CHRISTMAS IN RIVER’S EDGE – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Author Nan Reinhardt!

Christmas is a time of great expectations—don’t we all go into the season looking forward to time spent with family and friends, attending parties and giving gifts, decorating our houses and inhaling the lovely scents of pumpkin pie and fresh-cut pine?

In Christmas in River’s Edge, Jenny Weaver and her son, Luke, are anticipating doing all the wonderful things that the little river town has in store each year during the holidays. The Candlelight Walk, the Christmas Parade, hot chocolate and sugar cookies on the River Walk, Santa’s arrival on the big old fire truck, and Aidan Flaherty’s annual Christmas Eve show. Holiday traditions abound in River’s Edge!

Jenny is delighting in the holiday preparations. But amidst all the merrymaking, real life comes in with Luke’s dad, Jenny’s ex, dealing with alcoholism and her sister Jo so far away in North Carolina. As much as Jenny loves seeing Jo so happy with her scientist fiancé, Alex, and her other sister, Jasmine crazy in love with her carpenter, Eli, she can’t help feeling a twinge of envy. The holidays bring home the fact that, although she has Luke and her loving family, Jenny’s life feels very small. There is no one special in her life. Nothing extraordinary.

But when high school friend Gabe Dawson comes back into her life, she’s wary—not sure she wants to bring a globe-trotting archeologist who’s never been a parent or a husband before in her and Luke’s life. However, Gabe manages to be a stable, peaceful influence, all the while encouraging Jenny to discover herself and her passion—writing novels for tweens. Maybe there’s something to be said for old friends and for finding pleasure in the little things… Jenny must search her heart this holiday season to know what’s next for her and Luke.

We all go into the holidays with great expectations, but let’s remember that maybe what we long for isn’t found in the extraordinary; perhaps it’s found in the very ordinary. In a family dinner, in the hanging of holiday decorations, in watching your child put a special ornament on the Christmas tree, and in simply sitting quietly by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate, a good book, and someone you love.

Tule Author Q&A: Robyn Neeley reflects on “Jingle Jammies” becoming a Hallmark movie!

Robyn Neeley stopped by the Tule blog to discuss her book “Jingle Jammies” becoming a Hallmark film (Christmas by Design) and its premier this month!

Your book “Jingle Jammies” has been made into a Hallmark film, what was your reaction when you heard the news?
To say that I am incredibly excited is an understatement. I was at work when I learned the news and jumped high out of my seat, eyes wide, hand over mouth in disbelief. After a lot of cheering, I went to the Hallmark Channel website to check out the movie’s webpage. It was when I saw the character names “Charlotte” and “Spencer” next to the actors who play them that I LOST it, and the tears began to flow! That was the moment I’d been waiting for for over a year and had envisioned in 2020 when I first started writing the book. Seeing my character names next to the actors, I knew that my dream had just come true. I’ll never forget it!

What are you most excited to see in Hallmark’s film adaptation of “Jingle Jammies”?
I seriously can’t wait to see all the wonderful changes made to adapt this into film. Of course, I’m going to be looking out for any similarities to the book and “Easter egg” moments. I’m already doing that with the photos on the Hallmark Channel website. I spotted in one of the publicity photos a drink dispenser with some type of holiday green drink, and it just so happens I have a Grinch hot chocolate in Jingle Jammies. I also noticed that there is a Dee Dee character in a similar occupation to the one in Jingle Jammies. (I zoomed in on the actress’s name tag for that one and was pleasantly surprised that it in fact reads, Dee Dee.:)

How did you decide on holiday pajamas being the center focus of “Jingle Jammies“?
With the creative guidance from the Tule editorial team, we played with several elements to the original pitch including changing the occupation of one of the main characters from a handbag designer to popular sleepwear designer of the season’s must-have Christmas jammies. I thought that suggestion was brilliant and so original! People love showing off their Christmas jammies and for many families, it’s one of their time-honored traditions. You never see anyone miserable sporting their jammies! I leaned into this element of Christmas that I found super fun. I even got to design – in my head – a pajama line, which I had a blast writing. If I knew how to sew, I’d be showing them off this holiday season!

How are you celebrating the premier?
I’m hoping to surprise my mom who is just over the moon about all of this. She’s a huge Hallmark fan, and we’ve watched so many Hallmark movies together over the years. She lives in another state, and it would be so special if I could watch the premiere with her.

If not Christmas, what other holiday would you write about?
I really enjoy writing stories set around the fall season in general, but every year, just when I’m thinking about writing a different holiday romance, I see a dog in Christmas pajamas; or my town’s Christmas square strung in lights; or the Starbuck’s signature red cups and BAM; I get pulled back into the fabulous Christmas allure once again. There’s something so magical; and so hopeful; and just so perfect about falling in love during the Christmas holidays. Am I right? It really is a wonderful time.

When my agent sent me an email, letting me know that Tule was interested in publishing my manuscript of what was to become STRIKING GOLD, I was eating lunch. That’s about all I remember of that day. It just goes to show that you can be minding your own business, doing nothing more than one more mundane task in your day, and then your life suddenly changes and heads in the most unexpected of all places.

This particular theme, of life surprising you and taking you on a detour, is something I’ve always enjoyed writing about. This is never more true than in my debut romance, STRIKING GOLD. In it, Mia, a former overachiever, most-likely-to-succeed student, has always had a steady plan, knowing exactly where she wanted to go in life to achieve what she sees as success. This makes it more devastating for her, when life hits a bump and she finds herself back in her hometown, trying to find a temp job that’s far removed from what she ever imagined herself doing. The feeling of shame and embarrassment is magnified when she runs into the guy she used to tutor in school and realizes that, while he was a person who clearly struggled in his education, he’s now doing better than her. Their situation has flipped.

Mia’s journey in the book changes her perspective on not only what success looks like but also learning that “going backwards” doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. The best thing to happen to her is reconnecting with Ross, who is a man stuck on his own “failures” from the past. Together they discover the ebb and flow of success and failure, happiness and despair. These are the things that make life interesting and it’s better to be shared by someone you trust, someone who can share both the good things and the hard. This is more valuable than gold.

When I was drafting this story, I had a very strong sense of Mia from the start. Much of our personal background, and tough life lessons, are ones that are very familiar to me. As a biracial Latina, I too have felt that awkwardness of standing between groups, not really belonging completely. This awkwardness is especially true when you’re an overachiever, people-pleaser, a person who wants to be all things for everyone and hates disappointing anyone. We’re more willing to sacrifice self-identity in order to make those around us happier.

The hardest lesson of all to learn is that no matter what choice we end up making, there’s always going to be someone who’s disappointed in us. Unfortunately, in trying to do our best to avoid conflicts, because it seems easier, we can end up becoming stuck and unhappy. While it’s easy to say, “who cares what anyone else thinks?”, personal growth really happens when you switch your thinking to “What can I do to make sure I’m not disappointed? What’s going to make me happy?” Because if someone is always going to be disappointed no matter what, it’s better if that one person isn’t you.

Mia making that choice, deciding to choose what her life looks like and who she wants to be as a person, was a very rewarding journey to write, one that brought a lot of tears. Instead of standing awkwardly between worlds, not quite knowing where she fits in, she makes her own world, one she could be proud of and find love.

MEET ME IN RIVER’S EDGE – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Author Nan Reinhardt!

I love reading books where the heroine’s career is unexpected, which is why I had so much fun writing about boat mechanic Joanna Weaver in Meet Me in River’s Edge. I think as women writers (and readers), we want our heroines to have fabulous careers that crash through the glass ceiling and show them as smart, sophisticated women.

I’ve written a female lawyer, a photographer and concert pianist, a firefighter, a freelance editor, a marketing expert, a heart surgeon, and even a mayor. I’ve also written teachers, homemakers, and a woman whose abusive husband forced her to leave her home and start a new life. Each of these characters had an definite arc that took them into a conflict and brought them out on the other side, stronger, better, happier.

Jo Weaver’s life in Meet Me in River’s Edge feels small at first, although her career as a boat mechanic in her family’s marina business is certainly unusual and took a great deal of apprenticeship with her father and grandfather. While her two sisters went to college, then moved away and found new lives and careers, Jo stayed rooted in River’s Edge and feels safe there with the people she grew up with in the familiar town of her childhood.

As often happens in life, though, things changed for the Weaver triplets. Jo’s sisters come home, and serendipity brings a new man into her life who helps her realize that she might be a little stuck and needs to reevaluate what she wants. Maybe that means that Jo will take steps toward a new life, but never a new career, because she loves working on boat motors, she thrives in the marina atmosphere, and she’s damn good at what she does. Her new love gets this about her, cherishes who she is, and isn’t about to ask her to change that part of her. As Alex Briggs says in Meet Me in River’s Edge, “Who knew the smell of two-cycle oil could be such a turn-on?”

So, women and careers—does it matter whether we went to college or trade school or simply ended our formal education in high school? Is it important to the whole feminist journey whether we are homemakers or attorneys or bank tellers or teachers or store clerks or doctors or stay-at-home moms or… writers? Not really, it only matters that whatever we do, we give it our very best.

ONCE UPON A BEAST – Release Day Blog Post Featuring Author Kyra Jacobs!

Hello everyone!

Kyra Jacobs, here, to share some “behind the scenes” tidbits from my latest sweet romance novel, ONCE UPON A BEAST. This is the first book in my Bourbon Falls series, with each book taking a fresh, modern spin on a classic fairy tale. As the title suggests, Beauty and the Beast is the featured retelling to kick off this new series. And Isaac Manning was certainly a fun “beast” to write.

Actually, Isaac’s deaf rescue bulldog Louie is the only real beast in this story, and he’s too adorable to be called a beast. (; If you’ve followed me on social media, you’ve likely seen a post or two about bulldogs. Though I’ve yet to own one (bucket list item), I’m a huge fan. I mean, how can you resist that scrunched face and wiggly butt? The Louie in this tale was loosely based on a friend’s bulldog named Louis and he’s built like a mini tank.

In the story, Louie loves Delaney Brooks, the first stranger he’s allowed to meet in their new hometown of Bourbon Falls, Indiana. Del is the confident landscape designer and greenhouse co-owner (whose niece crashes into Isaac’s landscaping at the start of the book to kick off our story) who stops by to cut down a mangled, overgrown arborvitae. I have a few overgrown arborvitaes of my own, but they’re a great source of afternoon shade so I plan to leave them alone as long as possible.

Also, for the record, I’m terrible at both pronouncing and typing the word arborvitae. LOL

The human hero of our story is Isaac Manning, who is holed up in Bourbon Falls, hiding from the world. I won’t say why, but he’s certainly got his reasons. His former home is the Big Apple, where I’ve based a few stories after visiting there a number of years back. Given the choice between New York City and small town Indiana, though, I’m choosing Indiana every time.

What can I say? I grew up a small town girl. (Cue John Mellencamp)

So, what pulls this trio together for the story, aside from that mangled shrub I struggle to spell? (Try saying that fast five times!) It’s the lovely bookstore, Brooks Books, run by Del’s family and set in a beautiful historic building situated at the heart of downtown Bourbon Falls. Lucky for Del and Isaac, they receive abundant support from a fun cast of secondary characters, including The Sisters—three elders of the town who keep the local rumor mill churning. I love writing sassy older women in my stories and these three are a hoot. Perhaps this tendency is a nod to one of the shows I grew up watching (The Golden Girls).

And why Bourbon Falls? Admittedly, I was inspired by a road sign I saw while driving my sons to their soccer games a while back. When I turned off the main highway to take a closer look at the town of Bourbon, Indiana, I knew it was the perfect setting for the Brooks family and their bookstore. (P.S. Bourbon Street Pizza shop is amazing…)
