Hey Tuligans,

It’s always exciting for me to talk about a new book release—probably similar to a mom
talking about her kid who has a certain skill or interest or an imagined superpower. The
Cowboy’s One-Year Bride is book four in a Montana ranching family series—the
Telfords of Montana.

I created the legacy ranching family at least eight or nine years ago with the idea that
eventually I’d write a series and voila! I remember being at party when I was still quite
young and recently married, talking to a fabulously interesting and funny woman with an
amazing house on a hilltop with a spectacular view of Seattle. We were talking about life
and dreams, and I said that I wanted to write romances—up until then I’d published only
as a journalist and a poet. She sat there with a faint smile and a glass of wine and a
dreamy, though earnest expression. “You need to relax,” she said “so you can enjoy the
ride. It all comes. Not necessarily when you want it to, but it does.”

I didn’t understand her then. Or accept her worldview. It seemed so passive. Where was
the scheming and drive? But now, as I look back at my life and the things I wanted that
seemed impossible sometimes did come. Or my goals changed. But with the Telford
Family, I wanted an honorable, deep-seated cowboy-code patriarch who was committed
to his family and the land. And then to shake it up, I gave him a brother, dark where he was light. Corner-cutting where he dug in. Selfish where he was giving. And then I created the next generation—scattered them but brought them home.

Back to the land. Back to family.

I have never written a mail-order bride romance before. I considered it a creative
challenge, and it was fun to brainstorm, finagle, and create characters and a premise
that would feel authentic to them and the situation. Easy maybe with a wildly wealthy
man. But of course, my heroine isn’t motivated by money. And she’s fiercely
independent. He had to convince her another way…

Excerpt

Telford and Ayana walked side by side up the stairs, and he had a strange impulse to take her hand.

Don’t rush her.

So unlike him to push or stake a claim.

The lobby of the Graff Hotel surprised him with its elegance combined with a touch of historic rusticity. He noted a bar that looked Irish-themed—strange, but maybe not. He definitely needed to lean into his research on Montana, Marietta, and the Telfords before he made any sort of approach.

“Welcome to the Graff. You must be here for the wedding.”
He blinked at the check-in clerk. Was she psychic? But he hadn’t thought they’d have a
wedding beyond the court date.

“Yes, we are,” Ayana lied smoothly. “We’re very excited. Your town is so cute. First time
here.” She smiled like the sun. “We thought we’d arrive early and explore your town. I already saw a chocolate shop and read that Sage’s is famous for her homemade hot chocolate, so that’s on my list.”

“She is and so much more. You must be a relation, Mr. Crow. You’re the spitting image of
the groom.”

Telford felt his blood drain from his head. Wedding. Groom. Spitting image. It was like
being shoved though a curtain on stage during the middle of a play. Maybe that damn cowboy hadn’t been bluffing.

“You get that all the time, don’t you, baby.” Ayana, slid her arm through his and gazed up at
his frozen stoniness like he was the center of the universe. Her eyes shone with admiration and something that looked—if he didn’t know better—like affection. “It’s lovely to know that there are still no secrets in a small town. Genes right? Tricky little buggers. Can sneakily skip a generation or jump out and shout ‘boo’ when you least expect.”

The front desk clerk—Joseph, Telford saw on his nametag—laughed.

“I know. I look more like my Uncle Ted than my dad, and boy did I get teased growing up.”

“Right?” Ayana smiled at the young man, and he blinked a little as if blinded and then
quickly ran through the check-in routine—amenities, services, spa and gym options, Wi-Fi, local restaurants. The romance package—chilling champagne, flowers, and a tray of snacks—were already in the room. The luggage had already been sent up.

Telford felt like he was still made of wood while they opted to take the stairs rather than the elevator.

“Romance package,” she hummed under her breath. “Good one.”

“I felt I should make an effort,” he said softly, though his lips and tongue still didn’t feel like
they belonged to him. So much for hiding. “And you’re clearly really good at pretending and improv.”

She stopped at the first landing and faced him.
“I better be. You’re paying to have the best. I told you I’m a hard worker.”
He didn’t like being reminded that he was paying her to pretend. Dumb. He’d never shirked
reality before. And why else would she be here but to do a job?

And in front of the whole lobby with the polished wide-planked pine floors, gleaming
stained-glass windows, polished wood columns, and sitting area where people and families lounged, playing board games, reading, or chatting over a variety of drinks while Telford and Ayana looked over it all, she stood on tiptoes, speared her fingers through his hair and kissed him.

My next release—The Bull Rider’s Baby Surprise already had some elements baked in. Setting: Marietta, Montana. Family: The Telfords of Montana (previously established), Hook: Cowboy as I was adding two new books to create a series with two previously written ‘orphaned’ books (Cowboy Come Home and Rogue Cowboy’s Secret Bride that were both part of different multi-author Copper Mountain Rodeo series).

So there were rules.

I’m always fired up to write western stories, especially cowboys. It just gets my swagger
on in a way I never manifest in my real life. With Cash Hunter (born Benz Telford
Stevens) I knew and he knew he had family in Marietta, but he’d never met them and
didn’t intend to. So of course, kicking off the book that was where he was going.

But why?

And that’s when I pictured the opening scene of the book. Cash has won again. He’s on
top heading into the finals, and it was the last ‘show’ (how he thinks of it) before a
month-long break. He’s sauntering out into the arena in his flamboyant chaps with
fringe, flashy shirt, open, no vest or helmet, just the iconic Restoril—black of course—to
take his place in the winner’s circle. He’s going through the motions, being charming,
mentally counting his winnings and thinking about the break he’s taking alone in the
mountains. The American Extreme Bull Rider tour staff flanks him as do the sponsors,
local dignitaries and of course, the media.

He’s hot. In command. And internally smug even as he faux humbles his way through
the interview and thank you speech. And that’s when everything in his life skids
sideways. A distraught, furious woman comes tearing across the arena cursing him out
before shoving a baby in his arms and disappearing into the crowd.

What does he do next?

I love creating awkward situations for my heroes who think they are all that. I love to
watch them squirm and fumble and attempt to seize back their life narrative, and it’ sweeter to watch their good guy persona reassert the vibe in the midst of chaos. And it’s
even better when I can provide a twist to one of my favorite tropes.

The Zoom was hella awkward. Cash felt like he was crawling out of his skin. He needed to get up and pace, make his case, defend himself, but he’d been shushed by Jessie. AEBR marketing exec Suzette glared at him and slashed a line near her mouth as if he were a kid who should zip it. Cash had seen other bull riders shut down, bossed around, but never had he been treated like he was a disease to be avoided—at least not since he’d lit out on his own at nearly seventeen with his GED and a burning desire to be independent and never have to take crap from anyone again.

He’d fought hard for his freedom and reputation and financial security, and no woman with a too-crazy-to-believe story and a likely money grift was going to snatch what he’d earned the hard way.

It was unbelievable that everyone seemed intent on believing the stranger not him. “A woman abandons her baby, in front of thousands, and I’m the bad guy?” He shook his head. “She ditched a baby with a stranger, and no one here thinks we should be calling the cops?” he shot back, when Suzette made the shushing noise again.

He tried to stand—much easier to make his case with his physical presence—but the AEBR intern Maddy Ramone, perched on the arm of his chair, blocking him in, the long line of her slim back straight and arrogant.

Dismissed.

He was shushed again, like a curious child while the grown-ups spoke, and it reminded him of the time he’d been ten, living with an aunt or a cousin or a family friend of his mother, and there’d been a family gathering to decide what was “best for the boy,” only it had seemed like everyone had only been interested in what was best for them.

Then his future had been bandied about, and he’d been lied to and surrendered to the state where a family who could take care of him would adopt him and give a home and a horse and a chance to be a cowboy.

Liars.

It still stung. No one wanted an angry, frustrated, dyslexic, rejected boy a couple of years shy of puberty.

For a moment the memory made him see red. His chest felt like a bull had kicked him through his Kevlar vest, and his fists clenched ready to fight for his life again. But no. He’d risen above all that. He’d taught himself to read the fine print of contracts, to charm sponsors, to use language not fists to get what he wanted.

He dragged in a ragged breath and another, forcing his body to relax so he didn’t squeeze the baby.

A baby.

Not mine.

He couldn’t even bring himself to look at it, though he’d been holding it for the last ten minutes.

“I’m right here,” he snapped, infuriated by the conversation that concerned his life, not theirs, and they all huddled around a computer with the boss, backs turned to him.

He was the star. The bull rider on the AEBR program cover. The highest earner the past three years—one of the top riders in the world. His merch was the top seller every flippin’ year. His meet-and-greets habitually sold out. He was one of the featured bull riders in a documentary. He’d had a small but recurring role on a western streaming hit last year.

Cash stood up, jostling Madelyn, but instead of her rolling off the arm of the chair and standing, she fell back into his lap.

“Erahhhugh.” She popped to her feet, elbowing his gut in the process. “Knock it offffff,” she said under her breath. Her onyx eyes shot sparks at him that he swore singed his skin. “Have some self-preservation.” She pushed him back into the chair. “Your future’s being decided.”

“Not without me, it’s not.” Despite his frustration, he kept his voice low, though not as calm as hers. He’d noticed that about her early on—no matter what was happening behind the scenes, she was never flustered.

He stood back up, automatically shifting the baby that had stopped crying but was mouthing his shirt, probably sliming it, but that was what dry cleaners were for. At least it was quiet and didn’t seem to have any teeth yet. How old was it? He still couldn’t wrap his head around the surreal moment in the arena. On Zoom, CEO Bruce shouted. Made demands. Everyone seemed in full appeasement mode.

“This has got to be some sort of a sick joke.” Cash rounded on Maddy who’d also risen. He liked how she stood up to him. Didn’t seem intimidated even though he rarely liked what she said.

“More like cosmic Karma.”

“Huh?”

“Why is it so hard for you to take responsibility for once?”

“Huh?” He felt like his eyes were going to pop out of his head and dent the walls of the small office. “This is somebody else’s baby.”

“You don’t know that,” she snapped. “Christ on a cracker with Cheez Whiz. You boink your
way across the USA annually. I’m surprised you haven’t had a dozen babies shoved in your arms at photo shoots. I actually had a plan for it,” she said as casually as if she was asking for everyone’s takeout order—something she often had to do.

He staggered back a step, shocked by her bottom-of-the-barrel opinion of him. He knew she didn’t like him, but he thought she’d respected his abilities.

The room descended into silence as if someone pulled a plug.

“Who’s that?” the CEO barked from the screen, and as one, all four AEBR tour execs turned
to look at Madelyn.

Cash heard Maddy gulp a swallow and a tinge of satisfaction wiggled through him. He was
not the only one in the hot seat now.

Hi Tule Readers,

I’ve been pretty excited this month for a couple of reasons—first I’ve always loved autumn, and November’s one of my favorite months because of all the vibrant colors. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and November often ushers in a lot of heavy rains so the trees get stripped of their brilliant hues all too quickly, but this year, November has been glorious, with some of our historic trees still clinging to their leaves. 

Second, my Southern Love Spells series is concluding with the release on November 20th of A Kiss of Southern Magic.  This is book four in the series that explores four sisters who move home to their small town in North Carolina, rediscover their closeness, unearth a few life changing family secrets and rebuild their lives and find love with a little push from a potentially magical heirloom recipe book. 

My heroine is pediatrician Sarah Maye, the eldest, who carries the mantel of responsibility gracefully. I saved her for last because she was the quietest of the sisters, and as I wrote the other books and she would enter and exit and participate, her story, her personality began to shine.  The premise of the book is that if one of the sisters makes a recipe from the Southern Love Spells book –exactly (and some of the directions are quite unusual), they will find their soul mate who will fall madly in love with them. Sarah resists using the book—of course she does, but then she’s curious about a new professor in town and takes a chance—making some scones and jam for him. But he shuts her down only to see her later that day when he brings in his young daughter for her childhood wellness exam.

This is the first full series I’ve written that focuses exclusively on sisters. I often focus on cowboy brothers or friends, and I’ve loved this journey so much, I hope to create a series with sisters again—it was one of my childhood fantasies.

“Doctor Maye, your next patient is here.”

Sarah held back her sigh. It was her fault she was so tired. She hadn’t been sleeping well since she’d moved into Grandma Millie’s stately and historic home following her death this past spring. Instead, she’d roam the three floors at night, combing through paperwork, boxing up and labeling various china patterns to share with her three sisters, cleaning, and trying hard to not think too much about the house’s future as well as hers.

Her nurse hovered in the doorway, her expression more than a little judgy.

“You work too hard.”

It was what she signed up for.

“And still the patients come.” Sarah smiled. She put her chai down without sipping it—that would only make her crave and miss it more. She also didn’t eat her sliced apple or protein bar.

“And that’s not really lunch,” Jeannie added. “It’s the first cold snap. Soon we’ll be overrun with snotty noses, hacking coughs and fevers. You gotta keep your strength up. Pace yourself.”

Jeannie wasn’t wrong. But most of the ailments Jeannie listed were due more to viruses or bacterial infections. Still. Sarah had lost weight in the past few months, when she’d already been slim.

And I’m still not happy.

The thought made her shake her head impatiently. Happiness was a choice. Her initial choice of husband hadn’t worked out so well, but now she was choosing differently. Making her own decisions.

But she still felt stuck. That word was a drumbeat in her brain.

Book club, Pilates and yoga were Band-Aids. The Monday night dinners with her sisters and their partners eased the loneliness that seemed to have taken up permanent residence in her bones but reminded her of everything she didn’t have.

“Are you feeling okay, Dr. Maye?”

Sarah had forgotten the young nurse was still there.

“Just woolgathering as my grandma Millie would say.”

Jeannie’s young, pale face creased in sympathy. “It’s hard to lose someone. My granny died the year I entered the nursing program. I still sometimes think about texting her when I see a squirrel doing something crazy or I see a bargain at the knitting and fabric store or the dogwoods come in bloom. She was crazy for gardening.”

Sarah smiled, grabbed her iPad and touched Jeannie’s shoulder as she passed out of her small office.

Sarah took the slim chart Jeannie held and knocked on the exam room with the picture of a purple dragon on it. She opened the door, polite, reassuring smile in place, but she stopped short.

“Oh.” For a silly moment, she nearly considered retreating.

“This isn’t awkward at all,” Professor Forster Luke Raimy said, smiling charmingly as he stood up from the light blue, padded chair and held out his hand to shake hers.

Sarah focused on her new patient, not the girl’s father.

She was a professional and had years of training in hiding her feelings—not just in her medical practice, but also as a widow and long before that as the eldest Maye daughter. Maye women were self-assured and composed no matter what crisis they faced. And a man who’d openly rejected a…friendly overture was hardly a crisis.

September has always been one of my favorite months.

End of summer and start of fall so it’s cooling down, but still days are longish and lots of sun to ease the transition. And since I love colors, I’m always watching for the first leaves to change color. My husband and I have a small vineyard in Oregon, and in the fall when the grape leaves turn yellow, red, purple and caramel brown, it’s so gorgeous. September also makes me think of school. I loved school as a kid and as a teacher so win there. When I was a mom and just starting writing, September meant I was going to get a bit more ‘free time’ to write though those minutes took a while to add up to scenes, chapters and a book.

September is also Marietta Montana’s Copper Mountain Rodeo. I am so fired up to have a publishing slot in September. Thank you, Tule! My writing friends this rodeo include Jeannie Watt, Nicole Flockton and Nan Reinhardt with her first cowboy romance ever. Rogue Cowboy is a reunion romance combined with a secret marriage of convenience—one of my favorite tropes coupled with a new one for me. So fun. It’s rather staggering to realize that this story marks my seventh romance set at the Copper Mountain Rodeo. I’ve had: Want Me, Cowboy, Cowboy Come Home, Marry Me, Please Cowboy (now The Montana Cowboy’s Duty!) and then my series Montana Cowboy Rodeo Brides with The Cowboy Says I Do, The Cowboy Challenge and Breaking the Cowboy Rules.

My heroine is Riley Telford. For anyone who has read any of my Marietta set books, Riley is the only daughter of Sarah and Taryn Telford, a legacy ranching family near the foothills of Copper Mountain—a bit south of Jane Porter’s fabled Wyatt ranch. Riley has appeared in many of my books. She once dreamed of stardom as a country singer and went to LA to fulfill her dreams, but when she was introduced in her brother Boone Telford’s book Cowboy Come Home, she was back on the ranch, working with her mother training and breeding horses and wouldn’t talk about LA or music. I knew eventually I wanted to pair her up with a cowboy so she could have her HEA, but also explore what it feels like to have a huge, driving dream, but then something happens, the dream craters, or crashes and burns and then what? How does she pivot and can she truly find happiness and acceptance and embrace a new dream?

This theme felt particularly poignant to me as I was writing as my daughter graduated from college and completed a year-long scholarship-funded study of language and culture in India last year, and now she’s finished and the job that she had lined up and all the connections she had evaporated and so she, like Riley, will have to pivot. Because this is real life, she’s finding her way with grace and determination and research, only solo—no handsome, former Special Forces Soldier and Texas cowboy by her side trying to woo her and make their marriage real.

Yeah, fiction is always more fun.

I always love popping in to blog—it makes me feel rather literary.

Yes, I have a book coming out in July, and I believe that after thirty books, this is my first book that celebrates summer. It’s wild that it’s taken this long as—despite the heat—is my favorite season. Maybe that’s a remnant of my childhood where I perceived summer as being more carefree, but also when I was a mom with young children, I loved summer because there were so many fun day camps and activities our kids could try and maybe find a new passion, or we could indulge in chill out mornings at home, scavenger hunts or playdates in parks or along Lake Washington. And the best? Outdoor summer concerts with other families. We’d pack picnics, bring fun outdoor toys like bubbles, balloons or nerf planes or rockets for the kids to chase while we enjoyed the music and magical atmosphere.

What are some of your favorite summer activities—either alone or as a family or with friends?

This summer I had an amazing opportunity with my family to visit our son who is studying in Helsinki, Finland. We were there during the Summer Solstice. The Nordic countries go all out during the solstice, and we enjoyed a celebration in a park near the Helsinki Harbor. Summer (and winter) Solstice is a big deal, like the fourth of July in the US, although it’s celebrating the sun, light and nature.

A Whisper of Summer Magic is book three in my Southern Love Spells series. It features attorney Meghan Maye in a forced proximity, secret crush, opposites attract, next door neighbor and age difference romance with a very hot, very fun and flirty fire fighter. They knew each other as kids, but Jackson’s all grown up now and determined to seize his chance to win Meghan’s heart, even if it takes using her family’s heirloom cookbook that may or may not have a touch of magic.

I hope you get a chance to read it. My favorite place to read in the summer is in my front yard on our red Adirondack chairs while our dog Chai runs free in the front yard.

Before I head out, I wanted to share a variation on my Summer Sparkle. This drink can be a mocktail or a cocktail, depending on your mood. I enjoy cutting up a variety of fruit—mango, watermelon and berries and then splashing my favorite flavor of sparkling water—grapefruit or blackberry. And yes, sometimes I will also add a dash or Roshni rose (have to add a little plug for our small family vineyard) but sparkling wine or a dash or liqueur adds a bit of pizzazz (my favorites are cassis or grand marnier.)
