Tule author Sinclair Jayne talks “A Little Christmas Magic” and starts off her new Southern Born series for Tule. (plus, a giveaway!)

There is a small, festive house near mine in Oregon that I drive by most days. The people who live there leave their Christmas decorations up until summer. I’m not just talking about a few lights. No. They are all in. Large ornaments dangle long, bright and colorful from an oak tree, lights are strung through several maples and large blowup Christmas art dominates their lawn—a teddy bear the size of a tractor, a smiling snowman and of course, Rudolph. Everyone knows this house, and though I have never met the couple who lives there, I think they must be perennially cheerful and rockin’ a huge electric bill.

I am thinking about the celebratory couple and their house today as I have my first Christmas novella being reissued this month as part of the kick-off to my Southern Love Spells series. A Taste of Christmas Magic first appeared in November as part of the A Southern Christmas anthology with the fabulous Susan Sands and Laurie Beach. We were excited to appear together in a multi-author collection, but each of us knew our anthology would split apart, and we’d take our story to be a part of (or in my case, launch) a new series. My new cover is so gorgeous I’m not even sorry to be heading out on my own now.

I’m excited about my upcoming series, Southern Love Spells for a lot of reasons. First, most of my books are set in the west—Montana, Texas, Oregon. The South just has a different vibe—the weather, history, architecture, manners, food and horticulture all create a tangible mood I can embrace and sink into. Second, most of my series feature brothers. Southern Love Spells features four sisters. Not a broody cowboy and sexily appealing tipped cowboy hat in sight. I always wanted a sister, and so this was an opportunity to indulge in a life long wish. The series explores sister dynamics, personal transformation, self-discovery and a dark family secret that winds through all four books.

I LOOSELY based my youngest heroine in this story, Chloe, on my daughter. She is a free spirit, a little fey, notes the unexpected and loves to sing. The rest is pure imagination. The touch of magic in each book—a mysterious heirloom recipe book continues to pop in and out of each sister’s life and while Chloe—like much in her life—embraces the discovery, I really enjoy plotting out how each sister responds to the book and what it reveals about each of them.

I have had a few weird discoveries or questionable events, which is one of the inspirations for this book of a loving, but slightly drifting family that finds their way back to each other even as they discover a secret about themselves and their past, and yes, of course they find love. I’ve just returned from Hawaii from a Tule author and team retreat—and yes, it was a lot of work (and fun), so I have a little bit of island swag, a $10 Starbucks card along with a print copy of A Touch of Christmas Magic (when they arrive) for two lucky responders who answer the question. You can DM me or email [email protected].

Have you ever discovered an unexpected family heirloom or picture or letter that created more questions than it answered? What was it and how did it impact you or your family?

Sinclair Jayne shares her favorite Biscotti recipe that’s perfect for that anytime treat!

Delicious recipes straight from the kitchens of your favorite Tule authors.

There is so much to love (and not just that it’s hard to mess up) about biscotti. I love that it’s a dunking cookie. Seriously dunking cookie—coffee, hot chocolate, milk, mulled wine….It’s crunchy and with the basic ingredients you can PLAY around. Go with nuts and chocolate or citrus zest or savory, or dried fruit. You can play around so many ways—a bit like writing.

Some of my favorites are lemon with lavender or anise, cinnamon, and grand marnier soaked almond slivers or cardamom and fennel or rosemary or chocolate and black walnuts and then dipped after baked and cools into melted white chocolate (spiked if you dare).

Ingredients:

2.5 cups of flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinn
1/2 tsp sea salt
Whisk
4 eggs
3/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown
1 tsp your choice of extract

Directions:

  1. Combine into a dough
  2. Divide in half
  3. Create two equal flat loaves
  4. Bake on a silpat or parchment paper at 350 for 15 minutes until golden
  5. Cool, cut at an angle with a serrated bread knife into 1/2 inch thick cookies, lay flat and bake another ten minutes.

A Southern Christmas by Susan Sands, Sinclair Jayne, Laurie Beach

Unwrap three Southern Christmas stories in one–Merry Christmas!

A Georgia Christmas by Susan Sands

Christmas in Moonshine, Georgia is salon owner Merilee Bell’s favorite season. She might still be single in her mid- thirties, but she’s finally content, proud of her business and herself as she’s made strides to make peace with her past. And then just at closing time, a tall, dark and handsome new deputy enters her shop, and everything seems poised to change.

Weeks before Christmas, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent, Randy Slade arrives in Moonshine posing as Moonshine’s newest deputy for an undercover sting to catch a group of high-tech property thieves. Only the sheriff is aware of his true identity, but from the moment he meets Merilee, who trades a haircut for free parking, he’s smitten by her smile and warm, friendly manner. Unfortunately, she also has a rental property perfectly suited for his undercover operation.

Randy doesn’t want to lie, but he has a duty to keep citizens safe, including Merilee. Can he do his job and still celebrate a small town southern Christmas, and maybe more with his dream girl?

A Taste of Christmas Magic by Sinclair Jayne

This Christmas, he just might believe in a little magic…

Rustin Wildish furiously left Belmont North Carolina as a teen to make his reputation in the culinary world. Over twelve years later, he’s back in the town that where the founding family of Mayes once branded him a worthless bad boy.  Intent to show them how wrong they were, he buys the local diner—considered an institution—from his former mentor and boss, Miss Millie Maye and transforms. Success will be his revenge as the Maye’s and other ‘upstanding families,’ are forced to eat their words and so much more. But then the youngest Maye daughter asks him for help, and he inexplicably says yes.

This Christmas Chloe Maye has finally bitten off far more than she can chew. She’s agreed to organize The Maye family’s annual fundraiser–a movable feast where historic downtown homes are open to the public and each serve one course of a lavish meal. Chloe can’t cook so armed with a historic handwritten cookbook she mysteriously finds in a mini library outside her Grandma Millie’s home, she approaches Rustin for help. She’s always crushed on him and is thrilled he’s back.

But when Rustin, who ignored her their entire childhood, takes a bite from the meal she cooks under his exacting supervision, the unthinkable happens. He falls head over heels in love…

A Saltwater Christmas by Laurie Beach

Christmas is a time of miracles–but is it magical enough to change a person’s mind?

Allie Westley’s Christmas will be a bit different this year. She’s taken a big step to move away from Nashville to Goose Island, South Carolina, to pursue her dream of becoming a wine enologist, and she’s not tripping over this chance to make a break from her family, either. She’ll spend December 25 doing her own thing. Although the beach might be cold, it is the perfect place for new traditions.

But she was also counting on her new roommate, Sam Clare, to be a sister she never had. Instead, Sam is an ex-military man now working as a paramedic. Even his dog, Buttercup, is part wolf. Yet he turns out to be the most understanding person in her new world, despite the fact that she’s declared him her enemy.

As the season’s activities bring them together, Allie uncovers several details her new circle of friends weren’t forthcoming about. But will the secret Sam’s keeping break her heart or mend what she didn’t realize was broken?

Wrapped Up in Christmas by Janice Lynn

This Christmas brings an unexpected gift…

For years, quilt making has been Sarah Smith’s creative outlet. Former Army Ranger Bodie Lewis knows he’s lucky to be alive. But he’s struggling to adjust to civilian life after his injury and mired in survivor guilt. Christmas in Crickley Creek by Laurie Beach

She doesn’t need gifts under the tree this holiday season. What she longs for is a second chance.

Emma Shea Abernathy is fully aware of her social role: marry well, live extravagantly, and, most of all, exhibit perfection. And it started with saying “I do” to future governor Trent Broadway.

With her carefully crafted life in full swing, she knows she’s made a big mistake. Leaving it all behind, she hides out at her great-grandmother’s beach house in Crickley Creek. There, she discovers a secret room containing a well-preserved 1920s Prohibition speakeasy–and some surprising information about the women in her family. This leads to a new plan: to become a woman who acts contrary to what is expected. In other words, a Firefly Girl.

The problem is, no one else embraces her change of heart, especially her first love, Scruggs Willingham III. He still refuses to forgive her for marrying someone else. Despite the olive branches she extends throughout Crickley Creek, it appears she’ll spend Christmas alone.

Until a rare Christmas snow brings the one miracle she needs: the freedom to accept herself.

Local mechanic Nick Landry is the most normal person she’s met so far, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s also handsome and friendly. Just as Allison starts to wonder if she’s finally found a new home, family, and a man to love, she discovers that Nick—just like both sides of her family—has been keeping his own secrets.

Sinclair Jayne shares that romance is not just about falling in love, it’s about facing what you want to avoid most. (PLUS a giveaway!)

Writing Christmas with the Texas Cowboy was a total blast to the past for me.  Over five years ago, I traveled to Texas Hill Country with the Tule team and several Tule authors to research the Hill Country so that Tule could create a new town in Texas, similar to what the Tule team and so many authors over the years created and developed Marietta, Montana. We stayed in a VRBO in Fredericksburg and enjoyed several days of shopping, picture taking, researching, wine tasting, visiting tourist sites, including a historic dance hall.

And we chatted, planned and plotted to not only create the bones of Last stand, but also the history, businesses and legacy ranches and family. We also brainstormed a catastrophic event that the initial group of authors would include in their first series to layer in some cohesion between very different series.

Traveling and working with so many talented authors was so much fun and inspiring. I would love to be a part of more multi-author series. All that creativity and collaboration feeds my soul and pushes me to UP my game.

I created a rather dysfunctional ranching family—The Wolfs–that had been torn apart by tragedy, secrets, scandal and addiction (that’s me—a ray of sunshine, always in fiction). My goal was to create three estranged brothers and over the course of the series, have them reconnect, come to terms with their past, and of course, boot some of their baggage as they met their match in a heroine. The first book A Son for the Texas Cowboy was of course a reunion romance—my favorite trope. But I realized as I started crafting the stories for the other two brothers—August and Anders—that reunion romances worked beautifully as they are so trapped by their past and their legacy. Falling in love forces them into the light (even as they fight it, or course).

I’ve been missing my Texas Wolf Brothers. I wanted to revisit them. Check in. See how they are building their own legacy and families. As I was crafting my Coyote Cowboys of Montana series in Marietta, I had a brainstorm. I had a new team leader of the group, and if I made him a secret Wolf Brother, I could send him back to Texas at the end of the Coyote Cowboy of Montana series.

This is only one of the many reasons I LOVE being a writer. I can build my own world and family and friends. So meet Wolf Conte, who knows that he has three half-brothers thriving in Texas he’s been avoiding for decades. The LAST thing the independent Wolf—a Special Forces soldier, not a cowboy–wants to do is go home, meet his secret family, be reminded of all he craved but never had, face the ghosts of his own past and the barrel racer he left behind.

Too bad Wolf. I sent you home. The trick with writing romance, is that it’s not about falling in love. It’s about being forced to face the ONE thing (or things) your hero or heroine want to avoid. And while your H or H or both are dancing around trying to cope and achieve their goals and move on, they are inexorably falling in love, even as they do their best to slip the rope and run in the opposite direction. Merry Christmas Wolf and Taya.

When sending my hero home to Last Stand Texas, I googled annual weather reports and pondered temperature averages. Not particularly snowy though local weather forecasters try to play it up for drama. Most of my Christmas books have been set in Montana, southern Oregon’s Siskiyous, or the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee—lots of snow so I was a little worried about how to create a true Christmas atmosphere. When you are reading a Christmas romance, does it need to have snow to feel fully authentic? Are you disappointed if a Christmas romance is set in a warmer climate.

The Cowboy’s Claim: Author Sinclair Jayne’s finale to her Coyote Cowboys of Montana series

Hi Tuligans and Marietta fans,

I am so fired up that The Cowboy’s Claim—the fifth and last book in The Coyote Cowboys of Montana series will release on June 18th. I first roughed out the idea four years ago just as the pandemic started. I had two ideas—Special Forces soldiers peeling off to Marietta, Montana to do a good deed or make amends for a fallen friend, and the second idea was rodeo cowboy cousins who play a bride game during the Copper Mountain Rodeo to help their granddad. I brainstormed with my friend, Rusty Keller, March, 2020 at an Oregon beach just as the world started shuttering. It was such a weird and scary time that Tule suggested running with the fun, sexy rather mad cap idea of the Montana Rodeo Brides. I have to admit that series was fun, but organizing all the details and scenes and continuity was challenging because all three books happen simultaneously during the Copper Mountain Rodeo.

But I couldn’t let go of my Coyote Cowboys. It took a few years to write the series, and I have loved this group of heroes—their fierce loyalty to each other and determination to honor their friend even as the task they face is the last thing they want to do.

In The Cowboy’s Claim Calhoun Miller is tasked with solving a mystery in Marietta—something his fallen friend, Jace McBride, saw happen as a child. Calhoun arrives in Marietta, with little information, but he thrives on challenge. A sexy, anonymous hook up at Grey’s Saloon and the Graff Hotel is meant to blow off some steam before he starts his investigation. Instead, it leads him in a direction he never anticipated.

Sinclair Jayne's The Cowboy's Word book cover with cowboy leaning on fence.I was a little nervous writing this story because while it is utterly a romance, it also contains a central mystery. I have never written a mystery though I love to read them. I had been layering in little pieces of the mystery in each book—just a bread crumb in The Cowboy’s Word, a few more in Marry Me Please, Cowboy, The Cowboy’s Christmas Homecoming and The Cowboy Charm. But with the final book, I had to solve the sucker. And because I have a tendency to give in to impulse and inspiration, I make a lot of changes as I write. I knew it would be easy to derail the narrative. I think my very focused heroine, traveling doctor, Jory Quinn, who has always defied expectations, helped keep me organized and grounded.

Giving Jory and Calhoun a HEA in the most improbable circumstances, gave me such joy that I often had to get up from my desk and hop and dance around the last quarter of the book. Everything was coming together and yeah, bragging here, it felt more effortless than I had imagined it would.

I hope you get a chance to read The Cowboy’s Claim. I enjoyed writing the series so much that I took one of the characters who appears in the beginning of each book, Wolf Conte, and gave him a backstory and his own vow to Jace that will bring him to Last Stand Texas, another Tule town, this Christmas. Keep an eye out for Christmas with the Texas Cowboy coming this October!

For a fun GIVEAWAY, a question I have as I’ve been mulling ideas for future series—do you have a favorite hook or a fantasy profession—cowboy, soldier, doctor, entrepreneur, athlete, royal, celebrity, tycoon, vampire, shifter? Is there a job or profession you’ve always fantasized about? Comment below and we’ll pick one winner to receive a fun prize pack of goodies!

Thanks for your time and happy reading as we slide into summer.

“Write What You’re Dealing With” – A Message from Tule Author Sinclair Jayne on Her Recent Release (Plus a GIVEAWAY!)

Writing The Cowboy Charm was cathartic for me. What I didn’t expect was that it would be so much fun. I had had a couple of tough years struggling with the combination that I think so many of us go through at some point—balancing taking care of my mom’s declining health with launching my kids who were both in college but not far from my mind, while still trying to build my career and emotionally support my husband whose career was in a market flux. I was at a writing retreat—planning out book two in my Coyote Cowboys of Montana series (having written books one and three and starting to think about book four) and my friend Jane Porter said ‘write what you’re dealing with—make it work for you.’

So I did. I didn’t want The Cowboy Charm to be dark. I wanted it to be realistic and explore a valley in life, and yet focus on walking up the next hill. There will inevitably be times when we are grieving the loss of a loved one, a job, a friend, the future or opportunity we thought we’d have, and yet, if we keep going forward, acknowledging the loss or disappointment, we will find a shaft of light and a door opening.

When an author has a slightly heavier theme or a hero or heroine who is struggling, it’s important to find the light and laughter, and so Ryder Lea was born. I love my soldier/cowboy. He could be bitter or angry or shut down, but he’s not at all. He’s mister all in, hand raised, I got this. Usually in a group, that’s me, so in a way I was putting pieces of myself in a hero—not something I feel like I’ve done before. And yet he’s so much more—physical, eager, loyal and goal oriented. Totally ‘a dish’—something my grandma used to say, although I am not sure what meal he would be—lasagna comes to mind (because I love it and it’s tasty).

The story is set—of course—in my favorite town of Marietta, Montana. In January. Brrrrrr, but Ryder brings the heat and sunlight and ‘can do’ attitude. Funny secret about that (shshshsh). I chose his last name—Lea—because it’s the last name of my niece, Reeva’s husband, John. Before I met John, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law kept saying he was a ‘can do guy.’ That’s all they’d say about him. Over and over, and other people who met him in the family said the same thing. Nothing else. And my husband and I just thought that was hilarious—like all the Sawhney’s were brainwashed (or non verbal).  We just had so much fun playing with that concept, and of course our daughter—16 at the time John and Reeva were getting married in a ginormous slap down Indian wedding (featured in my Misguided Masala Matchmaker series) joined in on the fun.

But, just like John (I can think of dozens of fabulous adjectives for), Ryder is so much more than ‘can-do,’ and he and Edison, my heroine, complement each other. He warms and heals her, and she in turn boosts him up as she sees all of his goodness and possibility. I loved the challenge of taking two characters who’d had some tragedies in their lives, but were determined to keep living, meet in improbable circumstances in the dead middle of winter, and yet find such joy and hope and of course an HEA that even made me cry a little.

Hope you enjoy! Interested in more? Find me at https://sinclairjayne.com and sign up for my newsletter! Also, as a thank you for reading this, one lucky person picked from the comments on this post, will win a signed print copy of The Cowboy Charm and some Marietta and Sinclair Jayne swag!
