Unforgettable Cowboy introduces Tule’s 2025 Copper Mountain Rodeo series, MONTANA RODEO COWBOYS. The other books in the series are: Headstrong Cowboy by Nicole Flockton, Rogue Cowboy by Sinclair Jayne, and Forever Cowboy by Nan Reinhardt. This is my third time writing for the annual Copper Mountain Rodeo series and I’m thrilled to lead it off. 

I love rodeos, particularly the rough stock events, and I’m fortunate to live in a place where it’s possible to see what goes on behind the chutes as the cowboy contestants prepare for their rides. 

So, what does go on prior to the rough stock events? It’s surprisingly quiet.

There’s a lot of head time, as the cowboys mentally prepare themselves and their gear for their event.

There’s also practice time. A cowboy will sometimes set his rig on the ground and go through the ride in his head.

 

The contestants saddle their own broncs. This involves getting the saddle set and the cinch fastened. They use a long wire device to get the cinch under the horse’s belly.

Then comes my favorite part, where the boots go into the air as they lean over the bronc to fasten the rigging.

As you can see, no one seems to find any of this proceeding particularly dramatic. This is one of my favorite photos—cowboys chilling with a pair of boots.

There are also women bronc riders at our rodeo.

As their ride gets closer, the cowboy may continue to stretch and warm up. 

Or they may just hang out. 

After the event, when the chutes are empty, the cowboys and friends take advantage of the area for a birds-eye view of the rest of the rodeo.

Jeannie Watt shares a Swedish fruit cookie recipe from her Great-Great-Aunt Frances (it’s also her husband’s favorite Christmas cookie)

Delicious recipes straight from the kitchens of your favorite Tule authors.

This recipe is from my Great-Great-Aunt Frances, who was born in Sweden in the late 1800s. Her fruit cookie recipe has been handed down through the family and I have a hand-written copy from the 1960s.
My mom is the official Frances cookie maker, and every year she makes them and mails them to the special people in her life. They are, hands down, my husband’s favorite cookie, but he only gets them at Christmas. They might look a little boring, but don’t judge this cookie by its cover.
Unfortunately, there is no amount given for the fruit, so we just eyeball it, making certain that there’s enough cookie dough to actually make a cookie.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
3 eggs
3 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda in 1 tablespoon boiling water
Candied fruit – the kind that’s used in fruit cakes, chopped fine. I’m guessing about 1 cup
Maraschino cherries
1 cup of chopped nuts (optional)
Chopped dates (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350. Cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs and then stir the soda water. Add the flour a little at a time as you mix. Add in the fruit, nuts and dates to your taste without overloading. Chill for two days to allow the fruit to soften. Drop in spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Top each cookie with half a. Bake 12-15 minutes.

Jeannie Watt stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the second book in the Return to Keller Ranch series, Her Cowboy Baby Daddy!

Where did you get the inspiration for Her Cowboy Baby Daddy?

There are a lot of babies being born in my family right now. My first granddaughter is approaching the age of two this spring, I was just blessed with two great-nieces,  and I have another grandchild due shortly. Also, like the heroine, I was told in my early twenties that I may not be able to have children—thankfully the doctor was wrong—and I know that ticking clock feeling. There hits a point where you feel like you have to either resign yourself or act. Hayley has hit this point. 

 

If you could spend the day with Spence or Hayley, who would you choose and what would you do?

I would spend the day with Hayley, working in her greenhouse, tending the plants and harvesting fresh vegetables. That said, hanging with Spence for the day would be a hoot. We’d probably ride fence or something. He’s a classic middle child, connects well with other people, and would be easy to spend the day with.

 

This isn’t your first time writing a story set in Marietta, Montana. Can you share how you manage to write stories in a town with so many different authors writing their own characters? Will we see any familiar faces? 

There aren’t many familiar faces in this Keller story, but there will be in the next in the series, Cowboy Meets Cowgirl. The way I keep things straight in the Marietta stories is by consulting A Book Girl’s Guide to Marietta, reading stories set in Marietta and, most importantly, depending on my editor, Sinclair Jayne, who also writes in the Marietta world. Sinclair really knows Marietta. It’s a wonderful community, and I love being part of it.

 

What 3 words would you use to describe Spence and Hayley so readers can get to know them better?

Spence—nomad, protector, easy going. Hayley—determined, caregiver, battling shyness.

 

What are you currently reading? 

I just started Cupid, Cupcakes and Carnage by Kaz Delaney, one of our Tule Mystery authors. I’m so excited to dive into this world and lose myself with some vicarious baking and crime solving. Next in the queue is A Santa Stabbing by Geri Krotow. I mainly read mysteries while I’m writing romance. It gives my brain a break and I love that Tule has a mystery imprint.
