The sun is beating down. You’re in a dress and sandals. There’s no breeze and it’s hot. Sounds like the perfect summer’s day, right? Well, it is, only the date is 25th December and it’s Christmas Day.

Wait!

Isn’t Christmas supposed to be cold and snowy?

Aren’t you meant to be bundled up in your snow jacket and beanie as you throw snowballs and build Christmas decorated snowmen?

Well yes, if you live in the northern hemisphere you are, but when you’re in the southern hemisphere, it’s hot on Christmas Day because summer has just started.

I’ve been fortunate enough to spend Christmas in both hemispheres. For the twelve years we lived in Houston, Christmas Day always felt a bit off for me because it wasn’t the Christmas I was used to. I wasn’t rushing from breakfast at my aunt’s house back to my place to prepare for Christmas lunch if I was hosting my family. Or driving to my sister’s or brother’s place if they were hosting. It wasn’t hot and the school year hadn’t finished. It just didn’t feel right! I was still sharing it with my husband and kids, but it was a lot more mellow than what I’d grown up with.

I recall the second year we lived in Houston school was ending, the weather was hot because it was Houston and summer always arrived at the end of April. I had a jittery excited feeling in my belly that I didn’t quite understand where it was coming from. Or why I was feeling that way. I said to my daughter’s teacher “What are you doing these Christmas holidays?” she gave me the funniest look. That’s when it hit me the jittery feeling I was having was because school was ending, summer was upon us and that meant one thing – Christmas was coming! Only it wasn’t, Christmas wouldn’t be here for another seven months.

Eventually that excited feeling in my belly went away the longer we stayed in Houston when it was coming up to summer break.

I got into decorating the house and garden in early November to make the Christmas season last longer because I truly love Christmas and want to enjoy the decorations for as long as I can.

Now that I’m back living in Australia Christmas feels normal. It’s hot. I’m sharing it with my extended family, and all those jittery excited feelings are back. For my kids though, it feels a little weird, because it’s not what they’re used to. They’re used to Christmas in winter when it’s cold. I’m sure for them in a few years it will begin to feel normal for them to have a hot Christmas again.

In my latest release The Firefighter’s Christmas, I get to experience that northern hemisphere Christmas where it’s a cold and snowy. Tilly Bloom is all set to make her mark on the festive season this year in Marietta. New to town firefighter Zach Langley wants to keep a low profile but being asked to help Tilly with her event puts him firmly in the town’s attention – the last place he wants to be.

But Christmas is a magical time of year and has a way of making the unlikeliest of things happen.

Coming Home

The theme for my whole Welcome to Bunya Junction series is finding your way home. To that one place where you belong. The journey for all the characters in this series hasn’t been easy but at the end they’ve found out that family is their true home.

If you follow me on social media, you’ll know that in September 2021 I arrived back in Perth, Western Australia after spending 12 years in Houston Texas.

I can say I loved my time in Houston (except when I had to drive. I did not love driving there), but I missed my family. I grew up the youngest of four and our family and extended family are very close knit. Leaving all that behind was hard—very hard. In the end I began to feel like a stranger in my own family as I missed many milestones. So being able to come home was a dream come true.

But it also led us into the unknown.

I’d been away for 12 years; my kids didn’t really know their cousins that were close to them in age. How would my relationship be with my siblings? More importantly how would I feel coming back to a place I’d grown up in but had changed so much in the time we’d been away.

I knew my parents were excited about coming back and through technology over the years we’d been able to keep in touch which made the distance between us not so big.

Fortunately, everyone was excited and happy to see us, the only downside was my dad passed away before we could see him. But I did speak to him on the phone before he died so that was good, and he knew we were back in Perth and would be reunited with family soon.

For Yolanda, in Reunion in the Outback, she is returning home after five years away. Not as long as I had been away, but for her—since she’d left her home, she’d gotten married, forged a career, became a mother and created a life she thought she loved in the big city—it was a long time. Like me she didn’t know what her family would think or how they’d treat her. She didn’t leave on the best terms with them.

It wasn’t until she got back to Bunya Junction, with the eyes of an adult and not a teenager, that she realized that Bunya was her home and the life she had in Sydney, while good, wasn’t what she wanted anymore—being with her siblings and having her daughter grow up around her cousins was what she wanted. She wanted her husband by her side, but they had to work to find each other again for that to happen.

Adjusting to a new home, even one where you’d lived in for a long time, is hard. Nothing is the same as you remembered. Streets are different. Buildings are different. Even parts of your families are different. But beneath all the changes the love for your family never changes and reunions are very sweet.

Nicole Flockton stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in the Welcome to Bunya Junction series, Doctor in the Outback!

Where did you get the inspiration for Doctor in the Outback?

I’ve taken inspiration for this whole series from an old Australian television show I used to watch as a teenager – A Country Practice. It was a show about a country hospital and it had a town of colourful characters. I took inspiration for Waratah River Hospital – the one Scott works at – from the Wandin Valley hospital. Scott is loosely based on Dr Terence Elliot.

How is Scott different from his siblings, Jonas and Sindy? How is he the same?

Scott tends to be a bit more serious than his siblings, although as a teenager he pushed the boundaries with Ryan. He has a caring nature which all the Carruthers’ siblings have, so it makes him the perfect doctor and the perfect person for Franceen. She needs someone who gets her.

What kind of research did you need to do for this story?

There wasn’t a lot of research necessary for this story as I didn’t get into too many medical details.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

One of my favourite scenes is when Scott experiences some more pregnancy symptoms that Sindy is going through. I actually have fraternal twin cousins (boy and girl) and they were both expecting a child at the same time so I used that to give Scott and Sindy a fun twin connection. Here’s a little teaser of just what Scott is going through.

Scott got back to his office and closed the door, leaning against it as another wave of pain washed over him. What the hell was going on? He hadn’t used his home gym in the last week, so he hadn’t pulled a muscle. And the pain wasn’t in the area of his kidneys so it couldn’t be a kidney stone. The pain was in his lower belly, not concentrated on the right, so not his appendix. It was concentrated around the middle of his belly.

Realisation struck him like a bolt of lightning.

“I don’t believe it. Surely it’s not possible.”

Remembering what Franceen had told him in the cafeteria, he breathed through the pain. This couldn’t be happening. Not now.

Once the pain subsided, he pulled his mobile phone from his pocket and opened up his brother-in-law’s contact details.

“Not a good time, Scott.” Ryan sounded harried.

“Let me guess, Sindy’s in labour?”

“How—oh shit, really?”

Scott chuckled, what else could he do? There was nothing he could do about it; he would just have to ride out the pains along with his twin sister.”
