Barbara Ankrum talks about returning to Marietta and how her characters intersect during the holidays.

Hi Guys! I’m so happy to be back here today, talking about my latest book, The Cowboy’s Miracle Baby,” Book 3 in my Hardestys of Montana Series. It’s out today, so I hope you’ll check it out.

This series follows the four Hardesty siblings in Marietta Montana, our favorite little Tule make-believe town. Oh, oops! Did I say make-believe? Because it feels pretty real to those of us who share it.

Marietta’s been around since the beginning of Tule and personally, I’ve set two entire series there and partially set another couple of series. It’s a pretty unique thing that Tule has done, allowing their many authors to create their own series there and develop the town. As those of you who read Marietta books know, there’s sometimes (often) interaction between the characters of other series and also of our own other series.

I’ve been with Tule now since nearly the beginning, starting in 2014, and I’ve written four series here. (Have you read them all?) In this latest series, I had so much fun bringing in old characters from other series who still live in town, just to give them a call back, in case anyone was wondering what became of them! The Canadays appear in this Christmas book, and also Trey Reyes, a PI who has made appearances in nearly all of my Marietta books in one way or the other. Some of my old characters are even hey-let’s-go-to-dinner friends with the new ones. Yeah…I’m waiting for my invitation.

Also, because I love Christmas stories, I’ve written quite a few of those set here, too. Because Marietta is made for Christmas. But this one was kind of different for me. Oh, it has all the fun Christmas things—the ice skating, the sweet shopping in town, Christmas tree hunting and trimming. But this story came to me a little differently. It was just an idea of a baby being found in a church during a Christmas pageant rehearsal and…what if that happened? What would the finder do? The finder, in this case, turned out to be Cami Hardesty along with the father of one of the pageant players, Gus Claymore, a temporary large animal vet in town for a short stint.

Cami, an overextended schoolteacher who always takes on more than she should, takes on this baby and decides to try to find the birth mother and maybe fix whatever has happened. As unrealistic as that seems to her family, Cami is determined, and Gus becomes her ally in the search. He’s a widower with a little girl whose only wish for Christmas is a secret. But what we know is that she’s worried that her dad is lonely. In fact, he’s been running from that very loneliness for a few years now.  And this baby brings all those things into focus. ( I also wanted to bring awareness to the plight of foster kids who age out of the system and how unfair it is that they start life with nothing. But you’ll see how that fits in when you read the book.) But meanwhile, the real story is how Cami and Gus fall in love. These two were meant for each other. It just takes them a bit to figure it out!

The Cowboy’s Miracle Baby” was a fun, emotional and very Christmassy book for me and I loved writing it. I’ve fallen in love with all of these Hardesty siblings, and I really hope you do, too. All four of these books will be available by early February and the last one is up for presale right now. If you read it, please leave me a review on Amazon or some other e-retailer of your choice. It helps us authors so much to get your feedback.

GIVEAWAY: To win an e-copy of The Cowboy’s Miracle Baby (Or another of my Tule e-books) just leave a comment telling me if you’ve read any of my other series and if so, which series or book was your favorite.

Eve Gaddy talks about the writer relationship with imaginary characters and how she listens to what they tell her.

As most of you know, writers are weird.:) I don’t mean that in a bad way. After all, I’m a writer. But even I must admit that not only talking to imaginary people but also having imaginary people talk to me is a bit…well, weird. Unless you’re a writer.

What does this have to do with The Christmas Cowboy, my November 7 release, you ask? Liam McFarland, the hero of this book, almost took over his brother Logan’s book. I had to slap him down several times, promising him that yes, he would get his own book with his own heroine but no, Logan’s book (The Wrong Brother) wasn’t his! You couldn’t really blame the guy since Logan’s heroine originally came to Marietta to get to know Liam. And Liam does play an important part in Logan’s book.

Liam listened to me and backed off. Begrudgingly, I might add. But Logan told him in no uncertain terms that his brother needed to butt out of The Wrong Brother. Which he didn’t exactly do but he tried. Anyway, after writing Logan’s book I got to finally write Liam’s.

I’m always asking my husband and daughter, both in the medical profession, questions. Val Fletcher, the heroine of this book, is pregnant throughout. (Don’t worry. It’s not a spoiler. You find this out really quickly at the beginning.) My daughter was a OB/GYN Physician’s Assistant. I asked her all sorts of questions. I like to be as accurate as I can be. Sometimes she’ll ask me a question and I’ll say, “I don’t know. She (or he) hasn’t told me yet. It took her a while to understand my characters do talk to me. I can’t explain it. They just do. It’s when they stop talking that I have a problem.

I love this guy. Liam is sweet, he’s protective, he’ll do anything for the people he loves. He loves his family. He loves his horses and his dogs and pretty soon he falls in love with his heroine, Val, although he doesn’t think she’s in love with him. He doesn’t know, although she told me several times, that Val is in love with him and has been forever.

Their journey from a marriage of convenience to a full-fledged love was a joy to write. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Anne McAllister shares that her latest release wasn’t originally intended to be its own book!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for joining me here today on the Tule blog. It’s always a treat to connect with readers because when I’m writing I’m usually not connecting with anyone but a couple of difficult hard-nosed people (can you say ‘hero’ and ‘heroine?’) and my dog. The dog is, literally, a golden retriever, and as far as golden retriever heroes go, he’s the best. Somedays he’s the one who keeps me sane!

He had a job doing that while I was writing A Cowboy’s Pursuit because – confession time – it was not supposed to be a book at all!

It was supposed to be a sub-plot when I was writing The Great Montana Cowboy Auction. But when the Auction book got to be 96,000 words and Jace and Celie were nowhere near ready to get their act together and provide a nice counterpoint to Sloan and Polly, the actual hero and heroine of that book, I had two choices: I could write their enemies-to-well… enemies romance out of the book and they could go on being each other’s worst nightmare for life, or I could give them a book of their own.

Foolishly, I decided they could have their own book.  I thought they’d be grateful. I thought ex-rodeo cowboy Jace would be happy to get a chance to woo the girl he’d had an eye on for a decade and convince her that he wasn’t the role model when her ex-fiancé strayed.  And I thought Celie, who’d dreamed of settling down, having a husband and family, would be delighted to discover that the boy she’d had a crush on back in her schooldays wasn’t the unrepentant bad guy after all.

But, no. That wasn’t how they rolled.

I gave them their book, and the first thing Celie did was pack up and leave town! Elmer, Montana wasn’t big enough for both of them, she said.  Hard to get people together if they’re thousands of miles away from each other, I told her. As if she wanted to get together with Jace Tucker, Celie retorted. As if!

And Jace wasn’t any better. He thought she’d come to her senses.  He figured he could wait her out.  Ice ages have come and gone in less time than Celie O’Meara would take to melt in front of his eyes.

It took them months to realize that someone had to do something.  Someone had to take a risk if we were going to have a book.  Honestly, I felt as if Tule and my editor and I were the ones taking the risk on these two stubborn people.  The only person who seemed to believe in them was ninety-year-old Artie Gilliam, who owned the town hardware store and meddled in their lives because, as he told me – and them — “Somebody’s got to.”

Well, thank heavens for Artie.

At last Jace did something. He pursued her. Hence, the title of the book.  But, of course, it wasn’t as simple as that.

There were those years and years of mistrust that still stood between them.  There was – on both their parts – the fear of being vulnerable, of letting someone in.  It’s a scary process, even if you ride broncs for a living.  Maybe especially if you ride broncs for a living, because that’s pitting your physical prowess and grit and muscle memory against a horse that wants nothing more than to shake you off his back in the next eight seconds. Battling a bronc and succeeding is do-able. Not every time, but often enough.

But putting your heart on the line, not for eight seconds, but for forever – well, that’s something else.

Being vulnerable takes a kind of  courage Jace has never had to summon before.  It takes an honesty way harder than sticking to a bronc.

Meeting that vulnerability with her own isn’t a piece of  cake for Celie, either. She had grown up believing in true love and happily-ever-after — until ten years ago when the morning of her wedding arrived – and her groom didn’t. Since then, not so much.  Not at all, actually.

Being vulnerable to Jace was the hardest thing she’d ever do. She always expected the worst from him.  So did I, at that point.  He wasn’t giving either of us much of a reason to trust him. Even Artie was beginning to despair.

But after pursuing her, Jace did something unexpected. He said something that surprised Celie.  Shocked me. Only my editor seemed to take it in stride.  “See?” she said, ever the optimist. “I knew he could do it.”

But then the question was, would Celie hold up her end?  Would she take a risk as well?

Amazingly, she did. No, not amazingly. Of course she did, I realized, because with Celie and Jace it instantly became a matter of ‘anything you can do, I can do better.’  Even when it came to being vulnerable.

Not what I expected, but at least we had a story.

It wasn’t always clear sailing. With these two it never was. But they got their act together at last.  They dared to shed their armor, to speak their minds (with a bit of backsliding because, Jace and Celie).

And finally, because they took some risks, learned some lessons, dared to trust, they’re getting their happy ending – unless they’ve rewritten the end when I wasn’t looking.

I hope you’ll join them in their story.  I hope you’ll be as happy – almost – as they are at the end.

And me?  I’m going to go walk the dog, then take a nap.

As I’m a great admirer of people who do difficult things like Jace and Celie did, leave a comment telling me what one of the toughest things you’ve ever done is. Or tell me the title of one of the best books you’ve read recently and why (because I can’t get enough of good books). Three days from now, one commenter, chosen at random, will win an e-book copy of The Great Montana Cowboy Auction or if you’re the winner and have already got a copy, you can pick an alternate title from my Tule backlist.  Happy reading!

A Love Story with a Mysterious Twist! A quick check in from Barbara Ankrum on her latest release “Cowboy Don’t Go”. (PLUS a GIVEAWAY!)

Hi Friends!

I’m so excited to be back here on the Tule blog to let you know about my new book, “Cowboy Don’t Go.” It’s the second book in my new Hardestys of Montana series that follows the Hardesty family, ranchers in Marietta, Montana. This one follows single mom, Shay Hardesty and her long ago crush, Cooper Lane, a cowboy who trains horses and has a family history that makes life hard. Now, he’s working on the Hardesty ranch and imagining new beginnings. It’s a second chance love story with a mysterious twist thrown in for good measure.

What was my inspiration for this series? It was a trip my daughter and her family took to Montana and a lux dude ranch resort, complete with gorgeous cabins, glamping tents, trail rides and campfires. (Was I jealous? Uh, yes.) How incredible to combine the beauty of Montana, a ranch with cattle and all the outdoor activities you could want. With ranches struggling everywhere to survive, many in the wilds of the west are searching for ways to make their land work harder for them and are giving this sort of thing a shot. And I thought, why not the Hardestys, who have found ranching a challenge since the patriarch of the family passed away?

Whether we’re ready or not, transitions like this appear in our lives and challenge us. What I really wanted to explore was how a family who had splintered a bit could reunite for a mutual goal and build something new.

In “Cowboy Don’t Go,” Shay Hardesty has certainly faced those transitions as a single mom who has stayed determinedly single while raising her now teenaged son. As the family begins building the resort, the appearance of Cooper Lane breaks all of her rules about risking her heart and at the same time, draws a new kind of trouble to the ranch. With his father recently released from prison for cattle rustling, Cooper’s only goal for the last ten years has been to prove his father’s innocence. But getting a second chance with Shay while fending off the mysterious intruder on the ranch becomes his new priority. But will the fragile trust they’ve built be enough to survive a devastating revelation?

I love putting a little mystery in my stories, whether it’s real trouble coming at my characters or unlocking the mysteries of their own hearts. I sure hope you enjoy this one. If you get the chance to read it, please let me know what you think. And if you would, please drop a review for me on the outlet of your choice. It really helps us authors so much!

Here’s a little GIVEAWAY for you to celebrate the release! To WIN an e-copy of “Cowboy Don’t Go,” or any other of my Tule books, just tell me– if you had the chance to go to a dude ranch, what would be your favorite activity?  I’ll announce the winner on Saturday, 9/20. Please check back to see if you’ve won!

Return to Cowboy Point and see which Carey is playing with fire in “The Cowboy’s Forbidden Bride” by Megan Crane

Welcome Back to Cowboy Point!

When we last visited this tiny Montanan mountain community ten miles up from Marietta and around the back side of Copper Mountain, it was late spring going into summer.

And everyone knows that there are really only three seasons in Montana: Winter, July, and August.

The community really comes alive in the summertime, and because there’s so little of it, they like to make sure they get out into all the sunlight on offer. There are food trucks and craft stands, the weekly market that showcases farmed goods and artisan creations from all over the far-reaches of the hills above Paradise Valley. Summer is when the few restaurants in town stay open late and keep the patios packed with live music and extended hours to match the northern skies that stay bright long into the evenings.

One warm summer night, Wilder Carey runs into the much-younger Cat Lisle in the roughest bar down in Marietta and figures he’ll save her from herself and the bad decisions she seems determined to make.

This is not his usual MO.

Wilder’s more of a live and let live kind of a guy. He, for example, enjoys carousing at will, tied to nothing, as the older of the Carey twins and the only one who stayed in town. He doesn’t like commitments of any kind—he’s got all he needs in that arena with his family, and has always found that mornings-after give the wrong impression.

He’s not a man who gets involved.

There’s absolutely no reason, then, that he should involve himself with a woman who looks like she just wants to find a bit of trouble on a weekend night, like anyone else. Like him. In fact, he’s more likely to volunteer to be that trouble himself than to act like he’s suddenly come down with a case of chivalry and escort her out.

Not to mention, she’s a Lisle.

The Careys and the Lisles haven’t gotten along since they first crossed path up on Copper Mountain when folks who made the trek out this way still had mining aspirations. Legend has it that there was a high-stakes poker game and canny Ebenezer Lisle won the General Store—the only building around in those days—from crusty old Matthew Carey with a well-timed royal flush.

The Lisles claim it was down to good, old-fashioned luck.

The Careys know that the Lisles aren’t lucky—they like to cheat.

They’ve all been mad about it ever since.

When Wilder was in high school, he and his twin brother Ryder expressed their historic, inherited feelings about the old feud on the football field where Cat’s older brothers also played—and jockeyed for position. These days they all simply ignore each other when possible or, when forced, offer each other the sort of chilly greetings that make it clear they loathe each other in a very small town way.

The point is this: what Wilder should do is leave Cat Lisle alone.

But he doesn’t.

And that’s how the summer heats up in Cowboy Point, until ending an Old West feud is the least of Wilder’s problems.

Because Cat intends to love him forever, and what’s he supposed to do with that?

Especially when her grumpy, over-protective brothers—who already hate Wilder and always have—find out…

Kaz Delaney shares about her excitement to write for Tule’s ‘Montana Born’ imprint with new cowboy series.

Hello gorgeous Book Lovers!

I’ve popped in to talk about my new Tule series—The Halligans of Montana – the first book of which releases today—yay! So, I’d been mulling over how I was going to introduce this family to you, and then I thought about the questions others had asked me when I was at our recent RWA (Australia) Conference at beautiful Glenelg Beach in South Australia—and there was my answer.

To begin though, I must mention that those friends who hang out on TBC might better know me for my cozy mystery series, The Hart of Texas Murder Mysteries, featuring Rosie Hart, and I thank all those of you who’ve jumped on board with me. However, this time I’m offering something different and that’s where this first question came from.

How different was it writing a romance series after the mysteries?

I grew up reading both romance and mystery. My brother introduced me to Agatha Christie when I was about fourteen and I was hooked, but prior to that, right from primary (grade) school, I’d been reading my grandmother’s little romance comics and adored them—much to my mother’s dismay—but that dismay wasn’t nearly strong enough to steer me away. My grandmother graduated to Mills and Boon and so on, and so did I. So, from childhood those two genres, romance and mystery have always been my true reading loves.

Writing wise, apart from my works for children, I’ve mostly incorporated the two in the stories I’ve written, and though it was a while since I’d written straight romance, I didn’t find it different so much as just shifting gears and getting comfortable again.

So, this series is just romance?

In all my stories there’s a little bit of real life that intrudes to make life maybe a little bit more difficult than the characters would like – which is always fun to write—insert evil laughter. But it’s through those challenges in life that we work out what’s important, right? However, the focus in this series is on the romance, and with three strapping Halligan men and their gorgeous feisty little sister, each finding that life partner they’d dreamed of, there was plenty to work with.

So, four Halligan siblings?

Yes, the Halligan family ranch, The Lazy H, is situated on the rural outskirts of everybody’s favorite Montana town, Marietta. Over the generations they’ve accumulated land enough to make them now one of the land biggest holdings in the area.

JD Halligan, the eldest currently runs most of the family ranch, but brothers Jack and Leo, along with sister Joanna each have their own parcel of land in that holding. The series will follow each of them as they navigate their own paths to true love and happiness. There’ll be surprises they have to face along the way, and be warned there will be sometimes tears but also laughter as we journey with them.

Whose story is first?

Oh, that would be the luscious JD Halligan. I fell hard for JD. He’s a serious, hard-working, sexy as all get-out rancher who has taken the helm of the family business since his father fell ill. Well, that’s what I thought. And, I must hasten to add that most of that is true. What I didn’t know was that he was warm and funny. Quite a cheeky tease. Now, I gotta say, my favorite kind of man is one who will make me laugh, who is playful, and that was one of the reasons I fell hard for him.

I also didn’t realize he’d been burned by someone who was so not right for him, and boy, was I glad he’d dodged that bullet. However, when Evie Davis came along and knocked his heavy-duty work socks off, he initially put her in the same category as his ex, and tried very hard to convince himself that he needed to beware. Trouble was, she’d arrived with the cutest baby girl, one she claims is his daughter—and that he knows is definitely not—but Evie can’t leave until the paternity thing is sorted.  But there’s always a complication, right? Baby Mia has a particular marking that he recognizes and knows in his heart that while she’s not his daughter, she does belong to the Halligan family—his family—and there’s no way he’s letting this child go into care.

The title?

It’s entitled The Cowboy’s Baby Surprise and check out that gorgeous baby on the cover!  Forgive me while I gush a little and share the blurb:

What if he really is ‘The One’?

When up-and-coming lawyer Evie Davis travels halfway across the country to deliver her old friend’s baby girl to the oblivious father, the last thing she expects is an encounter with a rugged Montana cowboy. One who convincingly insists he’s not the father.  The second last thing she expects is to have her heart flutter in gratitude at that proclamation. A loner by nature and nurture, Evie isn’t looking for a relationship or even a fling, but as she waits for word on the potential father’s whereabouts, she’s tempted.

As oldest of the Halligan brood, JD Halligan has his hands full running the sprawling family ranch. So, when a beautiful Californian lawyer turns up on his doorstep with a baby she claims is his, it flips his world. He’s definitely not this baby’s father, but can’t ignore the cuteness overload, especially baby Mia’s carer, Evie Davis. Trouble is, he fell for a career-minded city girl once before and that ended in disaster, so he’s not prepared to go there again. But as he opens his home to the new arrivals, sweet baby Mia isn’t the only one winning her way into his heart.

This was such a glorious book to write. And yes, there were some difficult scenes, and a bit of agonising over whether to ‘go there’ – you’ll know what I mean when you read it. Was that rude? I hope not, but none of us like spoilers, right?

What did I like most about writing this book?

Gosh, almost everything. For example, and this was more of a surprise than anything else—right from the beginning JD and Evie developed their own way of communicating; they fell into a particular banter pattern. That happened organically and that’s one of the most thrilling parts of writing any story; when the story surprises the author. So, when Evie politely, but firmly chides JD for something and begins with the words ‘most people’ I had no idea at that moment that JD would hit back with his own witty response that began with words that echoed her own—most people. As that continued it almost became a competition between them, neither wanting to be the one who wanted to stop.  As their attraction grew, and it became more teasing, it became their love language—something just between them, and maybe some of my more fun scenes to write as the story progressed

And of course, Evie and JD. I loved their journey as they gradually discovered so much more about each other, loved the growing relationship between them with tiny baby Mia there between them, innocently playing cupid. They were so sweet with her, even though neither had any experience with caring for a child. And watching him fall hard for the two women suddenly in his life was so heartwarming. (Even if I was slightly jealous. Please, don’t worry about me, though. I recovered… Kind of… Writing the next book helped, but then what happened? There was another luscious hero to bother me!!! Sigh…

Thank you for reading along with me. Bye!

Hugs,
Kaz

Eve Gaddy shares that her story inspiration for “The Wrong Brother” came from her daughter.

I was thinking about what sparked the idea for my new book, The Wrong Brother. My daughter has been married for quite a while but I’ll never forget when she met her future husband.

She was living at home in between teaching jobs. One of her college friends set her up on a blind date with an old friend of hers. He asked one of his friends to go and my daughter asked one of hers so it was a double (blind) date.

When my daughter got home I asked her how it went. She started talking about the guy she didn’t have a date with. Not just mentioning him but it was clear she was really interested in this guy. So I said, “Wait. Didn’t you have a date with the other guy?”

“Oh, yes. He was nice.” And she continued talking about the other one. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when the other one called her for a date. That evening he’d called my daughter’s date and asked if he minded if he asked my daughter out. He said no, that was fine. As they say, that was the start of a beautiful relationship.:)

And her original blind date? He told the story at their wedding.

So I asked myself what would happen if my heroine went to Marietta to meet a man she met online? And what if instead of falling for the one she went to meet, she falls for his brother?

Logan and Cici’s story doesn’t go nearly as smoothly as my daughter’s did. Even though Liam, Logan’s brother and the man she met online, agreed they were better as friends, that sure didn’t solve all the problems. (Liam has his own story in The Christmas Cowboy – releasing November 7th of this year.) You’ll have to read it to see what happens!

“This is where it all falls apart” – Author Roxanne Snopek talks about the challenges Lucas must face in “The Maverick’s Surprise Family” – Out Now!

Have you ever had stuff happen where you think, “This is it. This is where it all falls apart.” Maybe it’s simple stuff like… the third light bulb in a row burns out and you remember that the new bulbs are in the storage closet without a window… which is also where the flashlight is… and which also has a burned out bulb.

Or maybe it’s more complicated stuff like painful relationships, illness, career setbacks. We all face things throughout our lives that lead to moments of panic and discouragement. That’s life, right? But if we’ve developed some resilience, we know that everything is temporary. “A body can get used to anything,” as the saying goes. “Even hanging.”

Dark but true.

In The Maverick’s Surprise Family, Lucas Landry has already faced a lot of obstacles in his life. Born with mild cerebral palsy, he’s had to work hard at a lot of basic things the rest of us take for granted. But he had good parents who did everything right and helped him reach his potential.

Then, someone gets hurt, badly, on one of his outdoor adventure tours. He gets blamed—unfairly—but when someone’s looking to place blame, anyone will do. The business and the reputation he’s spent all this time and effort and passion developing is headed for ruin.

Then he finds out that he has biological siblings out in the world he never knew he had. Adopted as an infant, it never occurred to him to look. (Also, he’s a guy and guys, well… sometimes they’re not super dialed-in to the relational stuff.) But his mom pushes him to meet them. If nothing else, it’ll keep him from obsessing about his upcoming lawsuit, right?

And that’s when he meets Bayleigh Sutherland… who knows and loves the siblings in question. She doesn’t care about his CP, she’s protective of her friends and has no time for his self-pity and yeah, in a shocking twist… she’s into him. As in, instant chemistry. Sorry, Mom, Lucas thinks, but she’s a much better distraction.

So, they have a brief fling, clear parameters, no strings. Easy-peasy. Everything will work out right?

Nope. His lawsuit ramps up. His siblings are a handful. And then he discovers that Bayleigh—who has a grown son already, who has been infertile for years—is pregnant. And she didn’t tell him. Because she’s never letting a man be in charge of her again.

“This is it,” Lucas thinks. “This is where it all falls apart.”

But you know what? You can’t bounce back until you hit bottom.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m in the midst of All the Stuff, I don’t generally remember to feel optimistic about bouncing back. I’m more the whining “I’LL DIE IN THE DARK AND THEN YOU’LL BE SORRY” kind of person in that stage.

Fortunately, the universe looks after us, even when we can’t see it.

Lucas and Bayleigh both have to change and grow before they find their happy ending, but they do. And isn’t that why we read? To see someone else go through all the rough stuff, to watch them struggle and fail and keep going anyway and eventually find their way through and triumph. We can cheer for them and then maybe we can tuck a bit of that triumph away for ourselves.

Infinite ways to live, infinite kinds of problems, and infinite ways of overcoming… that’s what stories give us, a reminder that we can triumph in the end.

And we don’t even have to leave our couches.
