Today is release day for Surgeon’s Surprise Baby!

My feelings are a bit mixed. I’m always excited about a new release. A brand new book
going out in the world. I’m also a little sad today because it’s the last book in the Montana Made series. It’s hard to say goodbye to a set of characters who’ve lived in
your head for years. But thinking of something new is part of the fun too.:)

It’s a second chance book, not just for Aria and Ryan but for Aria and her father. A father who left her when she was young, but there were circumstances Aria didn’t know about. I love second chance stories. There’s always a happy ending!

I’ve been thinking a lot about series lately. They’re fun to write but also hard sometimes.
But then, my process for most of my books seems to be part torture, part bliss. When I
talk (Okay, whine) to my friends about it they just tell me it’s part of my process.
Frankly, I’d like another gift book. That’s what we call books that almost write
themselves. I’ve only had one, although I have had some hard books and some a bit
easier to write. But the feeling of the words just pouring out of you is something so
special and so fun!

There are a lot of things about series that I really enjoy. The characters who run through
every book. At first I don’t know them. Usually, two or three books in, I know something
about the other characters. But sometimes I know almost nothing about one of them
until I start their book. Often I send them away to be mentioned but not seen much, if
any. And then I have to figure out what in the world their story is.

In one of my earlier Marietta books, Return of the Cowgirl, I’d sent Glenna away—to Argentina! Then when it was her turn I thought, why in the world did I do that? But it
turned out to be fun.

I like the animals too. Horses, dogs, cats, I like them all. And places—of business,
homes, parks, rodeos, they can all be characters in themselves. I get to revisit them and
each time I learn a little more about them.

Research Makes Me Happy – A Quick Check-In from Author Eve Gaddy on the Importance of Research!

Research makes me happy. I love research. To me it’s one of the best things about being a writer. With every book there’s always something to research even if I’ve looked into it before. Montana Medic’s Match gave me the chance to research paramedics, which I’ve done in the past. I have a friend who is a firefighter and paramedic. But this time I researched flight paramedics. Then I had to figure out who would be in charge, the flight nurse or the flight paramedic. To my surprise it’s the flight nurse because she has the most training.

I watched a lot of videos to see the inner workings of the helicopter and the crews. Helicopter accidents and common injuries that can happen were another thing I read about. I looked into the schooling and certifications necessary for flight nurses and paramedics. And then I had to look into battlefield medics and surgeons and what was involved in becoming an army medic. (I knew what was involved in becoming a surgeon since my husband was one). The hero was a battlefield medic and his best friend was a field surgeon. All of which is very interesting to a research geek like me.

My poor husband wonders why I research things like divorce laws in Texas. No, honey, I’m not looking for me but for my character. I wrote a book about a bomb unit detective and got to talk to an FBI agent about that. I was a little worried but she said I wasn’t asking the right questions to make them worry. Thank goodness!

Since I write about a lot of cowboys, cowgirls, rodeos, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, and more, I read a lot about that. And horses! I love looking at horses and all the stuff that goes with them. What type of horses do they raise? What are the characteristics of those horses? What do they look like? I can get lost looking at horse pictures for hours.

I write about doctors a lot. I’m married to one who was a general surgeon and a radiologist. My daughter is a physician’s assistant, who has worked in OB/GYN and general practice, pediatrics, and is certified in lifestyle medicine.

One of my earlier books was about wildlife smuggling, specifically birds. Interesting but also horrible to an animal lover like me. I still want to write a book about search and rescue teams and their K9s. I love dogs so reading anything about dogs is always good for me. Cats are fun too. Of course I need to watch cat videos on Instagram! It’s research, after all.

I’ve researched a lot of other things as well, far too many to list. No matter how carefully I research something, or who I talk to, or even places I’ve lived, I can make mistakes. And even if I’m writing about something that is a personal experience there’s often someone who doesn’t think I know what I’m talking about!

I do my best to be as accurate as I can be. But the main thing I want to do is entertain and the more I can know about my subject the more believable I can make it.

As most of you know, writers are weird.:) I don’t mean that in a bad way. After all, I’m a writer. But even I must admit that not only talking to imaginary people but also having imaginary people talk to me is a bit…well, weird. Unless you’re a writer.

What does this have to do with The Christmas Cowboy, my November 7 release, you ask? Liam McFarland, the hero of this book, almost took over his brother Logan’s book. I had to slap him down several times, promising him that yes, he would get his own book with his own heroine but no, Logan’s book (The Wrong Brother) wasn’t his! You couldn’t really blame the guy since Logan’s heroine originally came to Marietta to get to know Liam. And Liam does play an important part in Logan’s book.

Liam listened to me and backed off. Begrudgingly, I might add. But Logan told him in no uncertain terms that his brother needed to butt out of The Wrong Brother. Which he didn’t exactly do but he tried. Anyway, after writing Logan’s book I got to finally write Liam’s.

I’m always asking my husband and daughter, both in the medical profession, questions. Val Fletcher, the heroine of this book, is pregnant throughout. (Don’t worry. It’s not a spoiler. You find this out really quickly at the beginning.) My daughter was a OB/GYN Physician’s Assistant. I asked her all sorts of questions. I like to be as accurate as I can be. Sometimes she’ll ask me a question and I’ll say, “I don’t know. She (or he) hasn’t told me yet. It took her a while to understand my characters do talk to me. I can’t explain it. They just do. It’s when they stop talking that I have a problem.

I love this guy. Liam is sweet, he’s protective, he’ll do anything for the people he loves. He loves his family. He loves his horses and his dogs and pretty soon he falls in love with his heroine, Val, although he doesn’t think she’s in love with him. He doesn’t know, although she told me several times, that Val is in love with him and has been forever.

Their journey from a marriage of convenience to a full-fledged love was a joy to write. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I was thinking about what sparked the idea for my new book, The Wrong Brother. My daughter has been married for quite a while but I’ll never forget when she met her future husband.

She was living at home in between teaching jobs. One of her college friends set her up on a blind date with an old friend of hers. He asked one of his friends to go and my daughter asked one of hers so it was a double (blind) date.

When my daughter got home I asked her how it went. She started talking about the guy she didn’t have a date with. Not just mentioning him but it was clear she was really interested in this guy. So I said, “Wait. Didn’t you have a date with the other guy?”

“Oh, yes. He was nice.” And she continued talking about the other one. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when the other one called her for a date. That evening he’d called my daughter’s date and asked if he minded if he asked my daughter out. He said no, that was fine. As they say, that was the start of a beautiful relationship.:)

And her original blind date? He told the story at their wedding.

So I asked myself what would happen if my heroine went to Marietta to meet a man she met online? And what if instead of falling for the one she went to meet, she falls for his brother?

Logan and Cici’s story doesn’t go nearly as smoothly as my daughter’s did. Even though Liam, Logan’s brother and the man she met online, agreed they were better as friends, that sure didn’t solve all the problems. (Liam has his own story in The Christmas Cowboy – releasing November 7th of this year.) You’ll have to read it to see what happens!
