ingle mom Rebecca Dorchester swore she’d never chase another bad decision—until she packs up her daughter and her sentimental father for a risky reunion with the biological mother and half-sisters she never knew in Marietta, Montana. She definitely doesn’t need the complication of a rugged, heart-stopping cowboy who catches her little girl mid-tumble on day one. But one smoldering look from Harrison Drake, and Rebecca’s carefully guarded heart starts to thaw.

Harrison Drake’s ranch is his entire legacy—land, cattle, and the family name he’s always expected to pass down. Lately, though, the empty spaces in his life have been louder than the Montana wind. When he meets Rebecca and her daughter, he knows exactly what he’s been missing: a woman to love, a family to build.

With old wounds, family drama, and hard-won trust on the line, can Rebecca risk her heart again—and can Harrison prove that this time, love isn’t just another complication?

It was supposed to be a favor. It was never supposed to feel real.

When the Colorado ranch Finn Patrick expected to inherit is sold, he follows his sister to Cowboy Point to meet the half-siblings they never knew existed. Time to figure out what comes next.

Kitty Bennett isn’t part of the plan. Sharp-tongued, wary-eyed, and fiercely protective of her family’s beloved Mountain Mama pizza shop, Kitty has no time for distractions. Especially volcanically hot ones.

But when her otherwise wonderful landlord makes it clear Kitty needs a husband if she wants to buy the restaurant at last, Finn is the obvious choice—because nothing about his stay in Montana is permanent. They can fake the whole thing. She’s confident she and Finn are on the same page, and the plan will go smoothly.

The only problem?

Finn has wanted Kitty in every possible way. He’s wanted her since he first laid eyes on her. And he knows exactly what he tastes when he kisses her—forever. Now he needs to convince her that there’s nothing fake about them, after all.

An alpha with a storied legacy. An independent woman rebuilding after grief. Forbidden desire—for only one is human….

After her mother’s death, photographer Erica Barrett, buys a home she and her mother obsessed over during her childhood in the quaintly historical town of Tolstone. Her magnetic next door neighbor intrigues and disturbs her. The sensual pull feels otherworldly.

Wolf shifter Dominic Beaumont never wanted to be the prime alpha of the sanctuary city, Tolstone, but when his father dies, he’s forced to step up as pack leader and prime alpha over all the wolf packs sheltering in his town. Erica’s arrival is dangerous. The attraction is fierce and instant, but duty comes first.

When revelations about Erica’s past and parentage create chaos, and she questions everything she thought she knew about herself, Dominic is her strength. But as tension builds in the pack, and his leadership is challenged, love becomes a risk that could cost him his authority, his people, and everything he’s sworn to protect.

An undercover Texas Ranger, An IT specialist under pressure. An impossible choice.

Former soldier and by-the-book Texas Ranger Colton Adams is ready to come clean. After months undercover at Restoration Ranch, he’s finally earned a shot at redemption—and the chance to tell sexy, guarded IT specialist Seneca Daniels the truth about who he really is. But before he can beg forgiveness for the lies he told to protect her, danger bursts back into their world. His mission isn’t over—and now the target is Seneca.

Ex-con Seneca Daniels came to Restoration Ranch to rebuild her life, not fall for a man with secrets. Betrayed before, she swore never to risk her heart—or her freedom—again. But when her past returns in the form of the man who once tormented her, she’s trapped between two threats: the one who broke her and the one who lied to save her.

As risks escalate and passions flare, Colton puts it all on the line to keep her safe. But Seneca’s no one’s damsel—especially when she just might be the deadliest threat of all.

Vanessa Nava returns to her Texas hometown as a newly divorced single mom, determined to give her imaginative four-year-old daughter a magical summer. But the serene lakeside cabin she rented? Double-booked. The current occupant is the hottest, grumpiest handyman she’s ever met—claiming it’s under construction and strictly off-limits.

Paul McPherson, a Houston native recovering from a gunshot wound, has retreated to Lost Lake to hide and heal in peace. He won’t share his safe haven with anyone—especially not the sheriff’s daughter and her bubbly little girl. Vanessa is stunning, stubborn, and way too tempting for a man with secrets.

Vanessa paid upfront and refuses to leave. She sets up camp on his doorstep, transforming mishap into lake days filled with laughter, lemonade stands, and hot summer nights—sending Paul’s buried protective instincts into overdrive.

Going home shouldn’t be this hard…

Cassidy Lambert has worked hard to build a professional career in Great Falls, far from her domineering mother and the expectations of Coffee Creek Ranch. She swore she’d never come back for good. But when a dangerous equine disease threatens the family horses—and the ranch’s future—Cassidy has no choice but to return home.

Working side by side with rugged veterinarian Dan Farley is the last complication she needs. Their first date years ago ended in disaster, and Dan hasn’t forgotten it. Now forced into close quarters as they fight to save the ranch, old wounds resurface—and so does undeniable chemistry.

Dan once vowed to guard his heart against Cassidy’s sharp edges and city ambitions. Yet beneath her independence, he sees the compassionate woman who loves this land as fiercely as he does.

As the crisis deepens and small-town ties pull tight, Cassidy must choose: the life she built in the city… or the cowboy vet who feels like home.

The more uncomfortable, the more out of his comfort zone he is, the better.

In Forbidden to the Texas Soldier a portion of the conflict between Dash Lange and Lainey Gallagher arises from the bro code. As I delved into the topic, I discovered many men and women held contradictory views. Kind of a Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus thing, if you’re old enough to remember that book.

Maybe the fact that a lot of men subscribed to the bro code failed to surprise me is because growing up with only one female cousin a distance away, I often played baseball or football, went canoeing or fishing with my dad, brother, uncles and male cousins. Probably for reason, too, discovering a lot of women believe the concept is ridiculous threw me. However, as I read blogs and posts both sides made sense to me.

But what if I didn’t get the male point of view, and I was attracted to my brother’s friend? (A completely what if scenario since my brother is three years younger.) That got my mind churning, and I turned to Dash and Lainey. I soon realized Lainey could drive my already tortured widower-survived-terrorist-bombing hero Dash crazy with that juxtaposition.

When Lainey’s deployed brother asks Dash to check on his family, they somewhat jokingly discuss the bro code with Dash insisting he’s not interested in dating anyone. Then his friend says, “So, if you meet her, no offense, pal, but don’t get any ideas. LJ needs a man who’s not fighting demons and can take care of her.”

Being a man who takes a promise seriously, though he’s attracted to Lainey, when they meet Dash informs her there can be nothing but friendship between them. He even explains his reasoning. Her brother could feel betrayed, especially by him since he agreed Lainey was off limits. Dash continues, claiming it’s tough to balance both relationships without someone feeling slighted and the guy being forced to take sides between siblings. Lastly, he says when dating a friend’s sister, he can’t confide any dating woes in his friend. Lainey tells him she thinks it’s a crock and asserts who she dates isn’t her brother’s decision. Then she vows to get Dash to throw the bro code out the window. She purposely pushes his buttons, stretching Dash’s self his self-control as tight as a woman who’s had too many facelifts. But bless his Texas cowboy heart and honor, Dash tries his best to keep his vow and his hold onto his virtue.

What’re your thoughts on the bro code? Have you ever had to deal with it because you had a crush on a brother’s friend? I’d love to hear your views and stories.

Dash and Lainey took me on an interesting ride while writing Forbidden to the Texas Soldier. I hope you enjoy their adventure, too.

An avid daydreamer, Julie Benson doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t creating stories. After graduating from the University of Texas at Dallas with a degree in Sociology, she worked as case manager for a social services agency before having her children. Three boys, and many years later, she started actively pursuing a writing career to challenge her mind and save her sanity. Now she writes full time in Dallas, where she lives with her husband, their three sons, two lovable black dogs, a mischievous brown one and a turtle. Julie says, while her house is never quiet or predictable, it is full of heroes.

Magic, betrayal, and a forbidden love that could spark a war…

Layla Lenhardt never thought her entire life would implode, leaving her one person she could depend on, a magical hacker from the rough side of the city. Three months ago, she hired Livingston Security Firm to help find a missing woman. Their technomancer, Brock Hanes, fell instantly. Layla barely noticed—until danger forced them back together.

Layla is a privileged mortal working for her family’s powerful corporation, Lenhardt Creations. Brock has a bounty on his head from the Governor for using illegal magic to solve crimes. They come from opposite worlds with nothing in common but the risks they’re willing to take to go against the Governor.

Members of the magical community are disappearing in droves and it’s hard not to assume that this is the Governor’s response to the Black Bird Coven’s attack on his mansion. But when Layla uncovers proof that Lenhardt Creations is secretly backing the Governor’s violent retribution, she refuses to stay silent. Layla turns to Brock to expose the conspiracy, protect his people, and help her right her family’s wrongs. But secrets, fear, and divided loyalties threaten to tear them apart.

Because in a city where magic is a crime and love is a liability, choosing each other may be the most dangerous act of all.

A Champion bull rider in need of a reputation salvage. The ambitious intern who excels at spin. A forced exile and an unexpected baby. What else could go wrong?

At the end of the American Extreme Bull Rider tour, fan favorite Cash Hunter again sits at the top of the leaderboard. Standing in the winner’s circle opining about his chances in the finals, a woman he’s never seen runs toward him cursing before shoving a baby into his arms and disappearing. Suddenly the golden boy’s tarnished.

Madelyn Ramone always prepares for success and disaster. While tour execs panic, Maddy steps up with her redemption plan. Publicly embrace fatherhood. Go home. Lay low. Document daddy moments. Take a DNA test. Accompanying him wasn’t part of her plan. She’s going to need her own Kevlar vest to resist his potent sexual pull.

Cash is furious. No one believes the child isn’t his, especially the coolly judgmental Maddy. But he needs her. And she’s gunning for the opportunity. Neither wants to buckle up and head to the small Montana town that holds unpleasant associations and memories for them both.

In a shattered post-apocalyptic world, only scattered pockets of humanity endure. From the ruins rise Darwin changelings, beings not born of humans, fighting to reclaim what was long ago lost.
Leader of the feared Pen Dragons, Logan hunts the Firestone, a relic powerful enough to shatter the fragile peace that remains. He needs Beyla’s forbidden knowledge to find it. When she steals his treasure and, by dragon law, becomes his unwilling mate, enemies are bound by fate and fire.

I’m back to celebrate Sheriff’s Honor, the second book in my contemporary/Western romance series. This story features a recurring character named Deputy Sheriff Wade Hendricks. In Cowboy’s Last Stand, Wade is a rival for the heroine’s affections and a foil for the hero. He’s also the former best friend of Natalie’s husband, Mike, who died in combat. Although Wade and Natalie shared a night together, it was more of a flop than a love connection.

In Sheriff’s Honor, Wade has relocated to a new town and moved on. When he meets Meredith, he realizes his feelings for Natalie were never that strong. At one point he tells Meredith about their ill-fated encounter:

“I went over to Natalie’s house on Mike’s birthday,” Wade said. “I brought a bottle of his favorite tequila. We planned to hang out and reminisce. It was emotional, and we both drank too much. One thing led to another and we ended up in bed.”
“Did you fall in love with her before that, or after?”
“After.”
“Because it was so amazing?”
“No.” He winced at the memory. “It was awkward, actually. She called me Mike in the middle of it.”
Meredith sat up straighter. “What did you do?”
“I choked,” he said, shaking his head. “I hurried up and finished, and I left.”
“You finished?”
“What was I supposed to do? Not finish?”
“Did she enjoy it?”
“She did not.”
“She said that?”
“She didn’t have to. I could tell.”
Meredith clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide. “That’s terrible.”
He smiled wryly. “It was a huge blow to my ego.”

Things didn’t work out for Wade in Cowboy’s Last Stand. Luckily, he’s getting a chance for his own HEA in Sheriff’s Honor. He finds redemption and solace in Lost Lake, Texas with a
spunky ranch hand who captivates him completely.

You don’t have to read Cowboy’s Last Stand to enjoy Sheriff’s Honor, but I think it makes
Wade’s story more satisfying. Either way, I’m happy to (re)introduce a true hero with flaws and missteps who finally meets his match and gets it right.

About Sheriff’s Honor

She’s hiding from a past that could destroy her. He’s sworn to uncover the truth—no matter
what the cost.

Meredith Rose never meant to point a shotgun at the new deputy sheriff. But when Wade
Hendricks strides onto the Lost Lake ranch to visit his mother, all Texas heat and authority, her fight-or-flight instincts kick in. The honorable lawman makes her heart race for all the wrong reasons. Wade came home to bury ghosts, not dig up new ones. Yet the wary beauty his mother hired as a caretaker unearths feelings he’d rather keep hidden. The air sizzles every time they meet, but Wade knows better than to fall for a woman who lies to his face. When a cold case hits too close to home, Meredith becomes an unlikely ally–and a temptation he can’t resist.

In a small Texas town where secrets won’t stay buried, the forbidden fire between them threatens to ignite a blaze of cowboy justice.

Chocolate is better than men, and so are dogs. At least, that’s what Dakota Parker tells herself as she mends her broken heart and finds forever homes for rescue animals. So far, so good. She can indulge her love of chocolate where she works while her foster dogs provide her with the unconditional love she craves. What more does she need?

Seattle architect Bryce Grayson is counting the days until he can return home to the big city with his father in tow. That is if he can convince his dad to leave Montana. Bryce’s escape plan, however, goes astray when he meets Dakota. Her sweet kisses put the chocolate she sells to shame. Maybe he should be the one to move to Marietta, but could he be happy living in such a small town?

He has until Thanksgiving to decide.

Can a fun-filled activity list from the past help to create a new future?

Art teacher Harley Welsh is charmed by her newest student—a little girl whose shyness disappears the second her hands are covered in clay or paint. Moving wasn’t easy for Nadia so to help her, Harley resurrects the countdown to the Great Pumpkin Patch—a must-do fall activity list from her childhood. She’s determined to show Nadia and her family how wonderful life in Crossvine Creek is. But Harley didn’t plan for Nadia’s father to be single, distractingly handsome and everything she’s running from.

New high school football coach Josh McBride is hoping a smaller town will give him more time to focus on his children. While his son is adjusting to the move, his daughter is struggling. Harley’s offer to help via a fun, seasonal-themed activity list is a welcome gift. Her love for the town is infectious, and soon his kids aren’t the only ones falling under her spell.

But Josh can’t help but wonder…what happens when they reach the end of the list?

He thought he had the perfect plan…

When elite university professor Keaton Andrews walks into a meeting with the dean, he expects to hear that his tenure application is on track. Instead, his beloved department is cut. Regrouping in Silver Falls with family seems like his best option. One morning, he takes a risk and orders a pumpkin spice latte from the beautiful barista at the local coffee shop. Too bad she doesn’t seem to find him nearly as intriguing as he finds her…

Raine Hanover is no longer swayed by a charming smile, especially by a nerdy—and distractingly handsome—academic. She’s taking a break from romance and focusing on running her increasingly busy coffee shop. But when Raine is involuntarily put in charge of organizing the town’s Halloween bash, Keaton jumps in to help, and it’s not long before sparks, and kisses, fly.

As the leaves begin to fall, Raine wonders if she should risk taking another chance on happily ever after, especially with a man who has dreams and goals so far away from Silver Falls and her.

Can one choice alter destiny or is fate set in stone?

After her father’s disappearance, headstrong healer Rhianwyn finds herself in a perilous position. The king’s law forbids unwed women living alone, but she neither needs nor wants the numerous men vying for her hand. The explosive chemistry between her and mysterious Lord Broccan tempts her to bed—but not to wed. So, when Broccan receives royal permission to marry her, Rhianwyn is furious.

Her friends Elspeth, Selena, and Lilliana envy her fate, which seems better than that of servant, harlot or bartered princess. At the mystical sunstones where they meet to bemoan their powerless futures, a crone appears, offering them a magical opportunity to swap souls for a season. With each believing any life is better than the one given her, they agree, beginning a journey that will change them, their friendships, and their destinies forever.

Broccan, however, didn’t bargain on loving a wife who changes with the seasons. As Rhianwyn starts seeing her independence—and Broccan—through new eyes, she realizes that the pact meant to free her may destroy her best chance at happiness.

Sometimes the secret ingredient is right under your nose…

Executive Chef Sloan Leary just received the invitation of a lifetime to create signature holiday dishes for a premier meal delivery service. If she wins the contract, she can finally expand her restaurant to Paris, fulfilling a promise to her late grandmother. But first she’ll need to complete her annual two-week culinary exchange. Sloan is shocked when she’s sent to a small-town diner in Brooks Bend, Connecticut. If that weren’t enough, she learns her audition is to create dog food for pampered pooches—she’s never even had a pet.

Ex-military handyman Alex Edwards knows plenty about dogs—his beloved labradoodle is also his emotional support companion. So he’s happy to help newcomer Sloan create a Thanksgiving meal fit for canine cravings. When Sloan encourages him to go all in with his carpentry business, Alex pulls back. He stopped taking risks a long time ago and is happy with his slower life…right?

As they work to find the right seasonings, can Alex and Sloan rewrite the meal plans for their futures…with each other?

Thanksgiving is a time for family…

As a young widow and mother to a three-year-old boy, Sarah Mills’s life is complicated, becoming more so when her high school sweetheart, Daniel, moves back to Montana. He left her behind after graduation and she married his brother, only needing Daniel’s services as a sperm donor when she and her husband couldn’t conceive. Now Daniel’s offering her a job as resort manager—but he wants to be part of her son’s life.

Recently retired from pro football, Daniel Hunter is tired of holding on to secrets. He badly wants a relationship with his biological son, and a second chance with the woman he never stopped loving. He builds a first-rate eco resort in Sweetheart, Montana, to give him a shot at a new life post football and proposes to Sarah, thinking it’s the most practical choice for all three of them.

Daniel still makes Sarah’s heart skip a beat, but he’s left her behind once already. She’s convinced he won’t stay this time, either, and now it’s not just her heart at risk.

He dreams of saving his ancestral home. She longs to escape hers.

Persephone is the youngest Penryn, and she’s always felt like an afterthought. As her siblings ventured out one by one, she was left behind, learning to rely on herself. Now that they’ve all returned and are on a mission to save their home, she’s reluctantly falling in with their plans and keeping her distance, especially when an Oxford-educated intern arrives wanting to learn how to save one’s ancestral home.

Oliver Belhaven has come to Casterglass to prove to his uncle that he can make Pembury a financial success, so the only home Oliver has ever had isn’t sold. He is intrigued by the beautiful and mercurial Seph and senses a kindred spirit—alone even around family.

Oliver may be charming, but under her surly facade Seph is afraid to get close to anyone. Yet the longer Oliver works at Casterglass, the more invested he becomes—in Seph and in saving his home. But will achieving one dream mean that he has to let go of another? And can Seph finally learn to let go—and love?

Follow her dream…

After making a deathbed promise to her father, Joelle Winslow is ready to seize the NYC business opportunity to take her jewelry designs global. All she needs to do is cash out her inherited half of the family ranch in Montana—which means convincing her childhood rival, and now co-heir, to sell or buy her out. Sparks fly when Matt, no longer a gangly, solemn teenager, but a tall, handsome cowboy with work-hewn muscles, is unwilling to give up on the legacy he’s worked so hard to keep without a fight. And part of his bargain includes Joelle staying at the ranch with him through Homecoming Weekend.

The son her father never had…

The Winslow ranch rescued Matt Locke from a life in the foster-care system. As an orphan boy adopted by Clark Winslow and groomed to take over the ranch, he wants nothing more than to marry, raise a family, and continue the legacy of the man who became a father to him after his parents’ tragic deaths. Matt can’t imagine a life anywhere else, and he definitely can’t afford to buy Joelle out. Can he convince the dark haired beauty to not walk out on him and her home a second time?

Five Acts of Sabotage, One Final Reveal

When I first started writing the Grit and Grace series, I knew I wanted each book to be more than just a love story. Each one had to stand on its own, with its own couple, its own romance, and its own happily-ever-after. But there also had to be a deeper thread pulling the stories together.

That thread was sabotage.

From the very beginning, someone wanted to see the women-owned rough stock company fail. And in each book, that hidden enemy struck in a new way. One act of sabotage per story. Five different dangers. And all along, one burning question: who was behind it all?

The Clues Along the Way

In every installment, readers saw a new scheme unfold—sometimes subtle, sometimes life-threatening. Each heroine and hero had to overcome not only personal challenges, but also another blow to the company they were fighting to protect. And while the mystery deepened with every twist, the true face of the saboteur remained just out of reach.

Book Five: The Truth Comes Out

And now, at last, it’s here.

She’s determined to protect her friends and the life she’s built, but never imagined that love could pose the greatest danger of all…

Meira Ware, once a brilliant genetic researcher, has worked hard to build a new life as a bronc rider after being driven out of her old career by unfounded accusations. She’s kept her secrets close, never wanting her past to destroy the fragile hope she’s built with Grit and Grace. But when sabotage escalates—and the culprit finally prepares to strike the decisive blow—Meira can no longer hide.

Enter Dillon Johnson, a former Navy SEAL turned private investigator, hired to discover who’s been trying to bring the company down. He’s sharp, determined, and utterly captivated by the brilliant woman who would rather face down a bronc than risk her heart.

As attraction sparks between them, the danger grows more menacing. And when the truth about the saboteur is finally revealed, both Meira and Dillon will face the ultimate question: can love survive when the truth cuts this close to home?

The End of the Ride

Writing this series was a challenge, a joy, and at times a nail-biter for me too. I wanted every book to deliver both romance and suspense, but I also wanted the mystery to stretch across all five, building to a finale that would feel satisfying.

The women of Grit and Grace Rodeo Roughstock Company have proven that love, as always, is worth the risk.

Excerpt:

After taking his place next to Asher in the center of the living room that was as large and opulent as the rest of the A Bar H ranch, Dillon did his best to school his face into a pleasantly neutral expression. He hadn’t been kidding when he’d commented to the mahogany-haired beauty that it was quite the crowd gathered before him.

Seeing the list of names Asher had sent him on a computer screen didn’t quite carry the impact as the collection of actual bodies did. It was a lot of people to research, both online and through face-to-face interviews, but that was why he was being paid the big bucks. Regardless of Asher’s claim that everyone here was trustworthy, Dillon fully intended to draw his own conclusions.

Plus, it was the simplest way to identify possible motivators for outside bad actors to commit the acts Noah had detailed over the phone when asking for Dillon’s help. Asher had also forwarded him the anonymous letter that had been sent to the investors Grit and Grace had secured, which had led to at least one of them withdrawing their financial support. The stakes were steadily getting higher.

Dillon acknowledged Asher’s introduction with a polite nod of his head. “Thank you, Mr. Halliday.”

Noah fake-coughed into his fist while saying, “Kiss-ass.”

Man, he’d missed the guy. A small smile pulled at the corners of Dillon’s mouth, but otherwise, he did his best to pretend not to have heard his former teammate. “As Noah’s clearly more intelligent older brother said, I’m a PI out of the Big Easy, and I’ve been brought in to look more closely at the incidents, as Asher so politely characterized them, that have been occurring here at the A Bar H and in Last Stand.”

Questions and conversation erupted from the group in front of him.

Though the temptation was great, he resisted the urge to slide his gaze to the woman standing in the doorway to his right, despite swearing he’d heard a soft gasp come from her. He already knew in his bones she was going to be a distraction to him. Best to shut it down now.

Dillon pushed his hands into the front pockets of his tactical pants as he ran his gaze over the people seated on the couches, waiting for them to get the initial reaction out of their systems. The women of Grit and Grace were all stunning, and their men were decidedly possessive looking.

A pretty honey-blonde seated on the couch directly in front of him asked Asher, “Do you think we’re in danger?”

The man seated next to her put a comforting hand on her knee. “I won’t let anything happen to Lily. Or you.”

According to the list of the inhabitants of the A Bar H Asher had sent him, Dillon knew Lily was the baby’s name, so the woman must be Sammie Neisson, being comforted by her new husband, Alec Neisson.

The petite platinum blonde on Sammie’s other side said to her, “Noah will never let anyone hurt us, Sammie.”

So, that must be Emma. Dillon shifted his gaze to Noah, raising his brows in a silent inquiry. Noah’s shit-eating grin and slight, So, I’m lucky as hell shrug was confirmation enough.

Dillon gave him an Atta boy dip of his chin. Again, he had to fight the urge to glance toward the doorway, where a very different sort of woman stood. One who brought to mind fire and earth.

Finally, Asher stepped forward, his hands raised. “Settle down, everyone. Let the man speak.”

Once quiet was restored, Asher turned to Dillon and gestured for him to continue.

Dillon returned to his spiel. “I’m here because there is nothing polite about a screwdriver jammed into the ranch truck’s gas tank. Or the fireworks that could have caused harm as well as mayhem during the Last Stand Fourth of July Rodeo Parade. Or the oil rag fire set against the equipment barn during your Christmas Open House. Not to mention the cut barbed wire fence in the bred longhorns’ pasture. And there was definitely nothing polite about the anonymous letters disparaging the women of Grit and Grace that were sent to your investors.

“While I’ll begin my investigation with the last incident by tracing the IP address the letter was sent from, I will need to interview each of you to learn as much as I can to also help me get to the root of your problem.”

Dillon finally allowed his gaze to slip to Meira and promptly wished he hadn’t. The color that had previously been riding high on her cheeks had leached away, leaving her pale. And the suspicion that sparked in her eyes had been replaced with something he’d seen far too many times before in his previous career. Fear.

Now what would a PhD genetic researcher turned bronc rider turned roughstock contractor trained in Krav Maga be afraid of? Did she think her past had come back to haunt her?

She’d been the first name on Asher’s list that he’d looked up on the internet this morning, but all he’d been able to find was her impressive academic achievements and a hire date at some lab. So, he found an employee list and started making phone calls.

He’d been hung up on the minute he’d mentioned Meira’s name until he got lucky and connected with a woman in HR who was retiring and apparently had no shits to give or secrets to keep. What he’d learned had placed Meira in a much different light for him.

Meira had been sexually harassed by some of her fellow researchers, and when she’d complained, as she rightly should have, she had been the one to lose her career. The woman in HR felt strongly that Meira had been shafted, and that she should have filed a lawsuit, but apparently, her parents had discouraged it. What kind of parents did that?

Yet Meira obviously hadn’t let what had happened defeat her. Little wonder why she’d learned self-defense.

In a blink of an eye, he saw the fear replaced by a look of wariness he was also very familiar with in his present career. Clearly, what she’d gone through had left a mark.

Had the mark taken the form of undeserved shame?

Distraction or not, Dillon knew his first interview would be with one Dr. Meira Ware.

This series has been in the works since 2020. I was on a break from publishing when the pandemic hit. Like most people, I was stuck at home with extra time on my hands. Ideas started percolating. I’m a romantic suspense author, but I wasn’t in the mood for danger. I wanted to write a softer, lighter, contemporary love story. Cowboy’s Last Stand was born. Although I didn’t plan for it, a hint of suspense crept in.

Why cowboys?

I’ll never forget the day Lori Foster visited my local Romance Writers group. During the Q&A session I raised my hand to ask why she writes blue-collar heroes. She smiled and said, “Well I just don’t know any billionaires.” I’ve always admired Foster and other authors for writing about regular people. I decided to follow suit, because guess what? I don’t know any billionaires either.

I’ve written a lot of different heroes over the years, mostly blue-collar, many outdoorsmen. I wanted to keep that down-to-earth element for this series and add a heartland setting to match the story tone. I chose Texas, so a cowboy hero seemed like a natural fit.

Why Tule?

By the end of 2020 I had a new job and a new degree. Writing took a back seat for several years. Then one day I felt lost and unsatisfied, overwhelmed by life. I needed to write again, so I did. I eked out the hours on early mornings and weekends. I finished Cowboy’s Last Stand and wrote two other books in the series. I thought they were good enough to submit, so I took a deep breath and prepared to dive back into the publishing world.

I was researching small publishers when I came across Tule. I recognized the name of the founder, Jane Porter. I’ve read Flirting with Forty, and I wrote my own surfer romance called Crash Into Me. I’m a fan of several other Tule authors, including Megan Crane and Sarah Mayberry. As I browsed the titles for Texas Born and Montana Born, excitement buzzed through me. The hero of Cowboy’s Last Stand is from Montana, and the book is set in Texas. I felt this strong sense of fate, as if I’d landed in the right place. I submitted immediately.

I got a call from Jane within a few weeks. Tule wanted to publish my series. Yay! I learned that the company is based in San Clemente, not far from where I live in San Diego County. I’m delighted to find a home for this series with a local female-run business.

It’s great to be back. I hope you find as much pleasure and solace in reading Cowboy’s Last Stand as I did in writing it.

What’s your favorite hero type? Do you like cowboys or billionaires? Surfers or sheriffs? Let me know in the comments!

And if you are anything like me, you also keep your fingers tightly crossed against having that hope and belief tested.

The closest I’ve come to such a test was when the area where I live—basically the woods—had to be evacuated because of a very scary fire. Having lived in the area for a while, I of course had a plan regarding what would be loaded into the car and taken to safety. But when the time came to evacuate, did I follow that plan? Of course not. I took what was important to me, which turned out to be just my son (a grown ass man, but still), my dog, my grandmother’s paintings, and my computer along with the current book’s notes. So, in one afternoon, I discovered what was truly important to me. What turned out to be my backup plan.

Just as Laura Senske and Asher Halliday learn what is important to them in Swept Away by the Cowboy, the fourth book in my Grit and Grace series. Only it’s not a fire that has them making snap choices, but a flash flood, an all-too-common threat in the Texas Hill Country. They discover that their relationships with friends and family, and with each other, are what truly matter in their world.

Excerpt:

“How much farther?” she asked.

He smiled and looked at her. “Are you asking me if we’re there yet?”

She returned his smile with one befitting a rodeo queen. If he’d been walking, he would have tripped.

“I suppose I am.”

He got out his phone and brought up a map app. “Nearly.”

Her laugh was one of astonishment. “You have an app for that?”

Shrugging, he turned the screen toward her. “Just basic GPS.”

“And here I thought you knew where you were going.”

“I do. During the remodel, I rode, or drove, or flew over every bit of this ranch. I know where Alec took the bulls. But it never hurts to keep track of where we are.”

“So you never leave anything to chance?”

“Never. I always have a plan. You lose if you don’t have a plan.”

Directing her gaze ahead, she nodded slowly. “If only things always went according to plan.”

“That’s why you need a backup plan.”

She made a rude noise, but her small smile appeared genuine. Then she straightened in the saddle and pulled Misty up short.

She pointed at something in front of them. “There.”

Asher shifted his gaze to where she pointed and spotted two bulls, one tall and black as night, with the distinct shoulder hump of a brahma, and the other thickly muscled and a tawny, cinnamon red. They were huddled together beneath a scraggly black hickory tree smack dab in the center of what was clearly a gully wash strewn with boulders of all sizes. Flash floods had thundered down this narrow space before.

Laura mused, “So much for them being smart enough to get to high ground.”

“You were right to come after them,” he said sincerely.

She glanced at him, her appreciation of his acknowledgement clear in the depths of her hazel eyes.

His chest tightened.

A crack of thunder startled them all. Except for the bulls. The bulls didn’t give so much as a twitch of their thick hides.

“Whoa.” Laura tilted her head back and searched the thickening layer of clouds.

“It was pretty far off, but we shouldn’t dawdle.”

As if to punctuate his statement, the first fat drops of rain hit them.

Laura asked him, “You don’t have rain gear, do you?”

Asher shook his head. “I’ll be fine. You brought some?”

“I did.”

“Let’s get those big boys out of this gully and up onto that knoll there.” He pointed to the higher of the two granite knolls they were currently riding between. “Then you can put your rain gear on.”

“Sounds like a plan,” she answered brightly, but he didn’t fail to notice how tightly she gripped Misty’s reins.

He was seized with the urge to reassure her. “We found them. They’re okay. We’re going to be okay.”

The words were barely out of his mouth before he felt as much as heard a deep rumbling sound coming from somewhere up the gully. Misty pranced sideways, and even the unflappable Cedar shifted nervously. The bulls bellowed and began to back away from the tree.

Asher met Laura’s wide-eyed gaze. “We’ve got to move.”

A writer’s mind—well, this writer’s mind at least—resembles a pizza run through a shredder, only in reverse. I start with all these little pieces collected here, there, and everywhere, some of which fit together, most of which don’t. But eventually, I’ll take a scene I remember from here, that bit suggested by an article I read there, and my observations of people everywhere, and move them from that stew pot on the back burner of my brain to a plate and see if I can make anything resembling a pizza out of it all.

Now that I’ve mangled and tangled enough metaphors, let me tell you about the little pieces that came together to inspire the Home At Last series.

A movie supposedly “set” in the Hill Country of Texas that looked nothing like the Hill Country of Texas.

Yes, a certain famous actor who walked away from one of the biggest hit shows ever (a show I’ve never even watched, by the way. Yet…) because something else had hold of his heart.

Coming across a doctor’s description of the injuries my husband suffered when he was a motorcycle cop and got shoved under a parked car by a kid out joyriding in a “borrowed” car.

The memory of the blacksmith who used to shoe my horse back in my barrel racing days, a man who would handle a recalcitrant beast by swearing his head off at him, but in the sweetest, most loving and gentle tone of voice you have ever heard.

And there I had the first three books of the series, blossoming, and they in turn inspired the fourth and closing installment, which will be out in time for the holidays.

I’m sharing this because it’s not usually that clear to me, where all the pieces came from. Even now, with over 100 books in print, the process is still sometimes a mystery. I think I’ve always had this fear that if I dig too deep, if I try to hard to figure out how it works, it will stop working. So I leave it be, trust it to come through, and it always has. That’s not to say it’s all smooth running, sometimes I want to run away screaming, but as long as that pot’s still bubbling on the back burner, I know the solution will eventually float to the top. That eventually I’ll ask the right “What if?” question, and my characters—and I—will be off and running again. So what about those “What if?” questions?

At a talk I gave years ago at my local library, someone asked me the usual “Where do you get your ideas?” question. Setting aside my usual smart-aleck “When they’re on sale at Walmart,” answer, I pointed to a poster on the wall I’d noticed on my way in. It was of a little girl with an armful of books and a joyous expression on her face. Some distance behind her was a little boy with a fiercely cranky scowl on his face, looking as if he’d like to burn all those books. Obviously the point was that the books made for a happier person, and given we were in a library, that fit. But I said to the questioner, “What if I told you those two were siblings?” The room erupted with comments on what their life must be like, what each of them must be like, and their parents, and where they were going to end up in the future.

And that, my friend and fellow reader, is how it works. And after those 100 books, I still love the process, and the results. Which is more than enough for me to put up with the shredder and all the little pieces. Because some day, one of those pieces will be the key to a new story.
