ingle mom Rebecca Dorchester swore she’d never chase another bad decision—until she packs up her daughter and her sentimental father for a risky reunion with the biological mother and half-sisters she never knew in Marietta, Montana. She definitely doesn’t need the complication of a rugged, heart-stopping cowboy who catches her little girl mid-tumble on day one. But one smoldering look from Harrison Drake, and Rebecca’s carefully guarded heart starts to thaw.

Harrison Drake’s ranch is his entire legacy—land, cattle, and the family name he’s always expected to pass down. Lately, though, the empty spaces in his life have been louder than the Montana wind. When he meets Rebecca and her daughter, he knows exactly what he’s been missing: a woman to love, a family to build.

With old wounds, family drama, and hard-won trust on the line, can Rebecca risk her heart again—and can Harrison prove that this time, love isn’t just another complication?

It was supposed to be a favor. It was never supposed to feel real.

When the Colorado ranch Finn Patrick expected to inherit is sold, he follows his sister to Cowboy Point to meet the half-siblings they never knew existed. Time to figure out what comes next.

Kitty Bennett isn’t part of the plan. Sharp-tongued, wary-eyed, and fiercely protective of her family’s beloved Mountain Mama pizza shop, Kitty has no time for distractions. Especially volcanically hot ones.

But when her otherwise wonderful landlord makes it clear Kitty needs a husband if she wants to buy the restaurant at last, Finn is the obvious choice—because nothing about his stay in Montana is permanent. They can fake the whole thing. She’s confident she and Finn are on the same page, and the plan will go smoothly.

The only problem?

Finn has wanted Kitty in every possible way. He’s wanted her since he first laid eyes on her. And he knows exactly what he tastes when he kisses her—forever. Now he needs to convince her that there’s nothing fake about them, after all.

An alpha with a storied legacy. An independent woman rebuilding after grief. Forbidden desire—for only one is human….

After her mother’s death, photographer Erica Barrett, buys a home she and her mother obsessed over during her childhood in the quaintly historical town of Tolstone. Her magnetic next door neighbor intrigues and disturbs her. The sensual pull feels otherworldly.

Wolf shifter Dominic Beaumont never wanted to be the prime alpha of the sanctuary city, Tolstone, but when his father dies, he’s forced to step up as pack leader and prime alpha over all the wolf packs sheltering in his town. Erica’s arrival is dangerous. The attraction is fierce and instant, but duty comes first.

When revelations about Erica’s past and parentage create chaos, and she questions everything she thought she knew about herself, Dominic is her strength. But as tension builds in the pack, and his leadership is challenged, love becomes a risk that could cost him his authority, his people, and everything he’s sworn to protect.

An undercover Texas Ranger, An IT specialist under pressure. An impossible choice.

Former soldier and by-the-book Texas Ranger Colton Adams is ready to come clean. After months undercover at Restoration Ranch, he’s finally earned a shot at redemption—and the chance to tell sexy, guarded IT specialist Seneca Daniels the truth about who he really is. But before he can beg forgiveness for the lies he told to protect her, danger bursts back into their world. His mission isn’t over—and now the target is Seneca.

Ex-con Seneca Daniels came to Restoration Ranch to rebuild her life, not fall for a man with secrets. Betrayed before, she swore never to risk her heart—or her freedom—again. But when her past returns in the form of the man who once tormented her, she’s trapped between two threats: the one who broke her and the one who lied to save her.

As risks escalate and passions flare, Colton puts it all on the line to keep her safe. But Seneca’s no one’s damsel—especially when she just might be the deadliest threat of all.

Vanessa Nava returns to her Texas hometown as a newly divorced single mom, determined to give her imaginative four-year-old daughter a magical summer. But the serene lakeside cabin she rented? Double-booked. The current occupant is the hottest, grumpiest handyman she’s ever met—claiming it’s under construction and strictly off-limits.

Paul McPherson, a Houston native recovering from a gunshot wound, has retreated to Lost Lake to hide and heal in peace. He won’t share his safe haven with anyone—especially not the sheriff’s daughter and her bubbly little girl. Vanessa is stunning, stubborn, and way too tempting for a man with secrets.

Vanessa paid upfront and refuses to leave. She sets up camp on his doorstep, transforming mishap into lake days filled with laughter, lemonade stands, and hot summer nights—sending Paul’s buried protective instincts into overdrive.

Going home shouldn’t be this hard…

Cassidy Lambert has worked hard to build a professional career in Great Falls, far from her domineering mother and the expectations of Coffee Creek Ranch. She swore she’d never come back for good. But when a dangerous equine disease threatens the family horses—and the ranch’s future—Cassidy has no choice but to return home.

Working side by side with rugged veterinarian Dan Farley is the last complication she needs. Their first date years ago ended in disaster, and Dan hasn’t forgotten it. Now forced into close quarters as they fight to save the ranch, old wounds resurface—and so does undeniable chemistry.

Dan once vowed to guard his heart against Cassidy’s sharp edges and city ambitions. Yet beneath her independence, he sees the compassionate woman who loves this land as fiercely as he does.

As the crisis deepens and small-town ties pull tight, Cassidy must choose: the life she built in the city… or the cowboy vet who feels like home.

I always love it when authors discuss their craft or their habits or the moment an idea burst from their brain like Athena in full battle regalia. Sometimes I get an idea from an overheard snippet of conversation or a story a friend shares. Scrolling online, reading a news article, or even a song lyric has inspired me. Chatting with authors is often a book premise idea swap, and what I find fascinating is that twelve authors could take the same premise and create a dozen wildly different stories.

My next release—The Bull Rider’s Baby Surprise already had some elements baked in. Setting: Marietta, Montana. Family: The Telfords of Montana (previously established), Hook: Cowboy as I was adding two new books to create a series with two previously written ‘orphaned’ books (Cowboy Come Home and Rogue Cowboy’s Secret Bride that were both part of different multi-author Copper Mountain Rodeo series).

So there were rules.

I’m always fired up to write western stories, especially cowboys. It just gets my swagger
on in a way I never manifest in my real life. With Cash Hunter (born Benz Telford
Stevens) I knew and he knew he had family in Marietta, but he’d never met them and
didn’t intend to. So of course, kicking off the book that was where he was going.

But why?

And that’s when I pictured the opening scene of the book. Cash has won again. He’s on
top heading into the finals, and it was the last ‘show’ (how he thinks of it) before a
month-long break. He’s sauntering out into the arena in his flamboyant chaps with
fringe, flashy shirt, open, no vest or helmet, just the iconic Restoril—black of course—to
take his place in the winner’s circle. He’s going through the motions, being charming,
mentally counting his winnings and thinking about the break he’s taking alone in the
mountains. The American Extreme Bull Rider tour staff flanks him as do the sponsors,
local dignitaries and of course, the media.

He’s hot. In command. And internally smug even as he faux humbles his way through
the interview and thank you speech. And that’s when everything in his life skids
sideways. A distraught, furious woman comes tearing across the arena cursing him out
before shoving a baby in his arms and disappearing into the crowd.

What does he do next?

I love creating awkward situations for my heroes who think they are all that. I love to
watch them squirm and fumble and attempt to seize back their life narrative, and it’ sweeter to watch their good guy persona reassert the vibe in the midst of chaos. And it’s
even better when I can provide a twist to one of my favorite tropes.

I hope you get a chance to read The Bull Rider’s Baby Surprise, book three in the Telford’s of Montana series. I have included a short excerpt below! If you want to learn more, you can sign up for my newsletter.

The Zoom was hella awkward. Cash felt like he was crawling out of his skin. He needed to get up and pace, make his case, defend himself, but he’d been shushed by Jessie. AEBR marketing exec Suzette glared at him and slashed a line near her mouth as if he were a kid who should zip it. Cash had seen other bull riders shut down, bossed around, but never had he been treated like he was a disease to be avoided—at least not since he’d lit out on his own at nearly seventeen with his GED and a burning desire to be independent and never have to take crap from anyone again.

He’d fought hard for his freedom and reputation and financial security, and no woman with a too-crazy-to-believe story and a likely money grift was going to snatch what he’d earned the hard way.

It was unbelievable that everyone seemed intent on believing the stranger not him. “A woman abandons her baby, in front of thousands, and I’m the bad guy?” He shook his head. “She ditched a baby with a stranger, and no one here thinks we should be calling the cops?” he shot back, when Suzette made the shushing noise again.

He tried to stand—much easier to make his case with his physical presence—but the AEBR intern Maddy Ramone, perched on the arm of his chair, blocking him in, the long line of her slim back straight and arrogant.

Dismissed.

He was shushed again, like a curious child while the grown-ups spoke, and it reminded him of the time he’d been ten, living with an aunt or a cousin or a family friend of his mother, and there’d been a family gathering to decide what was “best for the boy,” only it had seemed like everyone had only been interested in what was best for them.

Then his future had been bandied about, and he’d been lied to and surrendered to the state where a family who could take care of him would adopt him and give a home and a horse and a chance to be a cowboy.

Liars.

It still stung. No one wanted an angry, frustrated, dyslexic, rejected boy a couple of years shy of puberty.

For a moment the memory made him see red. His chest felt like a bull had kicked him through his Kevlar vest, and his fists clenched ready to fight for his life again. But no. He’d risen above all that. He’d taught himself to read the fine print of contracts, to charm sponsors, to use language not fists to get what he wanted.

He dragged in a ragged breath and another, forcing his body to relax so he didn’t squeeze the baby.

A baby.

Not mine.

He couldn’t even bring himself to look at it, though he’d been holding it for the last ten minutes.

“I’m right here,” he snapped, infuriated by the conversation that concerned his life, not theirs, and they all huddled around a computer with the boss, backs turned to him.

He was the star. The bull rider on the AEBR program cover. The highest earner the past three years—one of the top riders in the world. His merch was the top seller every flippin’ year. His meet-and-greets habitually sold out. He was one of the featured bull riders in a documentary. He’d had a small but recurring role on a western streaming hit last year.

Cash stood up, jostling Madelyn, but instead of her rolling off the arm of the chair and standing, she fell back into his lap.

“Erahhhugh.” She popped to her feet, elbowing his gut in the process. “Knock it offffff,” she said under her breath. Her onyx eyes shot sparks at him that he swore singed his skin. “Have some self-preservation.” She pushed him back into the chair. “Your future’s being decided.”

“Not without me, it’s not.” Despite his frustration, he kept his voice low, though not as calm as hers. He’d noticed that about her early on—no matter what was happening behind the scenes, she was never flustered.

He stood back up, automatically shifting the baby that had stopped crying but was mouthing his shirt, probably sliming it, but that was what dry cleaners were for. At least it was quiet and didn’t seem to have any teeth yet. How old was it? He still couldn’t wrap his head around the surreal moment in the arena. On Zoom, CEO Bruce shouted. Made demands. Everyone seemed in full appeasement mode.

“This has got to be some sort of a sick joke.” Cash rounded on Maddy who’d also risen. He liked how she stood up to him. Didn’t seem intimidated even though he rarely liked what she said.

“More like cosmic Karma.”

“Huh?”

“Why is it so hard for you to take responsibility for once?”

“Huh?” He felt like his eyes were going to pop out of his head and dent the walls of the small office. “This is somebody else’s baby.”

“You don’t know that,” she snapped. “Christ on a cracker with Cheez Whiz. You boink your
way across the USA annually. I’m surprised you haven’t had a dozen babies shoved in your arms at photo shoots. I actually had a plan for it,” she said as casually as if she was asking for everyone’s takeout order—something she often had to do.

He staggered back a step, shocked by her bottom-of-the-barrel opinion of him. He knew she didn’t like him, but he thought she’d respected his abilities.

The room descended into silence as if someone pulled a plug.

“Who’s that?” the CEO barked from the screen, and as one, all four AEBR tour execs turned
to look at Madelyn.

Cash heard Maddy gulp a swallow and a tinge of satisfaction wiggled through him. He was
not the only one in the hot seat now.

My feelings are a bit mixed. I’m always excited about a new release. A brand new book
going out in the world. I’m also a little sad today because it’s the last book in the Montana Made series. It’s hard to say goodbye to a set of characters who’ve lived in
your head for years. But thinking of something new is part of the fun too.:)

It’s a second chance book, not just for Aria and Ryan but for Aria and her father. A father who left her when she was young, but there were circumstances Aria didn’t know about. I love second chance stories. There’s always a happy ending!

I’ve been thinking a lot about series lately. They’re fun to write but also hard sometimes.
But then, my process for most of my books seems to be part torture, part bliss. When I
talk (Okay, whine) to my friends about it they just tell me it’s part of my process.
Frankly, I’d like another gift book. That’s what we call books that almost write
themselves. I’ve only had one, although I have had some hard books and some a bit
easier to write. But the feeling of the words just pouring out of you is something so
special and so fun!

There are a lot of things about series that I really enjoy. The characters who run through
every book. At first I don’t know them. Usually, two or three books in, I know something
about the other characters. But sometimes I know almost nothing about one of them
until I start their book. Often I send them away to be mentioned but not seen much, if
any. And then I have to figure out what in the world their story is.

In one of my earlier Marietta books, Return of the Cowgirl, I’d sent Glenna away—to Argentina! Then when it was her turn I thought, why in the world did I do that? But it
turned out to be fun.

I like the animals too. Horses, dogs, cats, I like them all. And places—of business,
homes, parks, rodeos, they can all be characters in themselves. I get to revisit them and
each time I learn a little more about them.

Do you like series books? Or do you prefer stand-alone titles?

Happy Reading!

What they don’t know, is why. Their mother knows, but she’s not talking. Hayden Weston, the oldest brother on the Weston ranch ends the feud by reaching out to their two cousins Dylan and Carson Weston.

Both brothers jump at the chance to work with their cousins and eagerly move to the Weston leaving their unhappy childhood memories behind them.

In Home to the Cowboy, we meet Dylan Weston, a seedstock production specialist
like his brother. Because of his unhappy childhood, he isn’t interested in ever getting married but when he gives the leggy brunet outside town walking in the rain trailing a red suitcase behind her, a lift things shift.

June Kincaid grew up in the foster care system and the only family she has is her
best friend Abby. When she finds her boyfriend in bed with someone else, she decides to visit Marietta again, the only place where she’s ever really felt at home. (We meet her in Reckless with the cowboy when she visits Becket Weston to sign a book deal with him). Hopefully she’ll also have time to write the children’s story she’d been thinking about.

What she’s not prepared for is the seriously handsome cowboy who offers her a lift into town. His suggestion that they spend time together until she goes back to Seattle is tempting and sounds uncomplicated. So why does she hesitate?

I spent happy tears giving these two their happy ending – I hope you’ll enjoy it too. And oh,
the reason for the family is also revealed in this story!

Thanks for stopping by!

Elsa has been reading love stories for as long as she can remember and when she ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James, the Brontë sisters, etc. during her Honors studies, she was hooked for life.

Although her three gown-up children rarely acknowledge the fact they have a romance-writing mom, her husband fortunately, is very proud of her, reads every word and is happy to make sure she gets the kissing scenes just right.

She likes the heroines in her stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong. And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity. They are of course, also gorgeous. Her stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.

By Elsa Winckler

A sexy, small-town cowboy intent on righting some wrongs. A woman stranded and wanting to start over…

In the heart of Montana’s breathtaking ranch country, rugged cowboy Dylan Weston is determined to heal a decades-old family feud by uniting the Weston ranches with his cousins and brother-in-law. Strong family bonds and small-town loyalty runs deep in Dylan, and he’s determined to do everything to make this work. But his life and goals skew sideways when he rescues the stunningly beautiful June Kincaid, who is fleeing the big city and a cheating fiancé.

Publishing executive June craves the quiet charm of the quaint Western town to heal her heart and finally chase her own dreams of writing a children’s novel while she works remotely. Sure, the betrayal still stings, but the sexy, protective cowboy ignites a scorching attraction that complicates everything.

Magic, betrayal, and a forbidden love that could spark a war…

Layla Lenhardt never thought her entire life would implode, leaving her one person she could depend on, a magical hacker from the rough side of the city. Three months ago, she hired Livingston Security Firm to help find a missing woman. Their technomancer, Brock Hanes, fell instantly. Layla barely noticed—until danger forced them back together.

Layla is a privileged mortal working for her family’s powerful corporation, Lenhardt Creations. Brock has a bounty on his head from the Governor for using illegal magic to solve crimes. They come from opposite worlds with nothing in common but the risks they’re willing to take to go against the Governor.

Members of the magical community are disappearing in droves and it’s hard not to assume that this is the Governor’s response to the Black Bird Coven’s attack on his mansion. But when Layla uncovers proof that Lenhardt Creations is secretly backing the Governor’s violent retribution, she refuses to stay silent. Layla turns to Brock to expose the conspiracy, protect his people, and help her right her family’s wrongs. But secrets, fear, and divided loyalties threaten to tear them apart.

Because in a city where magic is a crime and love is a liability, choosing each other may be the most dangerous act of all.

A Champion bull rider in need of a reputation salvage. The ambitious intern who excels at spin. A forced exile and an unexpected baby. What else could go wrong?

At the end of the American Extreme Bull Rider tour, fan favorite Cash Hunter again sits at the top of the leaderboard. Standing in the winner’s circle opining about his chances in the finals, a woman he’s never seen runs toward him cursing before shoving a baby into his arms and disappearing. Suddenly the golden boy’s tarnished.

Madelyn Ramone always prepares for success and disaster. While tour execs panic, Maddy steps up with her redemption plan. Publicly embrace fatherhood. Go home. Lay low. Document daddy moments. Take a DNA test. Accompanying him wasn’t part of her plan. She’s going to need her own Kevlar vest to resist his potent sexual pull.

Cash is furious. No one believes the child isn’t his, especially the coolly judgmental Maddy. But he needs her. And she’s gunning for the opportunity. Neither wants to buckle up and head to the small Montana town that holds unpleasant associations and memories for them both.

After the fall of Mother Earth, survival demands power—and love may be the most dangerous peril of all.

In a shattered post-apocalyptic world, only scattered pockets of humanity endure. From the ruins rise Darwin changelings, beings not born of humans, fighting to reclaim what was long ago lost. When mercenaries slaughter her family, Beyla, a gifted shadow walker haunted by grief, wants only to vanish into the Last Shadow and forget the world that betrayed her.

Dragonborn commander Logan Pen has other plans.

Leader of the feared Pen Dragons, Logan hunts the Firestone, a relic powerful enough to shatter the fragile peace that remains. He needs Beyla’s forbidden knowledge to find it. When she steals his treasure and, by dragon law, becomes his unwilling mate, enemies are bound by fate and fire.

As desire flames between rivals and a ruthless enemy closes in, vengeance gives way to destiny. Bound by magic, blood, and an undeniable dragon bond, Beyla and Logan must risk everything—even their hearts.

Ancient Celtic magic, forbidden longing, and destiny bind a healer and a guardian in ways neither can deny…

Eilis O’Brien has always found purpose as her village’s healer, a calling that helps quiet her secret love for Cian Rafferty—the low-born guard she can never hope to marry. But when she’s threatened, her overprotective father, the chieftain, forbids her to work. Retreating to a forgotten wing of their castle, Eilis discovers a hidden chamber and magical mirror, linking her across time to three young witches, descendants from the legendary Witches of Time. Together with the witches, Eilis must awaken her magic to fight the dark forces hunting her.

Cian Rafferty has fought his whole life the cursed burden of gatekeeper. His birthright destroyed his family, but under Chieftain O’Brien’s guidance, he finally has stability and a future—even though it cannot include Eilis, despite their deep love.

But when a demon captures Eilis and drags her into the realm that claimed his mother, Cian embraces the destiny he fought to save her. Together they challenge an ancient evil with only their love to protect them.

Whitney Hopewell, Hazard’s newly elected mayor and former librarian, is determined to protect the town she loves. When a smooth Boston developer offers a sleek solution to Hazard’s affordable housing crisis, she’s cautiously hopeful. Derrick Cross is charming, intelligent, and undeniably intriguing.
But Derrick hasn’t come to Hazard to help. He’s returned to settle a centuries-old score.
Perfect for fans of heartfelt second-chance romance, emotional time-slip stories, and love that refuses to fade.

They were supposed to spend the Fourth of July weekend with their closest friends—fireworks, laughter, traditions. Instead, Merritt Sullivan and Ben Samuels broke up on the drive to the lake, before the first spark lit the sky.

But after a strange accident on the dock, they wake up to find that everything’s changed. It’s five years later. They’re no longer a couple. Their friends’ lives have shifted in ways they never saw coming. Careers, relationships, even loyalties have rearranged—some for the better, some painfully worse. And neither of them remembers the years in between.

Forced to navigate a future they don’t recall, Merritt and Ben must work together to understand what fractured not only their relationship, but their entire friend group. The only way back—if going back is even possible—is to face the heartbreak they once tried to outrun.

As old feelings resurface and new truths come to light, they’ll have to decide: is the future worth keeping…or worth rewriting?

by Jeannie Watt

He’s the last cowboy she wants to ask for help. He’s the only one offering a chance…

Never in her wildest dreams did equine specialist Maclyn Kane imagine she’d beg her ex for help five years after he tanked her shot at her dream job. But once again she’s out of work with two horses and a dog to feed, and the independent cowgirl can’t pass up any offers—even humiliating and grudging ones.

Rancher Trev Matthews is desperate to find someone to help him through calving season, so when Maclyn, the woman who wrecked his truck and lied about it at the end of their rodeo careers responds to his job posting, he reluctantly hires her—temporarily. As soon as he finds someone with experience, she’s out. Or so he thinks.

Time supposedly heals all wounds. It also can provide clarity and proof he was too quick to judge. But how can the former rodeo star convince the woman who refuses to depend on anyone except herself to trust him and that temporary can become permanent?

One reviewer calls it “crazy and charming.”

That’s the reaction I hoped for.

These books are western romances, but I also wanted to write something fun, which is where the setting comes in. The Roped in Time books are a mashup of the Wild West and contemporary times.

Burning Scrub is a former ghost town that an aging evangelical turned into an off-the- grid commune, but followers soon decided that life on a poor commune wasn’t for them, and they set the town up as a church so they wouldn’t have to pay taxes. When that didn’t deliver a steady enough paycheck to pay the bills, they turned it into a Wild West theme park for a high-end, international clientele.

The main characters are:

Beau Jones – national singing sensation who needs to work on his country brand,
whether he likes it or not. He falls in love with Belle, the town doctor.

Dr. Belle Forsythe – a beautiful, blue-eyed brunette with plenty of brains but no sense
of style. Signing a five-year contract with a Wild West theme park seemed like a fun way
to pay off her student debt at the time. She doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but
when she falls in love with Beau, she discovers that the chemistry behind it is real.

Jayce Hanson – a real western Marlboro Man. This poor schmuck is madly in love with
Belle, but he’s about to get his heart broken. (Don’t feel too sorry for him, though. He
gets his HEA in Book 2, Time’s Up, Cowboy.) He doesn’t love Beau.

Adam Caldwell – supply chain manager, procurement officer, and getaway driver. He’s
also the town safety officer, but that’s a loosely defined role because the day(s) without
incident rarely make it past 0.

Benny Jenkins – 93-year-old town founder, mayor, and former evangelist (also grifter,
depending on who you’re talking to). He lacks a filter and quite a few morals.

Leon Schmidt – Beau Jones’s agent.

Linda Lovett – 6-year-old who pops up in unexpected places and blabs the town’s
secrets at inopportune moments.

Mavis Jenkins – Benny’s 68-year-old daughter. She’s in charge of cultural sensitivity,
religious requirements, and dietary restrictions.

Pearl and Grady Lovett – Linda’s parents. Grady writes the scripts and Pearl designs the costumes. They’re real multitaskers.

Shanda – mystery woman. What a piece of work.

Tilly Wynn – small but mighty. She handles all external communications and runs the
town’s schoolhouse. Her secrets are revealed in Book 3. Until then, she’s pretty much
just an opinionated bystander who is friends with everyone.

Wyatt Earp, aka Sheik Ali – the town’s client. He’s partially responsible for Adam’s
poor safety record.

There are five books in the series.

The next book, Time’s Up Cowboy, releases June 23rd . If you drop by the Tule Book
Club on Facebook this week, advance copies are being given away.

I hope the year is off to a great start and you’re surviving whatever Mother Nature has sent your way. Here in Northeastern Indiana, it’s been snowier than usual. And while the snow-covered landscape is pretty, I’m itching for spring to roll in any day now.

Crazy weather aside, this time of year mirror’s the beginning timeline for my February book release—THE RODEO COWBOY’S REDEMPTION. Galentine’s Day (the day before Valentine’s Day) is when we first see Norah and Rhett’s worlds collide (literally) and frustrations flare. And, oh, did I have fun writing these two!

Stubborn? Check.

Independent? Check Check.

Sexual Tension? Check, Check, and Check.

Where these two don’t immediately match is their relationships with their families. The Miles family is close-knit and supportive, even protective at times. They’re the kind of family Rhett Foster only wishes he had as a kid. And honestly, being Jaxon Miles’s best friend, he did spend a good deal of time around them growing up. But his own family life is a bit messier, and the relationship with his dad…tenuous at best.

Which made falling for Norah Miles that much more complicated. There are rules in this new, post-rodeo reality that must be followed and lines not to cross. Just like “there’s no crying in baseball”, Rhett’s father is adamant that “though shalt not date our client”. But when the heart gets involved, sometimes hard and fast rules get stretched…

In addition to guiding this couple through their family and relationship redemption minefields, I also enjoyed incorporating the cabin renovations project into the story. I was on the tail end of a “refresh” project in my own home, and could relate to Norah agonizing over colors and textures, themes and decorations. When you put in all that time and work, you want to cross the finish line with a “product” to be proud of. The way my brain works, there is usually a LOT of contemplation over major (and sometimes even minor) design changes. I’ve been known to take months to settle on a new paint color for rooms in my house. LOL

So far, @myorangeeditor has approved of all the interior design changes. Though, he’d prefer I spend less time helping install LVP or backsplash tile and more time at my computer desk…

I don’t know any real cowboys. I read about them in the novels that my fellow western authors write; I’ve watched myriad TV westerns both new and old and rodeo videos galore. We had horses for fifteen years, so I’ve met lots of horsemen, some may even have thought of themselves as cowboys, some sure acted as if they thought they were. But a cattle drive in Montana is very different from riding the horse trails in a state park in the Midwest.

So when it came time for me to write cowboys as characters in my new series for Tule Publishing, Juniper Falls Ranch, I admit I was daunted. Mostly because my heroes have all been pretty much beta guys—kind, sensitive, nerdy men who have no idea how truly desirable they are until my heroines show them. Oh, don’t get me wrong, they’re all pretty confident in their own abilities, they’re just not the swaggering type I always pictured cowboys to be. I’ve never really written alpha heroes because the men in my life, Husband, Son, the friends we are drawn to, are quietly strong, thoughtful men who are always there for me without fanfare or machismo.

But as I learned more and more about cowboys, I discovered that “alpha” didn’t really define the cowboy heroes I was reading about and watching. The swaggering stereotypical cowboy I’d always imagined was so far off the mark that I was actually shocked … and delighted. That quiet strength, that determination that I’d written into my beta winemakers, veterinarians, carpenters, college professors, and chefs were also hallmarks of the cowboy persona. When I created bronc rider Del Foster and rodeo cutting champion Bo Kennedy, those qualities—gentleness, intelligence, supportiveness, loyalty, steadiness, awareness of their own emotions as well as others—were all things my cowboys could be … and are.

And okay, I admit I had to learn to curb my heroes’ proclivity to be too chatty—something my critique partners and my editor ding me on even when I’m not writing cowboys, it’s been so very rewarding to create the heroes at Juniper Falls Ranch in Marietta, Montana—strong, brave, gentle men who make readers’ hearts (and mine!) beat just a little faster.

The Cowboy’s Comeback, book 2 in the Juniper Falls Ranch series, released January 29. Here’s a little excerpt that shows the caring character of my beta cowboy, Bo Kennedy as he starts training with his ex, Cassie Franklin and her new horse:

Bo walked around Storm, touching her withers, her back, running a hand over her rump and then back around to the other side to stroke her neck, murmuring all the time. “Good mare. Good girl. You’re okay, aren’t you?”

Storm’s ears turned forward as he came around and Cassie could see that she was listening to him, paying attention to him. He rubbed the mare’s cheek and then under her full black-and-white mane. “You’re a pretty gal.” His tone was quiet, like he was calming a frightened child. “Yeah, you’re a sweet girl.”

Cassie damn near laughed out loud at that one. There was nothing sweet about Storm. The horse was a bundle of energy and nerves that she’d been trying to corral for the last two months. Storm had cow sense. Cassie had seen her cut on the ranch where she’d bought her. She’d even worked her herself when the ranch owner had insisted that he see her ride before he agreed to sell Storm to her. The mare knew what to do and so did Cassie, but for some reason, they weren’t gelling. She knew it in her head but admitting it to Bo Kennedy was just too humiliating.

“Cassie, I need you to relax.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re tight as a tick.” Bo took the lead rope from her and slung it over his shoulder while Storm stood quietly beside him. “Loosen up your shoulders. Shimmy a little bit.”

“Are you serious?”

“Totally.”

Out in the bleachers, Jake hooted. “Yeah, come on, Cass. Let’s see you shimmy.” The others laughed and clapped, and their horses moved restlessly on the fence. But Storm remained quiet, her attention focused on Bo.

“Quiet down, you clowns,” Bo ordered. “Pay attention. You might learn something.”

They sobered immediately at Bo’s sharp tone, but Cassie wasn’t about to shimmy. Instead, still glaring at Bo, she rolled her shoulders, twisted from the waist slightly, and shook out her arms.

“There. I’m relaxed.”

He shook his head and tilted his head toward Storm, his hands still stroking and rubbing the mare’s dark coat. “Nope. She’s relaxed, but you’re not.”

Sure enough, Storm’s eyes were half closed, her ears were forward, and her hind leg was cocked. Her mare, who was usually agitated and ready to jump or flee, stood peacefully waiting. In spite of herself, Cassie reached out a hand to touch the horse’s neck and smoothed the warm hair there. Storm reacted by stepping to the side—away from Cassie.

“She can feel the tension in you.” Bo patted Storm’s other side and murmured. “Easy. You’re okay.” Then he came around and put his big hand over Cassie’s. “You two need to learn to trust each other. You’re expecting her to go crazy. She’s expecting you to shout and tug on her. Time to start over.”

The tingle that his hand on hers caused made her want … Well, it didn’t matter what it made her want. What did matter was that he was talking about starting from the ground up. No way! “I don’t have time to start over. Futurity is only a few months away.”

“You’ll never even qualify for Futurity if you two don’t get your act together. You’ve got to build that trust, establish yourself as the alpha, and then bond with her. You know this, Cass. You had it with Pierre.” He tipped his head and peered into her face. “Didn’t you?”

Cassie swallowed hard. She and Pierre had communicated on a level that she’d never had with another horse. He simply knew what she wanted, and he wanted to please her. She loved him unconditionally from the moment she’d gotten him when she was sixteen, and they’d been an unbeatable barrel-racing team for over ten years.

She hadn’t expected that starting over with a new event and a new horse would be this hard. But Storm had balked and been defiant from the moment they’d landed at Juniper Falls Ranch. She’d worked with Del a couple of times before Bo arrived, and the older trainer had told her exactly what Bo had just said—Storm didn’t trust her. Even old Gus, the grizzled cowboy who seemed to be in charge of the horses and the barn, had shaken his head as he watched her in the arena, trying to longe a wound-up Storm. Something had to change. Maybe it was her, maybe it was the horse. But the only thing she could change was herself, and she wasn’t ready to give up on the mare.

Almost as if he’d read her mind, Bo said softly, “It’s okay. She’s a good one. This girl is aching for some guidance. You’re the one who’s going to give it to her. You can do it.”

Her day job is working as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader, however, writing is Nan’s first and most enduring passion. She can’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t writing—she wrote her first romance novel at the age of ten and is still writing, but now from the viewpoint of a wiser, slightly rumpled, woman in her prime. Nan lives in the Midwest with her husband of 50 years, where they split their time between a house in the city and a cottage on a lake.
