SOMEONE MISSING FROM MALAPAIS MOUNTAIN: Release day blog post featuring Kris Bock!

Someone Missing from Malapais Mountain: The Accidental Detective Book 4

It’s hard to chase the truth when you need a cane…

Former international war correspondent Kate Tessler had to trade her illustrious journalism career for her childhood bedroom after a brush with death almost took her leg. But Kate is drawn back into her old world when a journalist covering a sprawling story of political corruption is the victim of a hit-and-run. Gabriella can only communicate by blinking yes or no to questions.

Kate takes the case with her new PI partner—her sister, Jen—and their trusty senior sidekicks. Can a fifty-year-old journalist with a bad leg survive the dangers of the Arizona desert long enough to catch a killer?

Get Someone Missing from Malapais Mountain.

Okay, I might have chosen Malapais Mountain because of the alliteration, which follows the series pattern of Something or Someone (maybe someday Somehow?) followed by three words starting with the same letter.

Also, Malapais means badlands, which has a nice ominous sound.

Arizona’s Malapais Mountain is near the Superstition Wilderness east of Phoenix. I like to hike, and this plot allowed me to get Kate and Jen into the rugged wilderness. In the southwest, the desert full of cacti and spiky plants—and maybe a rattlesnake or two. Everything wants to hurt you. I’ve hiked in the area many times (and pulled cactus spines out of various body parts more than once). But to write the book, I needed to get out to the area again and take notes and photos. Not a hardship!

Here are some views in the Malapais Mountain area. It’s beautiful:

Note the saguaro, the tall cacti, which starts growing arms only after they reach 50 years old.

The saguaro cactus is limited to southern Arizona and northern Mexico. They’re easy to spot—it’s the little cacti that get your ankles while you’re hiking!

If you thought the desert was flat, nope—hiking can take you up and up! And then you have to get back down again.

You can also visit a ghost town, now a tourist attraction, if you’d rather have a burger and drink than face the desert.

Tule Author Q&A: Kris Bock was excited to join Last Stand!

Kris Bock stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the second book in The Accidental Billionaire Cowboys series, Charming the Billionaire Cowboy!

Where did you get the inspiration for Charming the Billionaire Cowboy?

I noticed lots of cowboy romance novels and lots of billionaires, with a few cowboy billionaires. That got me wondering how a ranching family could wind up that rich. I doubt many cowboys would have the free time to run a billion-dollar business, but what if they won a lottery?

Then I created the Tomlinson family with four brothers, each with different personalities. TC is the second oldest, exuberant and goofy, with something to prove. It’s been fun exploring how these people might respond to a sudden fortune and the complications it brings, such as envious friends and getting mobbed in public.

Meanwhile, Hallie was inspired in part by my friend Rachel Louise Snyder’s writing about the effects of strangulation. Hallie survived an attack from a stalker prior to this book’s beginning, so the book doesn’t get too dark, but it does address the effects of strangulation on the brain. For example, Hallie’s poor memory means she doesn’t realize TC is super rich when she meets him.

Then I put Hallie at a wild animal rescue, working with wolves, bears, and mountain lions, to show off her courage – and because animal rescue is cool!

What has been your favorite part about writing a series set in Last Stand, Texas?

A lot of romance readers, including me, love interconnected stories because you get cameos from favorite characters throughout the series. I’ve written small town stories before, such as the six books in my Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series, set around a cat café. This is the first time I’ve written books set in a fictional town built by other authors. It’s fun picking out places or people mentioned in other books whenever I need a restaurant or community member.

What song would be in the soundtrack to TC and Hallie’s love story? Why?

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when TC teaches Hallie the Cowboy Hustle line dance. I don’t name the songs they hear, but you might imagine them dancing (and crashing into each other, and teasing) to “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” by Brooks & Dunn and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain. And maybe “Cotton Eyed Joe,” because that’s so fun to dance.

Charming the Billionaire Cowboy is a romance book, but you also write mysteries. What is different about writing mysteries vs romances? Which one do you enjoy more?

Yes, I’m also writing The Accidental Detective mystery series, with a witty journalist who solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. I recently finished writing book 5, where Kate’s perimenopausal insomnia gets her in trouble. I love the narrator, who is me in an alternative universe where I get to be more fearless and snarky. It’s so much fun to get back to Kate, her sister and father, and the “Coffee Shop Irregulars” who help them investigate.

On the other hand, mysteries require complicated plotting, and I have to come up with innovative new crimes each time. With the Accidental Billionaire Cowboy series, I get to focus more on romantic relationships. I also throw in some fun elements such as ostrich farming and llama shearing. So I enjoy them each for different reasons, and it’s nice to have a break from one series when I work on the other.

What are you currently reading?

Lately I’ve mostly been reading mysteries, some historical and some contemporary, along with some paranormal romance. I recently enjoyed The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal. Heather Novak’s Blood Thinners (Love Me Dead Book 1) is one of the next books on my Kindle, after I reread A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax, from the wonderful series by Dorothy Gilman, because that one has to go back to the library soon.

THE BILLIONAIRE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS: Release day blog post featuring Kris Bock!

The Billionaire Cowboy’s Christmas: Who wouldn’t want to be a billionaire? Turns out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves.

How did you get the idea for this series?

I was browsing the top sellers in Kindle romance and saw lots of billionaires, lots of cowboys, and a few billionaire cowboys. I doubt the average cowboy would have enough free time to develop and promote an app that would become the next TikTok and get a billion dollars. So I wondered, how might a cowboy (or rancher anyway) realistically become a billionaire? I came up with a family of four brothers and their mother. She plays the lottery, not expecting to win, but simply so she can spend an hour dreaming about being rich.

And then she wins. Everything changes, and not necessarily for the better. People who win huge lotteries are advised to go into hiding, which you can’t really do when you have to take care of animals. Friends and family might demand a share of the winnings. Strangers come up with scams and sob stories.

In this first book, Josh has acted as the head of the family since his father died when he was 25. Things are tough financially, and he feels like he has to take care of everybody, but he’s comfortable with the status quo. He knows his place in the world. The lottery disrupts everything. He has to figure out how to let his brothers go in their own directions. He has to figure out what he wants now that he could have anything. This allowed me to play with questions of dreams, choices, and responsibilities.

The Billionaire Cowboy’s Christmas

He has everything this Christmas, but all he wants is the quiet ranch life he’s losing…

When Josh Tomlinson’s Texas ranching family wins a fortune in the lottery, the formerly tight-knit family is suddenly on edge. Seeking advice, Josh reluctantly contacts family friend and now attorney, Carly Garza. His business is serious, yet he can’t believe Carly’s morphed from a long-legged colt of a girl to a sophisticated woman. Besides, he knows the intelligent Carly has no interest in a quiet, rugged cowboy like him.

Carly’s crushed on Josh for years, and she plans to ask him out now that she’s back in Last Stand. She’s hoping he’ll finally see her as someone other than his younger brother’s middle school girlfriend. But when Josh needs advice on how to handle his family’s lottery win, his client and billionaire statuses put him firmly out of reach. If only her heart could ignore the sparks that flare between them.

They’re already keeping the family’s lottery win a secret from the town. Can they also hide their budding romance during the most magical time of year?

Sneak Peek Excerpt:

“I’ve been thinking about your question the other day,” Carly said after a while.

“Which one? I feel like I’ve been questioning everything.”

“What would you do if you could do anything? That one.” One corner of her mouth pulled up. “The one I tried to avoid since I’m not the one with all the money. But you were right. It is a good question. Of course, you might come up with an answer you don’t like. You might discover that you want to do something you can’t possibly do, because it requires too much money or too much of something else. Like I don’t think I could be an Olympic figure skater, even if that was my dream and even if I had your riches, because I didn’t start training in childhood and probably don’t have the talent anyway.”

“No, that’s true. Huh. You know, I’m going to be rich enough I could probably buy a pro football team if I wanted, but I still couldn’t be a pro football player. Well, unless I bought a team and forced them to let me play. Funny to think about that.” He studied her. “You didn’t actually want to be a pro figure skater, did you?”

“How should I know? I’ve never skated in my life, unless you count sliding around in my boots on frozen cattle ponds. No, that was just a random example of when the question isn’t too useful. I think it could be useful a lot though. For example, your mama said she and her friends talked about hiring cleaning people if they won the lottery.”

“Yeah. That’s going to be her Christmas present. Don’t tell.”

“Okay, but imagine if she hadn’t won the lottery.” She gestured with her free hand. “Maybe y’all couldn’t afford to hire a cleaning person with the current budget. But if your mama decided she really didn’t want to do cleaning anymore, if she hated that job and would rather do anything else, then maybe she could get a part-time job and make enough money to pay a cleaner. She could sell baked goods at the farmers market to make money. Maybe she’d have to work more hours baking and selling than she would’ve spent on cleaning, but she might prefer it.”

He frowned. “Do you think she would?”

“I have no idea, but I bet she never asked herself that. That’s my point. If we don’t think about what we love and what we hate and what we want to do in life, we might get stuck in a rut when we don’t need to be there.” Carly tipped her head back so the sun shone full on her face. “Now she can do whatever she wants, of course. She doesn’t have to take care of all of you, so she can spend more time on self-care.”

What’s that mean?” He’d heard the phrase, but it sounded like one of those New Age things that didn’t make much sense, like lighting scented candles so you’d feel calm or energized or whatever. He’d never yet met a candle that took away the strain of working for twelve hours in a freezing rain.

“It’s simply where you take care of yourself, whatever that means to you. Bubble baths, a massage, spending an afternoon reading.” Her nose wrinkled. “It’s one of those things you’re supposed to do when you have a lot of stress, but of course people who have a lot of stress don’t usually have the time or money to do those things. But my point was, Ava saw cleaning the house as part of her job, so she did it. She never thought about other options. If you don’t spend some time thinking about what you really want out of life, you’re not going to move toward your goals.”

Josh scratched his head. “Wait a minute, are we talking about Mama or me or you here?”

“Well, I meant to talk about myself but got off track.” She grinned. “Sorry. I was trying to make the general point that it’s probably good for people to think about their priorities and their wishes once in a while. Lots of people do New Year’s resolutions, but that’s not quite the same. People resolve to lose weight or get in shape because they think it’s what they’re supposed to do. I doubt most people really think about what they want to do with their lives.”

“And you’ve been thinking about it?”

“Yes, darn it! You got me thinking about it.” She tossed her head. Her braid bounced and glowed in the sunlight.

“Well, good, I guess,” Josh said. “Why should we be the only ones facing these hard questions?”

Are you working on anything now?

I’m still working on the later books in this series, and also on my Accidental Detective mystery series. In that one, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. It begins with Something Shady at Sunshine Haven: When patients are dying at an Alzheimer’s unit, a former war correspondent must use her journalism skills to uncover the killer and save her mother. Kate has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world, but can she survive going home? I just started book 5.

SOMEONE CRUEL IN COYOTE CREEK: Release day blog post featuring Kris Bock!

Meet Kate, the star of The Accidental Detective series

It’s strange moving back home when you’re almost 50. I’m living in the house where I grew up, with my father as a roommate. He’s seventy-six, barely medium height, and wiry. His friends are around his age, a bunch of nice old guys who meet for coffee twice a week. My sister Jen has been a stay-at-home mom of two kids who are now teens. It all sounds pleasant enough, if a bit boring, right?

Well, not so much. It seems like everyone is having my midlife crisis for me. Jen thinks we should be detectives. Dad is willing to pitch in, and his friends are so enthusiastic they go hunting for problems they think I should solve. Sherlock Holmes had his street kid helpers, the Baker Street Irregulars. I have my dad and his friends, the Coffee Shop Irregulars. They’re less helpers and more troublemakers. They mean well, but you know what paves the road to hell. And they’re nothing compared to Jen, who is actively trying to kill me.

If she doesn’t get me with her crazy athletic challenges, she’ll want me to pursue the hot tip I just got – even if it means investigating my almost-boyfriend, Todd. He was a sweet guy when I knew him in high school and seems just as sweet now, even if he did go into politics. But an anonymous source has accused him of taking bribes.

I’m a journalist, or I was, so I have some skills when it comes to investigating. It won’t hurt to look into it. At least that’s what I assumed, which is how I found myself dodging the Taser Thug, a falling body, and worst of all, bureaucrats.

Maybe I was a little bored, having already solved some mysteries in Phoenix. Maybe I missed the excitement of facing down warlords with armed bodyguards.

Maybe I should have minded my own business.

I have thirty years’ experience as a journalist, covering wars and natural disasters. Nothing prepared me for this.

Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek: The Accidental Detective Book 3

Turning fifty in her childhood bedroom wasn’t on her bucket list…

Kate Tessler is convinced her sister is trying to kill her. In fact, she might prefer death to Jen’s “50 for 50 Challenge,” where Kate will try fifty new things throughout the year she turns fifty. Still adjusting to her new underemployed life back in her childhood home in Phoenix, the last thing Kate wants is to prepare for paddle boarding, especially when she receives an anonymous message claiming that Mayor Todd Paradise is taking bribes. The author claims to have proof, including photos, and challenges Kate to publish the story.

Could good guy Todd really be corrupt, or is someone trying to set him up? Kate sets out to discover the truth, with help from her multi-generational, unconventional, and often unhelpful crew. She thrived reporting from war zones as an international war correspondent, but can she survive a deadly fundraising party, a close encounter with a taser, a turn at an open mic night, and a hundred-pound dog named Whiskers?

SOMETHING DEADLY ON DESERT DRIVE: Release day blog post featuring Kris Bock!

Chat with Kris Bock, author of the Accidental Detective series

Something Deadly on Desert Drive brings back Kate Tessler, an injured war correspondent forced to return home to Arizona. Kate and her quirky gang of sidekicks have new problems to solve. Kate’s father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who now claims he has dementia. They think she’s lying. Before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes, and Kate’s father is among the suspects. To save him and Larry, Kate must reveal the real murderer – but her investigation could put all their lives at risk.

What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

I’ve always enjoyed reading mysteries, starting in childhood with Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden. I read all the Sherlock Holmes stories in high school. I don’t always like cozy series that strike me as cutesy, but I don’t like too much violence either, and I demand a happy ending! Series featuring main characters who are police officers, FBI agents etc. tend to be darker and more depressing. Cozy mysteries give you the intrigue of a puzzle, the fun of interesting characters, and a guaranteed satisfying ending.

This series is called cozy mystery, but it has aspects that could make it suspense. Why make it a cozy and how do you keep it there?

A cozy typically has an amateur detective rather than a police officer or private investigator. Kate is a journalist, which is an investigator in one sense, but so far no one is paying her to investigate these crimes. Cozies avoid swearing, sex on the page, and gory violence, which fits my series. Many cozies also feature crafts or cooking in the plot and might include recipes or craft instructions. Mine doesn’t have that, so maybe it’s more of a traditional mystery. But there aren’t really strict definitions for these subgenres. I think readers of cozies will enjoy the series for its humor and its relatable characters.

Do you write in any other genres?

I write fiction and nonfiction of all types for children and adults. As Kris Bock, I also write sweet romance and romantic suspense. My Furrever Friends series features the employees and customers at a cat café. The Accidental Billionaire Cowboys will start with The Billionaire Cowboy’s Christmas, coming Nov. 8. My romantic suspense often involves outdoor adventures and Southwestern landscapes (Learn more at my website or visit my Amazon US page or Amazon UK page. For other countries click here.)

I’m writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. The Felony Melanie series follows the crazy antics of Melanie, Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie.

In addition, I write for young people under the name Chris Eboch. I do a lot of educational publishing and have also published middle grade novels (for ages 9 to 12). I’ve even been a ghostwriter on some very well-known children’s mystery series.

Here’s an excerpt from Something Deadly on Desert Drive:

“Looks like we’re the last ones to arrive.” Dad raised his hand to acknowledge his friend’s wave.

I followed Dad to the diner table where his friends sat. They greeted me warmly. This was only the second time I’d joined Dad’s twice-weekly coffee group in the month I’d been home. They were nice guys, but since I was living with my father again, I wanted to ensure he had a social life apart from me. This time, however, they had specifically requested my presence.

Which meant they wanted something.

I couldn’t wait to find out what.

I’d gotten through my first week back home, after decades of traveling the world as a war correspondent, by solving a mystery at my mother’s Alzheimer’s care unit and putting away a killer. The next month had been filled with writing articles about those events. I was ready for a new mental challenge.

I already had enough of a physical one with PT and getting used to walking with a cane.

“Thanks for coming, Kate. We need your expert advice.” Joe Washington and his wife had helped with the nursing home investigation. Joe wore his white hair trimmed close to his head, forming a handsome contrast to his dark skin.

“Glad to help,” I said. “What’s up?”

The four men looked at each other. Dad nodded to one of them. “You start, Clarence. You were the first to notice something wrong.”

“We’re worried about our friend, Larry,” Clarence said. “His wife died last year, and he remarried in the spring. We have concerns about his new wife. She is very young, maybe your age.”

While I chuckled at the thought of being “very young” at 49, I had no desire to get involved in someone’s marriage, especially if his friends’ disapproval was only due to the age difference or loyalty to the old wife.

“At first, Larry seemed happy after he married Pamela,” Clarence said. “They went on a month-long honeymoon that must have cost a fortune. After they returned, I reminded Larry to revise his will if he wanted to make sure his children got some of his money. He agreed he would. That was the last time he seemed happy.”

The other men nodded.

“He hasn’t joined our coffee group in over two months,” Dad said. “Pamela says he’s getting dementia. She won’t let him leave the house.”

I could understand being protective of an ill spouse. As a younger wife, she might be embarrassed by her elderly husband’s infirmity. But when someone was old and sick, keeping him away from his friends wasn’t helpful. Was she overprotective and perhaps making bad decisions, or was something more serious happening?

“I’m glad to help if I can,” I said, “but I’m not sure how. You need to know if Larry is really suffering from memory problems, and if so, if he’s getting the right treatments.”

Joe leaned forward. “When you were investigating Sunshine Haven, you pretended to be writing a story so you could talk to the family members.”

Tule Author Q&A: Kris Bock has lived around the world!

Kris Bock stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the first book in The Accidental Detective series, Something Shady at Sunshine Haven!

Welcome to Tule! Can you share a fun fact about yourself to help us get to know you?

I started my writing career in children’s literature. My first published book was The Well of Sacrifice – historical drama set in ninth-century Mayan Guatemala for ages nine and up. It’s still used in some schools when they teach the Maya. I’ve also been a ghostwriter for some popular children’s mystery series starring your favorite young detectives. I write for kids as Chris Eboch and MM Eboch.

Where did you get the inspiration for Something Shady at Sunshine Haven?

I was thinking about the popularity of elderly women as amateur sleuths, and also about the Phryne Fisher mysteries, where the main character has a background as an ambulance driver in World War I. Somehow the two crossed in my mind and became a woman in midlife who had decades of experience observing people and also had a dangerous job, making her fearless.

As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement someday, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. I also wanted to give Kate a reason to be adventurous, thus the background as a war correspondent.

Free String Lights Hanged on Bed Frame Stock PhotoYour heroine, Kate, is back in her childhood bedroom. If you were transplanted back to your childhood/teenage bedroom, what could we expect to see?

My family lived in Saudi Arabia when I was in grade school. We moved there just before my fifth birthday and lived in an American camp for six years while my father worked for the oil company. My family camped in the desert and shopped in the nearby Arab town. Santa visited on a camel.

After two years in Colorado, we moved to Alaska, where I went to junior high and high school. I hiked around a glacier, picked wild blueberries, and joined the junior ski patrol. Despite the unusual locations, my room probably wasn’t that surprising – lots of stuffed animals and lots of books. In high school, I had pictures of Sting and The Police on my wall.

I still have stuffed animals and books, but no rock star posters.

What was your favorite scene to write and why? (include a snippet)

I didn’t specifically set out to write humor, but a lot of early readers said they laughed a lot. That got me thinking about and studying types of humor. In my books, a lot of the humor is of the wry observational type, coming from the way Kate sees the world. Then you have eccentric friends and family, who can be wacky while also remaining believable and lovable.

Another option is slapstick. I think a little slapstick goes a long way in written humor, but I do enjoy the following snippet for its visuals. Kate is investigating the staff and residents of the nursing home where her mother is:

I turned to Tommy. “It was lovely talking to you. I hope we’ll meet again when I’m here visiting my mother. I need to speak to some other new friends now.”

Mendelson scowled and shuffled his feet.

I grinned. “Have a great day.”

I felt his gaze on me as I turned to cross the room.

Between the residents, visiting family members, dogs, and their handlers, the spacious room was a swirl of activity. I waited for a woman using a walker to cross in front of me. My leg ached, so I shifted more of my weight onto my good leg and the cane. A man to my right half turned, gesturing wildly with his arms while he told a story. I flinched back to avoid being hit.

Something slammed into my left leg. I grunted in pain as my leg collapsed. My cane swung upward, goosing the gesturing man and tangling in his legs.

The next thing I knew, I was sitting on the floor in a heap.

What are you currently reading?

I read several books a week, so that answer changes daily. Recently I’ve enjoyed the Heathcliff Lennox series by Karen Baugh Menuhin (1920s Britain), the Professor Bradshaw Mysteries by

Bernadette Pajer (1901 Seattle), and the Lord Edgington Investigates series by Benedict Brown (also 1920s Britain). I adore KJ Charles and have been rereading the Will Darling Adventures Series (once again, 1920s Britain). I haven’t yet been tempted to write historical mysteries, which means it’s easier to enjoy them without analyzing them as a writer.
