A KISS FROM THE PAST: Release day blog post featuring Kelly Cain!

What if you found out you’re adopted?

Thank you so much to the Tule blog for allowing me to write about the backstory behind my new release, A Kiss From the Past. This story is very personal to me because, like Nichelle, I found out I was adopted later in life. Much later for me than Nichelle, and I didn’t inherit a pricey heirloom ring, but the outcome is mostly the same.

It’s so interesting to look back now at how everything unfolded: a home DNA test just for fun, being stumped why my ethnicity results didn’t align with what I knew about my family, not matching to any family members I knew had taken the test, putting together that my father wasn’t my father, and finally realizing I’m adopted.

Nichelle is fortunate enough to be able to talk it out with the only parents she’d ever known, but I’m left to guess why my parents made the decision to keep the truth from me all those years. There may be a little bit of role playing involved with Nichelle and her parents, me wondering what those conversations may have been like, but in the end, I’ve accepted my parents made the decisions they thought were right. They certainly loved me enough that I never had a clue of my adoption.

The newfound family of Nichelle’s mirrors my own. I grew up mostly as an only child but now have siblings. Siblings! It’s been the most positive result of all of this, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I only wish I had more time with them, but we’re making up for what we’ve missed.

So, if you read A Kiss From the Past, keep me in mind as Nichelle goes on her journey, but have fun with her budding relationship with the buttoned-up Clark. That part is completely fictionalized from my imagination.

And if you ever decide to take one of those home DNA tests for fun…I hope you’re prepared there may be a surprise waiting for you on the other side.

TASTES SO SWEET: Release day blog post featuring Kelly Cain!

Tastes So Sweet is a Love Letter to Austin

I have to say, there’s a sudden sadness that comes with the end of a series. At least for me and The Everheart Brothers of Texas, but I’m also excited for the next series coming from Tule next year. So, as they say, this ending is bittersweet. I’m finishing off the series with middle brother, Weston, and his love, Ryan.

Although Ryan and Weston spend a lot of time in the restaurant, they do their fair amount of exploring when Everheart Bar and Fine Dining is closed or on joint off days. I wanted to hand Austin to readers in all its glorious quirkiness—the city motto is Keep Austin Weird after all. So, I’ll take you through a few of the places Ryan, Weston, the cousins, and architect bros visit and enjoy their intertwined lives.

The first location outside the restaurant is the entire gang meeting at Lady Bird Lake. The “lake” is actually a reservoir, part of the Colorado River. It was initially created as a cooling pond for a power plant but is only used recreationally now. And let me tell you, sitting right near downtown Austin, it is a recreational centerpiece for city residents and visitors. There’s a nice walking trail circling the lake’s perimeter where you can exercise or people-watch folks as they paddle board and kayak.

In the book, there’s a scene devoted to the event Sound and Cinema. I’ve enjoyed many an evening sitting in the grass under the stars outside the Long Center bordering the river. A local band plays (honestly, you can’t go anywhere in Austin without catching a local band performing—after all, it’s the live music capital of the world!) before everyone settles in for an outdoor movie projected on a big screen. Local cuisine is featured in various food trucks along with plenty of beer and spirits trucks, too. The event is free; however, the food and drinks aren’t. The last movie I saw there was The Goonies while eating a lobster roll.

I can’t take credit for the next great find. My sisters came to visit a few weeks before I properly moved to Austin. I drove over from Houston, and we met there and explored the city together. As a donut fiend, my youngest sister recommended Gourdough’s Public House for their specialty hamburgers made with donut buns. Yes—they really make these donut-bun burgers. I’m not kidding.

What can I say about Hippie Hollow? It boasts the clearest water around. Oh, and it’s clothing optional.

We end the book at Jo’s Coffee Shop. Weston does a great job giving you the history behind the beloved Austin mural on the side of the building, so I’ll let you read the book to find out what it’s all about and the surprising reason they end up there. We’re venturing into spoiler-y territory.

There’re at least five other locations I’d love to highlight, but I’m quickly running out of room. Just pick up TASTES SO SWEET and you’ll get the full gamut. Have I convinced you to visit Austin yet?

A TASTY DISH: Release day blog post featuring Kelly Cain!

It probably goes without saying, but I’m super excited A TASTY DISH is out in the world. As authors, sometimes it’s difficult to answer (read: remember) how an idea came to us especially when a book was written a year or two before and other stories have been written since. But I remember writing the beginning of this book like it was yesterday. The idea, and the main character, Kasi Blythewood, sprang from my mind fully formed. Her sassy, and blunt, countenance rolled from my fingers even though I knew these complicated characters can sometimes be tagged as unlikeable. But for oldest Everheart brother, Declan, his love needed to be strong willed and not easily won over. Because Declan has layers, and if you don’t take the time to peel them, he’ll take the surface way out of any relationship he enters.

The book opens with Kasi trying to gain access to the backstage of a band playing during South by Southwest (SXSW or South By), a yearly conference/festival showcasing music, films, and interactive media held in Austin, TX. Kasi needs financing for her indie series about global cuisine and the making of. She pitches it as Anthony Bourdain meets Full Tilt Boogie. A behind-the-scenes look at documentary filmmaking of a culinary type meeting local chefs and the ingredients that inform their cooking.

I live in Austin but attended South By the first time a few years before I moved here. The festival is centered downtown around the historical district. My friends and I marveled as we walked the famed 6th street, taking in the competing music spilling from different venues as well as street performers. An Irish street band played traditional music on one corner while a famous hip hop band played from an open venue across the street. It sounds overwhelming, but I promise you it’s an experience not to be missed.

Everheart Bar and Fine Dining is set right off 6th street and Declan is always game for an adventure, whether local or international. Luckily for Kasi, he and his father are making some deals of their own in that backstage area she’s so desperate to get into. Declan’s happy to help, sizing up and down the curvy beauty, and not only gets Kasi backstage, but the funding she’s been seeking.

I hope you’ll check out A TASTY DISH and maybe visit South By if you haven’t already. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

AN ACQUIRED TASTE: Release day blog post featuring Kelly Cain

I’m so excited to share An Acquired Taste with the world and to be here on the Tule blog today!

As the blurb indicates, there’s a rivalry between two families that goes back to when the parents were young but really manifests during a televised cooking competition. What you may not know is there are real recipes included within.

The rival families are from Austin which is where my own mother grew up. I started cooking full dishes with my mom when I was about eight although she’d let me help here and there before. One Mother’s Day, my dad and brother (who was in his 20s at the time) forgot. As you can imagine, my amazing mother was quite upset so I offered to cook a chicken and dressing dinner. Ha, as if I could do that. That’s one of my fondest memories and I’m sure my role was limited, but we really put together a great meal. Just the two of us.

A mishap by my dad and brother (one they never repeated, believe me) sparked my love of cooking, but my mom really nurtured my interest. I hope the love comes through on the pages of An Acquired Taste as well as the main character’s, Rowan, love and loyalty to her own mother. There’s great southern cooking included and the recipes, many passed down from my mom, to support their effort.

Selective Focus Photography of Pasta With Tomato and Basil

As for the love interest, Knox, he comes from a family of chefs. His dad is a Michelin-star chef and all three sons work in his restaurant. Knox’s passion is pasta, but his dad doesn’t serve a single pasta dish in his restaurant. During the competition though, pasta plays an integral role in both the story and the contest. You won’t find any high-brow pasta recipes in An Acquired Taste though but there is one for fried spaghetti. I’ve yet to find someone who’s heard of this so I’m beginning to think my dad may have made this one up. It was a family favorite growing up.

There’s plenty of love in An Acquired Taste, including the food.
