Kyra Jacobs talks latest in The Miles of Montana series with Norah and Rhett’s story.

Hello, everyone! I hope the year is off to a great start and you’re surviving whatever Mother Nature has sent your way. Here in Northeastern Indiana, it’s been snowier than usual. And while the snow-covered landscape is pretty, I’m itching for spring to roll in any day now.

Crazy weather aside, this time of year mirror’s the beginning timeline for my February book release—THE RODEO COWBOY’S REDEMPTION. Galentine’s Day (the day before Valentine’s Day) is when we first see Norah and Rhett’s worlds collide (literally) and frustrations flare. And, oh, did I have fun writing these two!

Stubborn? Check.

Independent? Check Check.

Sexual Tension? Check, Check, and Check.

Where these two don’t immediately match is their relationships with their families. The Miles family is close-knit and supportive, even protective at times. They’re the kind of family Rhett Foster only wishes he had as a kid. And honestly, being Jaxon Miles’s best friend, he did spend a good deal of time around them growing up. But his own family life is a bit messier, and the relationship with his dad…tenuous at best.

Which made falling for Norah Miles that much more complicated. There are rules in this new, post-rodeo reality that must be followed and lines not to cross. Just like “there’s no crying in baseball”, Rhett’s father is adamant that “though shalt not date our client”. But when the heart gets involved, sometimes hard and fast rules get stretched… 

In addition to guiding this couple through their family and relationship redemption minefields, I also enjoyed incorporating the cabin renovations project into the story. I was on the tail end of a “refresh” project in my own home, and could relate to Norah agonizing over colors and textures, themes and decorations. When you put in all that time and work, you want to cross the finish line with a “product” to be proud of. The way my brain works, there is usually a LOT of contemplation over major (and sometimes even minor) design changes. I’ve been known to take months to settle on a new paint color for rooms in my house. LOL

So far, @myorangeeditor has approved of all the interior design changes. Though, he’d prefer I spend less time helping install LVP or backsplash tile and more time at my computer desk…

Hello everyone!

Kyra Jacobs, here, trying to contain my excitement during release week for my latest contemporary romance novel, ONCE UPON A SUMMER NIGHT. This is the final book in my Bourbon Falls series, each of which put a modern twist on a classic fairy tale. For SUMMER NIGHT, Cinderella was the featured retelling. And, yes, Hannah Brooks is finally coming home. The question that remains is: will she stay?

I honestly couldn’t wait to write SUMMER NIGHT, as it was “talking to me” from the start. So when we decided to place it at the end of the series, I had to put those characters and their journeys to Happily Ever After on hold. And though this story was on my mind from the get-go, ironically, it proved to be the hardest book of the series to write.

Because everything had to be perfect.

Hannah’s return. Noah. Chase. The Brooks family. The town. The Brooks sisters. Mrs. Harper and her sisters. (Come on, you know you loved them!) The bookstore. Everything.

After one painful first draft, and some empathetic coaching from my amazing editor, I finally got out of my own way and let the story write itself. And let me tell you, when a story brings an author to tears for all the right reasons multiple times in a story, that’s when we know we got it right. (Happy tears, mostly. You’ll have to trust me on that. )

Plot struggles aside, it was second nature writing about summertime in Indiana. I has so much fun writing about the things that I did in my childhood and as the mother of two boys. 

Baseball. Playing catch with a Nerf football. Cookouts. Pet goldfish. Going to the park. Swimming in ponds. Dealing with stormy weather. Dessert. Neighbors.

Family.

In book three, we get to take a deeper look into the main Brooks family. You may even be surprised by a few things you learn about them. But those past experiences had to be there to make the Brooks family come to life. Because all families face trials and tribulations. Difficult times shape us, force us to either grow and thrive or shrink and wither. Sometimes, results come quickly. Other times, they do not.

But that’s the beauty of the resilient human spirit—it’s in our DNA to keep trying. To overcome. To love.

Thankfully, no fairy godmothers or glass slippers required.

Hello everyone!

Kyra Jacobs, here, to share some “behind the scenes” tidbits from my latest sweet romance novel, ONCE UPON A BEAST. This is the first book in my Bourbon Falls series, with each book taking a fresh, modern spin on a classic fairy tale. As the title suggests, Beauty and the Beast is the featured retelling to kick off this new series. And Isaac Manning was certainly a fun “beast” to write.

Actually, Isaac’s deaf rescue bulldog Louie is the only real beast in this story, and he’s too adorable to be called a beast. (; If you’ve followed me on social media, you’ve likely seen a post or two about bulldogs. Though I’ve yet to own one (bucket list item), I’m a huge fan. I mean, how can you resist that scrunched face and wiggly butt? The Louie in this tale was loosely based on a friend’s bulldog named Louis and he’s built like a mini tank.

In the story, Louie loves Delaney Brooks, the first stranger he’s allowed to meet in their new hometown of Bourbon Falls, Indiana. Del is the confident landscape designer and greenhouse co-owner (whose niece crashes into Isaac’s landscaping at the start of the book to kick off our story) who stops by to cut down a mangled, overgrown arborvitae. I have a few overgrown arborvitaes of my own, but they’re a great source of afternoon shade so I plan to leave them alone as long as possible.

Also, for the record, I’m terrible at both pronouncing and typing the word arborvitae. LOL

The human hero of our story is Isaac Manning, who is holed up in Bourbon Falls, hiding from the world. I won’t say why, but he’s certainly got his reasons. His former home is the Big Apple, where I’ve based a few stories after visiting there a number of years back. Given the choice between New York City and small town Indiana, though, I’m choosing Indiana every time.

What can I say? I grew up a small town girl. (Cue John Mellencamp)

So, what pulls this trio together for the story, aside from that mangled shrub I struggle to spell? (Try saying that fast five times!) It’s the lovely bookstore, Brooks Books, run by Del’s family and set in a beautiful historic building situated at the heart of downtown Bourbon Falls. Lucky for Del and Isaac, they receive abundant support from a fun cast of secondary characters, including The Sisters—three elders of the town who keep the local rumor mill churning. I love writing sassy older women in my stories and these three are a hoot. Perhaps this tendency is a nod to one of the shows I grew up watching (The Golden Girls).

And why Bourbon Falls? Admittedly, I was inspired by a road sign I saw while driving my sons to their soccer games a while back. When I turned off the main highway to take a closer look at the town of Bourbon, Indiana, I knew it was the perfect setting for the Brooks family and their bookstore. (P.S. Bourbon Street Pizza shop is amazing…)
