DIAL M FOR MUD CAKE – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Author Kaz Delaney! (Plus Giveaway!)

A belated Happy 4th to all my U.S. friends and readers! There’s a reason for mentioning that a month too late – you see, my latest Rosie Hart adventure was set with July 4th as a background. And as I created a fun celebration, I once more so envied that little town of Airlie Falls and their close-knit community. How much fun would it be to live there… Sigh…

So, about this story: I was quite young when I first saw Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder – maybe too young – because it terrified me. Few would argue over Hitchcock’s ability to provide suspense – certainly not me, the proof being the fact that the story has stayed with me for all those years. I can still see Grace Kelly in that low-lit bedroom…

Suspense and terror aside, as I grew older, I came to appreciate the story-line, and it was basically from that idea my own story was born. My series, the Hart of Texas Murder Mysteries, is way more light-hearted than anything Hitch would present, yet right from the start I had a title in my head, my spoof of the original – Dial M for Mud Cake – hoping I could find the story it represented.

It took six books, but in this last, the 6th, I found it – and was enormous fun to create. And every day I opened that manuscript it made me smile. Of course, in the way things should go, my story bears little resemblance to Hitchcock’s story other than a telephone call and an order for murder. Basically, that’s where Hitch and I parted ways. However, it was those two things that led to the creation of a scene I had so much fun with – and will share in a moment.

Despite the fun, it wasn’t all straightforward. I knew I wanted my poor heroine Rosie, to be confused by the strange order for the mud cake. After all, as a baker, that would usually be a straightforward event for her. But that’s also when my usual modus operandi went off script. You see, normally, Rosie would be hunting down a murderer, often trying to clear the name of someone close to her.

This time there was no body, just someone who mistakenly thought Rosie to be a professional assassin who required the words Mud Cake as code for the hit. So, for Rosie – and myself – everything was upside down. Rosie wasn’t, at first, searching for a murderer, but a potential victim. A stranger. Not seeking justice for a dead person but trying to keep someone alive! To make it worse, I added a ticking clock. The deed had to be completed by the 4th of July, or matters would be taken into other hands. Rosie couldn’t let that happen. While ever that customer thought she was the assassin, the victim had a chance of survival.

And all this while helping to plan and execute the town’s extravagant plans for the Independence Day celebrations, try to curb the wild and ridiculous spending of the Fab Four who have discovered the home shopping channels (because surely nonagenarians wouldn’t really need a three-man tent and a bucking bronco – and that was just for starters!), as well as – you guessed it, also trying to prove her suspicion that the murder of an elderly heiress is connected to her own misguided cake order.

But let’s go back to that first phone call. Keep in mind that Rosie thinks this is a regular—if slightly odd—order for a mud cake.

Waving away Miz Lipskie’s warning whisper, I strode into the airy study just off the foyer. The voice on the other end wasn’t what I’d expected. It was low and muffled, and I’d barely said hello before the order came through—just as Miz Lipskie had said.

“I want to order a mud cake.”

“Yes sir, we’d be delighted to help you.” Actually, I was taking Miz Lipskie’s word for it that it was a male because the voice was so stifled it was hard for me to tell the exact gender. Still, she’d spoken to him several times and apparently been barked at, so obviously she knew.

There was a long pause before he replied. “We? I thought you worked alone?”

“Well, I do, but I have an assistant who helps me in the day-to-day running of the business.”

“Sheesh! Everyone’s a corporation these days! Even you people!” I was about to let that pass when he threw in his next comment. “Your number was passed on. What? You got a club or something? What’s with two of you working the same area? I thought you guys were pretty hard to find!”

I accepted the guy’s reference as a gender inclusive description, but frowned over the comment. “Two of us? Two bakers?”

The response was a low chuckle. “Sure, if that’s what you want to call yourselves. No skin off my nose. I just want the job done.”

He had a funny way of expressing himself that I found confusing but I did understand he wanted cake and that was something I could deliver. “I can do that. Now if I could just have some details? I ne—”

“Just the basics, right? I was told you’d only require the basics.”

“Well, I guess if you consider name and address, and your requirements to be basics, then I guess that’s what we do.” What was with this man? “But how about we start with the cake. Like, do you want chocolate mud? Caramel mud? Strawberry mud? White chocolate mud?”

“I thought you’d just do the job! What’s with the twenty questions?” He sighed. “So what? What’s your most popular? Simplest? I want that.”

“Chocolate. Now sir, what about cream? Do you want fresh or—?”

“Fresh? Hey, hey, stop right there! I don’t want the details, right? That other broad told me you were the best, so I figured you’d just get on with it. Geez—I got a weak stomach.”

This was the craziest order I’d ever taken. He was upset by cream? “Lactose problem?”

The response was a roar of laughter. “Hey, you got a sense of humor! I like that!” The laughter turned into a coughing fit and I waited it through, wondering why I had the feeling it wasn’t genuine. “Just no mess, okay? I don’t like mess. Now, I was told you’d do it for ten. Is that right?”

“Um, I’d usually charge fifteen for a layered cake, there’s a—”

“Fifteen! Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?”

I didn’t actually hear a phone slam down, but I kind of sensed it. One moment he was there, and the next he wasn’t and I was left with a dead line. What in heavens…?

When I turned, Miz Lipskie stood in the doorway, arms folded and wearing an I-told-you-so expression. “Tell me I’m not the only one who thinks that man is a bit strange!”

“No, Miz Lipskie,” I began slowly, my mind whirling, “I don’t think you are.”

I had such fun with this and subsequent scenes with this mysterious caller. And imagine Rosie’s shock when she, later, finally understands that he’s not just quibbling over $5, he thinks it’s an extra $5000. $15,000 for a mud cake? Even she concedes she’s not that good. 😊

I’ve been writing in Grand, Montana for five years now, and it’s begun to take on a life of its own. With the release of The Cowboy’s Redemption, my eighth book in Grand, I thought I’d give readers a chance to get to know the town itself a little better.

“Grand hugged the banks of the Yellowstone River. The first McGregors to settle here had been Irish sutlers evicted from a British fort for selling whiskey to soldiers. The two enterprising brothers took the money they’d earned and invested it in cattle—although, according to family legend, they never quite managed to stay on the right side of the law. Whiskey barrels continued to overflow in the McGregor cellars well into the twentieth century.

“The town got its name from the plans those two brothers had dreamed up for the town. Unfortunately, Grand got upstaged by nearby Billings and its grip on the new railroad. For his part, Jake was happy with the way history played out. Grand’s population topped out at six thousand—a nice, even number. ” ~ The Rancher Takes a Family

The boardwalk on the waterfront, which borders the Yellowstone River, is another favorite place for characters to hang out:

“Glittering lights trussed the underbelly of a black, star-speckled sky. They draped from every tree, shrub, and railing. Every storefront—every business—they all shouted, let the season begin.

“He’d come downtown intent on buying the perfect gifts for his nephew and niece at the annual midnight craft fair. They’d shut down the waterfront from the town hall to the library. No cars allowed. People flowed freely down the main street, then up the river boardwalk, checking out handcrafted merchandise at the numerous vending stalls.” ~ The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby

Originally, Grand had two ranches—the Wagging Tongue, which belongs to the McGregor brothers and borders on the Tongue River, and the Running River Ranch, its next-door neighbor. Since then I’ve added the Endeavour Ranch, home to an indoor arena and a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo that takes place every February, a seasonal smoke jumping operation for the state of Montana, a free clinic, and a group home for troubled youth.

Grand now has a high school, a strip mall, a daycare, law firm, sheriff’s office… Hannah Brand, from Sweetheart Montana, set up her own brewery here, too. The Grand Master Brewery and Taproom first appears in The Montana Doctor and has become one of my favorite places. I’ve used it in several books now:

“The Grand Master Brewery and Taproom occupied a weathered brick building that had once been an old dairy. The building itself dated from the mid-1800s when Grand was established. Inside, pub tables with chess boards carved into them butted the walls on opposite sides of the room. Regular tables that seated four people—more, if the people were friendly—hogged the real estate under the street-facing front window. Long shelves held an assortment of board games. A metalwork cowboy riding a bucking bronco hung from the ceiling. Hannah’s brother, an artist, had made it for her.

“The bar, complete with a brass footrail, squared off against the front window from the back of the room. Right next to the bar hovered a door that led into the brewery itself. Between that magic door and the brewery lurked another, more private, entrance to an apartment above.” ~ The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby

And Grand continues to grow.

Talking About Secondary Characters

Hi Everyone,

It’s so nice to be back on Tule’s blog to visit with you and to share a bit about The Great Montana Cowboy Auction, the latest in a series I’ve been writing about — you guessed it — cowboys!

While it definitely features cowboys and is set in Elmer, Montana, this book has a broader scope than the earlier ones. Those focused on the relationship of a single couple. But in The Great Montana Cowboy Auction, while there is still a ‘focus’ couple – it’s more of an ‘ensemble piece.’

The main reason I’ve written romance novels over the years is because I love to explore relationships – and the relationship between two people that deepens and eventually encourages them to fall in love and become a couple is, to me, always fascinating.

But couples don’t live in isolation. They have family, friends, associates, neighbors. In another of my great loves – family history research – these people are called FANs, an acronym that the astute, well-respected genealogist, Elizabeth Shown Mills, coined from the initial letters (or should it be FFANs?) to describe the people who are part of the context of the focus person’s life. In novels we call them “secondary characters.”

Generally, no matter what book I’m writing, during the editing process I can almost always count on my editor (not just one editor, but all of my editors since the beginning of time!) saying, “You might want to think about cutting back on the secondary characters.”

Er, well, yes. But it’s a rare life that has just two people in it. We all exist in relationships beyond the one we create with our significant other – and characters in books are no different. And those FANs do their part in making the central characters who they are.

So, I love secondary characters – in my family history research, of course, but even more in the books I write. I learn about the people I’m researching in our family history by learning about the people who mattered to them, whose lives impacted theirs. And I learn about my main characters exactly the same way.

Polly McMaster, the main character of The Great Montana Cowboy Auction, jumped full-blown onto the page the minute I started the book. That was a surprise for me because, usually, my heroes are the ones threatening to take over on page one. And while Sloan Gallagher, cowboy-turned-actor-turned-Hollywood-star, is definitely capable of doing that, he meets his match in Polly.

Polly is the poster child for If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. It isn’t that she wants so much busyness in her life; she certainly doesn’t go looking for it. It’s just that so many things — and so many people – depend on her.

She is the widowed mother of four kids, a woman who holds two jobs – postmistress and mayor of Elmer, Montana – who takes part-time online university classes, who is the mainstay of not just her kids’ lives, but of also her widowed mother’s and her unmarried sister’s. So when local rancher Maddie Fletcher is in danger of losing her ranch to foreclosure and the community decides to have an auction to raise money to save it, guess who ends up in charge.

Of course, Polly can’t say no because it’s a Worthy Cause, and Polly believes in Worthy Causes. She was one, after all, when her husband Lew died and the locals all gathered round to care for her and her kids. Now — once again – it’s Polly’s turn. And in the course of getting the auction off the ground, Polly’s life – her past, her choices, her decisions — intersect with many others’. Her FANs have an impact on her — and, of course, vice versa.

One of those is Polly’s widowed mother, Joyce, who’s getting to grips with life on her own since the death of her rancher husband. She’s sold the ranch to the Nichols brothers, Mace and Shane (if you read A Cowboy’s Tears or The Cowboy Steals a Lady, you’ll have met them before they became “secondary characters”) and she’s moved to Elmer to live with Polly.

Joyce helps give structure to the family life Polly is holding together. She’s learning macrame and economics and Spanish and has recently taken a job as a hospital receptionist in Livingston because, unlike Polly, Joyce needs to be busier, to find a new purpose in her life. What she finds is nothing she expects. I was as surprised as Joyce was. Also, Joyce is the one who suggests an auction to raise money to help Maddie. So, basically, everything that happens after that, Polly can blame on her mother.

And then there’s Celie, Polly’s younger sister. Two sisters less alike could hardly be imagined (unless you knew my mother and her sister, and, yes, they were perhaps a bit of inspiration — sometimes art does imitate life!)

While Polly deals with reality here and now on a regular in-your-face basis, Celie takes her reality in bite-sized pieces. She has her reasons. But she has a fantasy life that is a whole lot more interesting and, she would say, saner than her sister’s real one.

Until it’s not.

When Celie’s fantasy collides with reality, she has some serious decisions to make. I thought Celie would be an interesting subplot – a foil for Polly, as it were. But Celie had no intention of being a subplot. She was tired of playing second fiddle. She had a story to tell – and by the time I got to 100,000 words I understood that all too well. I began to cut. And cut. Suffice it to say, Celie will have her own book coming out next spring.

And there’s Sara. Polly’s oldest daughter, at nineteen, is as structured and by-the-book as her mother is not. Sara was another surprise – to me and her mother both. I thought I understood Sara quite well until I got inside her head. There I found that Sara has hidden depths that probably surprise even Sara herself.

As in real life, each of these women’s lives weaves in and out of the others’. They are primary characters in their own stories, secondary in each other’s. They create a community – and a context – in which The Great Montana Cowboy Auction takes place.

If course, they are not the only ones who have an impact on each other’s lives. Every one of the characters matters. Some provide a reason for something to happen, some provide lenses through which to understand why someone behaves the way she does.

Surprisingly, to me at least, it’s a lot like family history. I’ve now spent nearly 40 years trying to understand the reasons my characters do what they do, what motivates them. And it turns out that both ancestors and characters in books respond to the other people in their lives. Those people matter. They have their own stories when we have the space to tell them.

And not one of them is really ‘secondary.’ But there are word count limits, so editors are sometimes compelled to tell us that they are!

The Soulmate Equation meets Scandal

My new novel, TWO SIDES OF A SECRET, is out. It’s book 2 in my secret ties series and follows another adoptee from the adoption group, Lauren, who has no use for her birth family. Unlike Nichelle from A KISS FROM THE PAST, Lauren doesn’t even want to know who her birth parents are. She’s happily going through life as a florist, running her retired adoptive parents’ business, although longs for a different life as a social media strategist on a political campaign. Again, we examine nature versus nurture.

Which brings us to the Scandal angle. I came to the Shonda Rhimes/Kerry Washington show late and ended up binging all the seasons. It was spectacular the way all the political intrigue unfolded, and it captured and held my attention for weeks. You never really knew for sure what these people’s politics actually were, but they were willing to do anything to hold on to power no matter what. Enter Olivia Pope, who’s team cleaned up all the messes. The whole concept was so interesting to me because she is truly a morally gray character.

Ben Specter is unlike any character I’ve written before. Most of my guys have a certain swagger and charisma, but Ben intentionally uses his to his advantage. His job requires gathering information. Information most don’t want uncovered. Hence the morally grayness of it all. He works for an Olivia Pope type, Ellen Ziff, headquartered in Sacramento, the capitol of California. Ben lives and works out of San Francisco though and his newest case falls right across the Bay in Berkeley.

Ben tricks Lauren as he delves deep into her life, looking for any secrets that may compromise his candidate, but along the way, there’s something about Lauren that pushes Ben to do some introspection. To examine his own life, his own secrets, and adjust his moral compass.

So in the end, I kept close to the nature of what I like in a hero, but I had so much fun with Ben on his journey getting there. I hope you enjoy his arc.

THE COWBOY’S WORD – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Sinclair Jayne! (Plus a Giveaway!)

I can’t even tell all of you how happy I am to be back in Marietta, Montana writing cowboy stories for Tule. This series—The Coyote Cowboys of Montana—has, in my opinion, it ALL. My favorite hooks—cowboys, ex-military, jilted bride/substitute groom, prodigal son, barrel racer, doctor. My top tropes—reunion romance, secret baby, marriage of convenience, secret illegitimate son and the themes I adore exploring—redemption, re-invention, forgiveness. I have a rodeo cowboy, a jilted, expecting bride, A secret son finding his family, a Christmas homecoming and even a romance with a hint of mystery and long buried secrets (literally).

I’ve been thinking about this series, Coyote Cowboys of Montana, for a few years. I was playing with the idea of leaving home at eighteen, reinventing your life and building a successful career and then returning home again as a mature adult to fulfill a childhood dream/wish/fantasy. I wanted to explore the challenges my characters would face after stepping far outside their box and then trying to step back in. Would they fit? Do they want to? How can they bust out? And while I definitely wanted my heroes to be cowboys, I also wanted them to have been forced to leave the land they loved, become something else before returning to their ranch roots.

As my premise, I made all five heroes teammates in Special Forces. Over the course of a year, each of them travels to Marietta, Montana as part of a vow they made to their fallen team leader, Jace McBride and to each other. Each of them has a task or an “amend’ that they will carry out in Jace’s honor.

While I love cowboys, the military piece was important to honor. I’ve had several family members serve in the armed forces—both Navy and Army, and while I have had one ex-soldier as a hero (Seducing the Bachelor), I never had a series centered around former soldiers. I wanted to explore these two iconic romance hero archetypes and I hope that you fall in love them as much as I did.

First up Remy Cross in The Cowboy’s Word. I created Remy especially for Shane Knight, a character I wrote in two early books that were part of a multi-author series featuring the Graff Hotel through the Holidays. Shane Knight is one of five sisters (three of them have their own love stories) and a bartender at the Graff Hotel (and former army psychologist with a painful secret). I have been wanting to write a love story for years, but the timing never felt right. Enter tall, dark, and determined Remy reluctantly back home in Marietta. He’s her perfect match. Remy’s task is to be a god father to the child of Jace’s best friend from high school. It seems easy enough, but of course his plan skews immediately into the late summer weeds. While Shane wants to remain emotionally safe, she’s sucked into riding rescue.

A BOOKISH HEROINE TO FALL FOR

There are few things I love more about a beautifully flawed, fun-loving, smart, and strong heroine. But give me one with a hankering for romance books, and I’m sold.

I instantly relate to bookish characters.

Not the ones who flush with embarrassment as they slyly slip it in their purse or hide the artfully heaving bosoms behind book jackets, either. I’m especially drawn to the ones who unabashedly read their favorite genre out in the open. The ones who equally appreciate the value of words and stories and a cover that boldly gives a glimpse of what’s between the pages.

To them, books are their treasures, more precious than gems and stones.

When I began writing Trivialized Pursuit, I didn’t plan on Roxanne “Rox” Sloane slipping into the bookish role. As her character became more three-dimensional, though, certain qualities stepped out into the forefront. For example, she’s adventure-seeking, always slipping in a chapter between customers, and has an insatiable hunger for knowledge only quenchable by books.

She’s also a list-maker. In fact, she’s got a Book of Lists. One of which, is her “One-Shot at Love” list. Immediately, my mind went for the hopeful romantic.

Of course, Rox loves romance novels. She’s smart, her shelves are heaped with books, and she celebrates how love helps us grow. A few hours of reading gifts her with a guaranteed HEA (Happily Ever After) despite all the stakes raised against the heroine and the hero. It’s the whole life and art imitating each other thing.

As it turns out, along with lists, Rox is numbers and logic. She notices patterns. With her dad on his fourth set of nuptials and her mom never remarrying, the unfavorable odds of finding her rakish needle in a haystack aren’t lost on her. Add in a Dr. Murphy Theodore Sikes—ridiculously handsome, commitment-phobe, player extraordinaire—who she’s been crushing on for the past decade…

And he’s even hotter in scrubs with his ruggedly messy hair, sweetly dropping by with takeout because he knew she’d be tired after work?

And he calls her sparky, too?

Yeah, Roxanne Sloane keeps a bighearted, laugh-out-loud rom-com on standby. Depending on her mood, she’s no stranger to an angsty, sweeping historical in her purse, either.

For emergencies.

Dating how-to books and romance novels are Rox’s go-to grabs for anxiety. In this flirty, friends-to-lovers, trivia-themed romantic comedy, she has a book in her hand by chapter three. It’s bright yellow with hot pink script on the cover, and filled with all the emotions, laughs, and steam she craves. It’s described as a bestselling enemies-to-lovers contemporary workplace romance novel about two coworkers who go on a strategic reality competition series where the players must choose whether to be themselves or other people all while chasing a cash prize.

It just screams romantic comedy!

Sold!!!

I’m a sucker for books within a book. Give me a beach to go with it? Yes, please!

In this case, one of my favorite scenes is the beach scene. My heart about gave out when Murph joined Rox in the sun-soaked Mission Beach sand and didn’t lecture her about reading romance novels. Instead, he slid alongside her, intertwined their fingers, and listened while she read to him. When I say, my heart…

“By the time we crawl back onto our sandy towels, a new quiet energy settles between us. Rox reads from her book aloud to me, and as the characters fight the urge to be together, my ache to touch Rox escalates to combustible desperation. I inch my hand across the invisible barrier between our towels, and our fingers touch in the sand. When she slips her hand in mine without missing a beat, I know without a doubt Mom is right.”

Yes, Murph, Mom is usually right LOL. In case he didn’t notice, his mom usually has a book in her hands as well.

A MATCH MADE IN MONTANA – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Elsa Winckler

If you’re a die hard romantic like me, you probably also love romantic comedies – whether it’s a book, a play or a movie. The laugh-out-loud ones but also the laugh-with-a-tear ones. I haven’t set out to write Annie’s and Craig’s story as a comedy, it just ended up that way. The basic plot for a romantic comedy, Google tells me is 1. Meet 2. Lose and 3. Get.

I love writing the meet-cute moment but because A Match Made in Montana is the second story in the Millers of Marietta series, Annie and Craig have already met so I had to find a way to have them “meet” in a cute way again – hence the first scene in the book where Annie is lying in a hammock and reading a very vivid description of a heroine’s bodily reaction to the hero in the story!

Maybe it’s also because they have both been hurt before and are struggling to leave the past behind that I instinctively added more funny moments than what I usually do. The chances that they can have their happily ever after are slim, there are so many obstacles, but as we’ve come to realize by now, the magic of Marietta and Copper Mountain has a way of bringing lost souls together.

I’ve been writing romance since 2008 and I’ve discovered some characters are harder to forget than others. Annie Miller, the heroine in A Match Made in Montana is one of those characters that seems to be stuck in my mind. Maybe because she’s so different from most of the other feisty and more forceful heroines I’ve written. In contrast to most of her friends and her sister, Viv, Annie is a homebody. She’s a natural caretaker and nurturer. Nothing gives her more pleasure than to feed people and to see them enjoy the food she’s made – the reason why her fiancé dumped her weeks before their wedding. According to him, she’s not enough of a go-getter.

The Irishman, as her brother Mitch calls Craig, has been in her mind since he’s hugged her goodbye during his first visit to Marietta. Now he’s back for his cousin Aiden’s and sister Vivian’s wedding and it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to ignore the obvious spark between them.

The more time she spends with the big red head, the more she likes him, but Annie is still bruised and unsure of herself. Why would a hot-shot marketing guru from Portland be interested in her?

Finding a happy-ever-after for Annie and Craig has been a challenge, there are so many obstacles in their way, but as we romance lovers know by now, never underestimate the magic of love. It will find a way.

I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my Honours studies, I was hooked for life.

They are of course, also gorgeous!  My stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.

ROOM FOR SUSPICION – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Carol Light

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? As human beings we’re naturally curious and want to know what happened, when it happened, who did it, and why. In crime fiction, we refer to the three M’s: motive (why), means (how), and moment (opportunity, or when). Putting the pieces
together to reveal the whole picture and solve the crime can be very satisfying (especially if you guess whodunnit!). So is the sense of justice when the culprit is caught. Order is restored.

My main character in Room for Suspicion, the first of my Cluttered Crime Mysteries, loves creating order out of chaos. Crystal (Crys) Ward is a professional organizer, which means she helps people declutter their spaces, whether it’s a basement, garage, entire house, or office.
Clearing a drawer, closet, or room and then organizing it to meet her client’s current needs is more satisfying to Crys than a cheese Danish from Milow’s Bakery. As with a good mystery, order is restored when she’s finished, allowing her clients’ lives to move forward.

I’ve always been drawn to self-help books and love organizing hacks. When I was thinking of a career for Crys, I knew I had to choose a profession that would bring her into people’s homes and even allow her to uncover their secrets. Sometimes just seeing how people live tells a lot about them. In this novel, Crys’s client Farrah is a neat person with minimal clutter who just wants professional help reorganizing her home office for greater efficiency. She’s expecting a promotion and preparing to move forward in her career. That’s all great, but doesn’t the lack of
mementos, photos, and other personal items also say something about this character? Maybe she’s all business—a workaholic with no hobbies or social life. Then again, she might just be a minimalist who believes less is more. But what if she’s put her past behind her and doesn’t
want reminders of the not-so-good old days? Her office may also offer to clues to her personality (unsentimental, no nonsense) by what’s NOT there as well as what is. As a writer, I have to consider what message or mood my setting will communicate to the reader. It’s another piece of the puzzle.

Now you might assume that Crys would be super organized at home, with uncluttered rooms and drawers that look like Marie Kondo just paid a visit. Alas, that’s not the case. Did I mention that Crys has two children, ages twelve and fourteen? Or that she lives in an older bungalow in
Chicago that had to be modified five years ago to accommodate her husband’s wheelchair and special needs? Or that the parlor they converted into their new master bedroom doesn’t have a closet? Crys does the best she can. Her secret failure to practice what she preaches is an unexpected twist that makes her human and hopefully more relatable. She’s not perfect, but she is ambitious. As soon as she can afford more renovations, she’ll fix her home’s problems and restore order. Unfortunately, discovering a dead man at Farrah’s house may end her career, especially if her client is arrested for murder.

Writing a mystery is like putting a 5000-piece jigsaw together, or piecing a quilt, which I also enjoy doing. I have to make sure all of the clues, red herrings, and suspects appear when they need to but not too soon. I have to have multiple characters who could have committed the crime. The three M’s apply to suspects as well as the killer. Perhaps they were at or near the murder scene when it happened. Or maybe they had compelling reasons to harm the deceased. They could have had access to the cause of death—the smoking gun, a deadly poison, or the nylon stocking used to strangle the victim. Nothing can be too obvious, or a dead giveaway (no pun intended). Few people have nylon stockings these days, so it would be too obvious for the eighty-year-old former Rockette with a drawer full of nylons from the 1960s to have done it.
She had to have been framed! Yes, there are always twists in a good mystery, too. I won’t make it easy for you, but I promise the pieces (or clues) will finally fit together providing you with the full picture.
