The End of the Ride

Writing this series was a challenge, a joy, and at times a nail-biter for me too. I wanted every book to deliver both romance and suspense, but I also wanted the mystery to stretch across all five, building to a finale that would feel satisfying.

The women of Grit and Grace Rodeo Roughstock Company have proven that love, as always, is worth the risk.

Excerpt:

After taking his place next to Asher in the center of the living room that was as large and opulent as the rest of the A Bar H ranch, Dillon did his best to school his face into a pleasantly neutral expression. He hadn’t been kidding when he’d commented to the mahogany-haired beauty that it was quite the crowd gathered before him. 

Seeing the list of names Asher had sent him on a computer screen didn’t quite carry the impact as the collection of actual bodies did. It was a lot of people to research, both online and through face-to-face interviews, but that was why he was being paid the big bucks. Regardless of Asher’s claim that everyone here was trustworthy, Dillon fully intended to draw his own conclusions. 

Plus, it was the simplest way to identify possible motivators for outside bad actors to commit the acts Noah had detailed over the phone when asking for Dillon’s help. Asher had also forwarded him the anonymous letter that had been sent to the investors Grit and Grace had secured, which had led to at least one of them withdrawing their financial support. The stakes were steadily getting higher.

Dillon acknowledged Asher’s introduction with a polite nod of his head. “Thank you, Mr. Halliday.”

Noah fake-coughed into his fist while saying, “Kiss-ass.”

Man, he’d missed the guy. A small smile pulled at the corners of Dillon’s mouth, but otherwise, he did his best to pretend not to have heard his former teammate. “As Noah’s clearly more intelligent older brother said, I’m a PI out of the Big Easy, and I’ve been brought in to look more closely at the incidents, as Asher so politely characterized them, that have been occurring here at the A Bar H and in Last Stand.”

Questions and conversation erupted from the group in front of him. 

Though the temptation was great, he resisted the urge to slide his gaze to the woman standing in the doorway to his right, despite swearing he’d heard a soft gasp come from her. He already knew in his bones she was going to be a distraction to him. Best to shut it down now.

Dillon pushed his hands into the front pockets of his tactical pants as he ran his gaze over the people seated on the couches, waiting for them to get the initial reaction out of their systems. The women of Grit and Grace were all stunning, and their men were decidedly possessive looking. 

A pretty honey-blonde seated on the couch directly in front of him asked Asher, “Do you think we’re in danger?”

The man seated next to her put a comforting hand on her knee. “I won’t let anything happen to Lily. Or you.” 

According to the list of the inhabitants of the A Bar H Asher had sent him, Dillon knew Lily was the baby’s name, so the woman must be Sammie Neisson, being comforted by her new husband, Alec Neisson. 

The petite platinum blonde on Sammie’s other side said to her, “Noah will never let anyone hurt us, Sammie.” 

So, that must be Emma. Dillon shifted his gaze to Noah, raising his brows in a silent inquiry. Noah’s shit-eating grin and slight, So, I’m lucky as hell shrug was confirmation enough.

Dillon gave him an Atta boy dip of his chin. Again, he had to fight the urge to glance toward the doorway, where a very different sort of woman stood. One who brought to mind fire and earth. 

Finally, Asher stepped forward, his hands raised. “Settle down, everyone. Let the man speak.” 

Once quiet was restored, Asher turned to Dillon and gestured for him to continue.

Dillon returned to his spiel. “I’m here because there is nothing polite about a screwdriver jammed into the ranch truck’s gas tank. Or the fireworks that could have caused harm as well as mayhem during the Last Stand Fourth of July Rodeo Parade. Or the oil rag fire set against the equipment barn during your Christmas Open House. Not to mention the cut barbed wire fence in the bred longhorns’ pasture. And there was definitely nothing polite about the anonymous letters disparaging the women of Grit and Grace that were sent to your investors.

“While I’ll begin my investigation with the last incident by tracing the IP address the letter was sent from, I will need to interview each of you to learn as much as I can to also help me get to the root of your problem.” 

Dillon finally allowed his gaze to slip to Meira and promptly wished he hadn’t. The color that had previously been riding high on her cheeks had leached away, leaving her pale. And the suspicion that sparked in her eyes had been replaced with something he’d seen far too many times before in his previous career. Fear. 

Now what would a PhD genetic researcher turned bronc rider turned roughstock contractor trained in Krav Maga be afraid of? Did she think her past had come back to haunt her?

She’d been the first name on Asher’s list that he’d looked up on the internet this morning, but all he’d been able to find was her impressive academic achievements and a hire date at some lab. So, he found an employee list and started making phone calls. 

He’d been hung up on the minute he’d mentioned Meira’s name until he got lucky and connected with a woman in HR who was retiring and apparently had no shits to give or secrets to keep. What he’d learned had placed Meira in a much different light for him. 

Meira had been sexually harassed by some of her fellow researchers, and when she’d complained, as she rightly should have, she had been the one to lose her career. The woman in HR felt strongly that Meira had been shafted, and that she should have filed a lawsuit, but apparently, her parents had discouraged it. What kind of parents did that?

Yet Meira obviously hadn’t let what had happened defeat her. Little wonder why she’d learned self-defense. 

In a blink of an eye, he saw the fear replaced by a look of wariness he was also very familiar with in his present career. Clearly, what she’d gone through had left a mark. 

Had the mark taken the form of undeserved shame?

Distraction or not, Dillon knew his first interview would be with one Dr. Meira Ware.

Dogs and horses…

Throw in a baby cow and I’m yours. Seriously. Nothing in this world makes me happier (sorry kids).

Growing up, my time was gladly spent with my spirited quarter horse mare and the black angus calves who shared her pasture. We won’t talk about why the calves had been purchased, but I will admit to being responsible for them not fattening up the way they should have and needing longer before going to market. Nothing like a girl and her born and bred cutting horse to keep cattle trim and fit.

While my current life only includes one of the above loves, a golden retriever who rules my world, I do my best to keep my writing life brimming with dogs, horses, baby cows, and of course, cowboys. 

I went all in with the third book in my Grit and Grace series. There is a stray dog needing to be rescued by Beth Dawson, the caretaker of the Grit and Grace bunch, a newborn calf to protect, trustworthy horses, and a very hot but a little grumpy cowboy to make the night under the vast Texas Hill Country sky more interesting…

Panic rising in her throat, Beth was already climbing out of the truck. She shut the door on Sammie’s protest and started down the knoll as fast as she dared, a hand planted on her black cowboy hat. Her work-worn cowboy boots skidded in the loose, rocky soil and she had to watch out for grassy clumps that would send her tumbling head over teakettle. 

As much as she loved her Grit and Grace partners, she loved the animals who also called this huge ranch home a smidge more. It was just how she was wired. Whether they were rodeo rough stock owned outright by her and her friends or the saddle horses and longhorns they leased from Asher Halliday, the billion-dollar oil dynasty heir who owned the ranch, Beth loved them equally. If one of the heifers was sick or in distress of some kind, it didn’t deserve to simply be shot. There had to be an alternative. 

There had to be some way she could help the animal.

Her heart already pounding, Beth broke into a run the second she hit relatively flat ground. As she closed the distance between them, uncaring where her booted feet landed now, she could see Justin unzipping the case and removing a long barrel, scoped rifle.

Despite the exertion, her blood turned cold and her feet felt as if they were encased in concrete.

Justin leaned forward and drew a red ammunition box toward him. Beth was still fifty yards away from him when he opened the box and began sliding long, pointed bullets into the gun’s chamber, the morning sun glinting off the brass of each one.

“Justin!” Beth yelled, but the crisp January breeze blew her voice right back at her.

Another bullet went into the chamber.

“Justin!” she tried again.

He turned his head toward her, his face obscured by the brim of his dark-brown cowboy hat and the upturned collar of his shearling-lined jean jacket.

His body tensed. “What’s wrong?” he called back to her.

That’s what she wanted to know, but she continued running toward him.

She could see him look up toward the knoll where the ranch truck was parked, then back at her as she neared him. “What is it?” he asked, worry clear in his voice. “Is it Sammie?” He pointed toward the knoll. “The baby?” Everyone on the A Bar H had taken a vested interest in the welfare of Sammie and Alec’s baby. The kid was going to be drowned in love. 

Beth slowed to a trot and glanced over her shoulder long enough to see that Sammie had climbed back out of the truck and was watching them with one hand braced on the truck’s door and the other on her undoubtedly aching low back.

When Beth reached where Justin stood at the open tailgate of his truck, she said, “It’s not that. Sammie and the baby are fine.” She paused to catch her breath while Justin expressed his worry by glowering at her. She ignored him and demanded, “Why are you loading a gun? Is something wrong with one of the bred heifers?”

His rigid posture relaxed and he went back to loading the last of the five rounds into the rifle. “They’re fine. At the moment. This isn’t for any of them,” he said, indicating the rifle. 

Beth planted her hands on her hips. “Then for what?”

“Something’s been harassing them. When I came out at first light to see if any of them had calved, I found them bunched against the fence, breathing hard and lathered, as if something had been chasing them.”

“Like what?”

Justin gestured with a tilt of his head for her to follow him. He shouldered the rifle by its strap and led Beth around the back of the truck toward a patch of dirt still holding on to moisture from the last rainfall. 

He dropped to one knee and pointed at a distinct animal track left in the mud.

Beth squatted next to him to better see the print. Though slightly smaller than her palm, the paw print had distinct pads and definite claws. “That looks canine. Coyote?”

Justin pulled in a breath, then shook his head. “Too big, I think. And the ground isn’t that soft, so whatever it was, is carrying some weight. Since there aren’t any wolves left in Texas, it’s probably a largish feral dog.”

Horror shot through Beth. “A dog? You’re going to shoot a dog?”

Justin settled his hazel eyes on her. “A feral dog, Beth. They can be just as dangerous as any predator. Especially around newborn calves.”

Beth’s brain understood Justin’s logic. Agreed with it, even. But her heart rebelled with a rending intensity. “A feral dog can be tamed. You don’t have to kill it, Justin.”

The normal warm-caramel color of his eyes turned to stone-hard amber. “You think I want to kill a dog? Or whatever might have left that print?”

Beth held his gaze. Despite having lived on the A Bar H for roughly seven months and seeing Justin nearly every day while he efficiently filled his role of ranch manager and she helped tend to and train the rodeo rough stock owned outright or leased by Grit and Grace, Beth didn’t really know Justin. 

She said flatly, “I have no idea what you want, Justin.”

That single phrase, uttered by my dear editor, Sinclair Sawhney, was the seed from which grew my new Tule series, Grit and Grace. Admittedly, an Aperol Spritzer might have fueled some of my inspiration on that lovely day last summer, but the rest was pure magic.

Peyton Halliday, my heroine in The Cowboy Doctor, the last book of my previous series, Rodeo Romeos, sort of kicked things off by introducing us to her friends. Sammie Abel, Emma Barrett, Beth Dawson, Laura Senske, and Meira Ware along with Peyton all bonded while riding ranch saddle broncs competitively and being filmed for a made-up reality TV show called Buckin’ Babes.

But the friends were destined for something more. They left the world of reality TV and competitive bronc riding behind to take a crack at rodeo rough stock contracting, specializing in, you guessed it, bucking broncs. Thanks to Peyton’s wealthy family, specifically her oldest brother, the newly formed Grit and Grace Rodeo Roughstock Company find a home on a ranch outside of Last Stand, Texas, to raise and train the animals used in professional rodeos.

All’s Fair in Love and Rodeo is Sammie Abel and Alec Neisson’s story, where they see if they can come together while going after the same rodeo rough stock contract. And more than just success in the rodeo world is at stake…

Sammie waited until the group was well past them before turning to him. “Alec! Seriously, what are you doing here?” she hissed.

“Why haven’t you answered my calls or texts?”

“Stalker much?”

“Come on, Sammie. You didn’t even say goodbye. Did I do something?”

She met his gaze. “Yes.”

Alec softened his tone. “So you freaked out and ghosted me.”

“Yes. I’m sorry. I freaked out a little and just left. But now . . . I have been meaning to call you. Really.”

“Because?”

The blue of her eyes swam beneath the sheen of tears. “Because I’m pregnant, Alec.”

Having never met an unhappy ending she couldn’t mentally “fix,” Leah Vale believes writing romance novels is the perfect job for her. A Pacific Northwest native with a B.A. in Communications from the University of Washington, she lives in Central Oregon, with a huge golden retriever who thinks he’s a lap dog. While having the chance to share her “happy endings from scratch” is a dream come true, dinner generally has to come premade from the store.
