This is the fifth book in my Wrapped Up in Christmas series. The books do feature recurring characters, but are written as standalone reads so if you’ve not read any of the first books, you’ll still know what’s going on.

One of the many things that happens in this story is a zany Christmas festival. Wrapped Up in Christmas Faith has a doozy as this year Pine Hill’s Christmas festival is dubbed as the ‘Grandma Games’ which is short for the Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer Games. Oh, the fun I had with that!

Here’s a little peak of a scene:

A catchy name for a month-long Christmas contest? Maggie thought more along the lines of Claudia’s original suggestion of a simple and to the point title. Christmas Craziness fit, but she knew the women would disagree.

“Sorry, I’m no help. I’ve not celebrated Christmas much since I was a kid.” Maggie stuck the rest of her cookie in her mouth, then brushed her hands together. She hadn’t celebrated Christmas much even as a kid. For her, foster care hadn’t lent itself to merry memories.

“I’m so glad that you’re going to be in Pine Hill this year so we can change that.” Christmas lights twinkled in Sarah’s eyes. “You need to be immersed in the magic of Christmas and that all this ‘work’ is nothing compared to the wonderfulness of the holidays.”

As far as the magic of Christmas, Maggie didn’t believe such a thing existed. Her childhood Christmases had been so-so, and her adult ones had consisted of a ‘fancy meal’ if on base and survival if she were out in the field. Christmas and every other holiday had been just another day of life. But since she needed to be involved in Sarah’s plans, she nodded and made a one hundred percent truthful statement. “Christmas in Pine Hill is definitely going to be unlike anything I’ve experienced in the past.”

Maybelle made a clicking noise that had Maggie glancing her way. She held the woman’s blue gaze, refusing to squirm although she sure felt as if she should. Fortunately, the contest conversation resumed. Maggie sat quietly, munching on a third cookie, while the women brainstormed name ideas, but nothing stuck. The Christmas music playing in the background changed songs. Jeannie glanced up, bounced a little, then grinned at the tune.

“Grandma,” the toddler sing-sang, collecting adoring sighs as her due.

Shaking her head at how the child had the whole room admiring her, Maggie joked, “You could call your contest the ‘Grandma got run over by a Reindeer’ Games. Maybe shorten it to the Grandma Games.” She chuckled. “That name would definitely snag people’s attention.”

Rather than laugh off the outlandish suggestion, Sarah’s eyes brightened and the other women all grinned as if they’d just stumbled upon something fabulous.

“It’s so…unique. And fun. I love it.” Rosie clapped her hands together.

“Me, too,” Ruby agreed.

“It sounds like a good time. Just what we’re hoping for.” Sarah looked pleased.

“Well, unless you’re a grandma.” Claudia’s grandmotherly face twisted in concern. “Then, it might not sound like such a good time.”

Stifling a snort, Maggie coughed to clear cookie from her throat.

Everyone looked at Maybelle, waiting for her yea or nay, including Maggie. Surely the woman would shoot down such a silly suggestion. Maggie had not been serious and couldn’t believe the others were. Instead of speaking the sanity Maggie expected, Maybelle nodded.

“The name will garner lots of curious interest. I’ll talk with the mayor, then Sarah can take the idea to the local businesses and let them tweak how they want to participate should they want to make changes to what’s already planned.” She tapped her perfectly manicured nails against the tabletop. “Sarah can definitely work with this.”

“Just so long as there aren’t any real reindeers running over grandmas,” Claudia reiterated, looking serious enough that Maggie bit back another snort. “We can’t have any grandmas getting hurt.”

Rosie rolled her eyes. “Of course, there won’t be real reindeers. Although we could see if Harvey Farms wants to sponsor something involving their reindeer. Maybe we could do a Reindeer Run sort of like that thing they do in Spain with the bulls.” Rosie chuckled. “That would be a fun addition. We could call it Yuletide O-le!”

I get giggly inside just thinking on all the fun shenanigans the characters get into in this story. :) So, much fun. )

My hometown does have a Christmas parade and vendors around our town square. Nothing on the scale of the ‘Grandma Games’, but it’s still a fun night that makes me proud to be a part of my hometown.

Isabelle’s cheeks burned and her stomach gurgled loud enough he’d likely heard. Maybe if she ignored him, he’d go away. Hoping to distract herself from the fact that he stood right behind her, she looked for more stray tinsel, didn’t see any, so read Lou’s Diner’s joke of the day.

What do you call a snowman with a six-pack?

Yeah, that wasn’t helping because she’d bet her Christmas morning goodies that Prince Annoying was sporting a six-pack under his army T-shirt.

 The abdominal snowman.

“Can’t say I blame you for making sure our paths crossed,” he continued in that I’m hot and we both know it drawl.

He wasn’t going to go away, not without torturing her first. Face tightly pinched, Isabelle turned, hoping he accurately read how much she wished he’d disappear. Maybe the abdominal snowman could gobble him up so she could get her lunch in peace and forget he existed. Her gaze collided with broad shoulders that had her gulping. There was a toughness about him that said anything trying to gobble him up would be in for a run for their money and would lose.

“I recall mentioning not to bother saying hello if our paths did cross again.”

Disappointment hit that she hadn’t imagined how good-looking he was. Or how tall. He towered over her five foot four inches. And if there was ever a competition for an abdominal snowman, he’d win. Scolding herself for noticing how his T-shirt clung to his muscles, she upped her glare game. Maybe he’d take the hint and leave.

“Yep.” His lips twitched, almost as if he knew he made her insides jitter like a shaken snow globe. “That’s why I didn’t say hello.”

Isabelle looked upward at Lou’s tiled ceiling, counted to six, and winced when she couldn’t think of the next number to save her life. Not good for someone with an accounting degree.

“Oops, sorry. I didn’t realize that I should have been more specific. I meant for you not to say anything at all,” she clarified.

“Not say anything and let all your effort in following me be wasted? Tsk. Tsk.” His eyes twinkled brighter than Lou’s shiny Christmas tree lights. “I’d hate to disappoint you that way.”

“Seeing you again is disappointing.” Exhilarating, her inner voice corrected.

Why, oh, why, did being near him make breathing difficult? It was as if he sucked up all the oxygen and what air was left made her head spin.

“Disappointing?” He gave an exaggerated fake sigh. “I thought you were happy to see me.”

“Pfft. Wrong again.” Annoyed was what she was.

At him because he’d occupied all her thoughts since their windy encounter. But even more so, at herself, because excitement surged at the way merriment danced in his eyes when they looked in hers. Approval shone in their hazel depths, as if he enjoyed their verbal sparring and that she had no qualms in standing up to him. Not only did he not mind; he seemed to appreciate that she wasn’t falling at his boots.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you didn’t like me.” He sounded as if he didn’t believe anyone capable of such a feat. His ego alone could power Santa’s sleigh, no reindeer needed.

Oh, y’all, I do love this book and can’t wait to hear if y’all fall in love with Zach the way I did while writing him.

My Wrapped Up in Christmas series originated with Hallmark Publishing, but with their closing, I’m thrilled that Tule is continuing these special stories. I love everything about my Wrapped Up in Christmas series—the small town, Christmas, the military connection, quilting, and the characters. Oh, how I love the people in Pine Hill, Kentucky, especially the Butterflies-a group of older women who are lifelong friends, town matriarchs, a bit zany, and wannabe matchmakers. Think Golden Girls meets 80 for Brady.

When I wrote the first Wrapped Up in Christmas book my goal was to write a story that gave all the warm fuzzy Hallmark feels, but had deeper, sometimes heart-wrenching, backstories. I wanted my readers to feel as if they’d stepped into the world of Pine Hill and to feel the emotions the characters were feeling—the heartache, the laughter, the holiday spirit, the healing, and especially, the love. My goal with each new book has been to continue those things, and to, hopefully, improve with each story. I am still striving toward that goal with the fourth book, Wrapped Up in Christmas Love, which will be out November 12, 2024, and with book five coming your way Christmas 2025.

And here’s a snippet from where Bodie has first arrived in Pine Hill to thank whomever Sarah Smith is for making his Quilts of Valor. Sarah is at a church gathering to make Christmas ornaments for a fundraiser at a town festival and is surrounded by Butterflies, of which her late aunt was one. Her aunt had left her a large older home that she’d dreamed of turning into a bed and breakfast, but never had. Sarah’s dream is to make that happen—somehow.

“Aunt Jean’s house isn’t crumbling.” Not anymore, thanks to Sarah’s bank loan and her having spent every spare moment over the past year working on restoring the outside and the downstairs to their former glory. “It just needed some TLC.”

And a repair guy to stick around to finish up the job. Hopefully God would answer her prayers and the right person would respond to her help wanted ad. Otherwise, she’d have to delay her planned grand opening of Hamilton House.

The thought of that made her heart hurt a little. She wanted to do this for Aunt Jean.

Please, Lord, let them respond.

The door to the community room opened, and all heads turned to see who’d shown up to join their ornament-making festivities.

Sarah’s eyes widened at the unfamiliar six-foot-plus man wearing jeans and a sherpa-lined blue jean jacket. He rubbed his hands, warming his bare fingers from the chill outdoors as he surveyed the Christmas chaos Sarah adored.

Ask and the Lord shall deliver.

Literally.

Okay, so she didn’t really believe the stranger was there to answer her prayers, but still, his timing was impeccable. Who was he?

Apparently, she wasn’t the only one wondering. It wasn’t that you could hear a pin drop—not with the holiday music playing—but there was a collective curiosity pervading the now-muted room that had been loud with chatter prior to his arrival.

“I’ve been extra-good this year and Santa’s delivering early,” Rosie whispered under her breath, elbowing Claudia. Her lively eyes sparkled with mischief. “That’s exactly what I asked for.”

Giving the newcomer a once-over, Maybelle snorted. “You ain’t been that good your whole life.”

Claudia snickered. “That’s the truth.”

“That one there makes me wish I had been.” Rosie sighed, fanning her face. “He’s easy on these old eyes. A few years back, I’d have invited him over for some of my grandma’s cinnamon bread. That never fails to warm a man over to my way of thinking.”

Still amused at the timing of the man’s arrival, Sarah’s lips twitched. Rosie’s grandmother’s cinnamon bread was the stuff legends were made of. Women had been attempting to copy the recipe for years without success. Rosie closely guarded the recipe as she swore it was guaranteed to put a sparkle in a man’s eye. She wasn’t about to let the other town women in on her little secret.

With almost every eye on him, the man scanned the room, apparently searching for something, or someone. He didn’t look impressed—more like he didn’t belong in the room or around happy people in general. With his observant, stern expression, he stuck out like a pumpkin on Christmas morning.

Despite the stranger’s serious demeanor, Rosie was right that he was easy to look at. Give the man a smile and he’d make women of all ages swoon.

Who was he and why was he there?
