. The four Weston siblings live and work on The Weston Ranch. They lost a brother a few years back and they all feel guilty because of reasons they believe to be true. In this series each one has to come to terms with what happened before they can open their hearts to love.

Hayden Weston, the hero in the first story in the series, A family with the cowboy, has also lost his wife and as a single dad he’s struggling to cope with being a dad and a mom to his son Luke who is eight years old. When he meets Luke’s new teacher forgotten feelings stir and remind him he still has needs. Will he be brave enough to make peace with his past and accept that he’s allowed to be happy again?

Laura Anderson, new teacher in Marietta and happily single, may just be the person to show him how to love again.

About the Author

Elsa has been reading love stories for as long as she can remember and when she ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James, the Brontë sisters, etc. during her Honors studies, she was hooked for life.

Although her three gown-up children rarely acknowledge the fact they have a romance-writing mom, her husband fortunately, is very proud of her, reads every word and is happy to make sure she gets the kissing scenes just right.

She likes the heroines in her stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong.  And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity. They are of course, also gorgeous.  Her stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.
