Help Wanted, Cowboy

By Nan Reinhardt

A Montana bull rider temporarily working as a ranch hand. An OB nurse who wants “a favor”. Two opposites thrown together. A treasure hunt adds to autumn magic.

When a family emergency brings cowboy Rory Pearson home to Marietta, he hires on to Juniper Falls Ranch for seasonal work. He’s hoping to explore an intriguing family legend. Armed with research and his grandfather’s stories, Rory thinks he’s ready, but nothing goes as planned. Then a sweetly sexy nurse propositions him.

Nurse Millie Sparks is tired of playing it safe. She’s been too focused on her education and career and romance and adventure have passed her by. Staying on the ranch to care for a patient with a tricky pregnancy, Millie’s interest in Rory is immediate. He offers to teach her to ride, and she wonders if the lessons could extend to something else she’s been hiding.

It’s a game of flirtation and fun. Feelings can’t be serious. But as the clock ticks down, hearts interfere, and saying goodbye just got way more complicated.

The Cowboy’s One-Year Bride

By Sinclair Jayne

He needs a temporary wife. She’s up for an adventure. Neither plans to fall in love.

Venture capitalist Telford Crow has strayed far from his cowboy roots. He runs his life with dogged efficiency. When his best friend and mentor unexpectedly dies, leaving behind a wild “before forty” bucket list—get married, buy a Montana ranch and launch a non-profit, Telford is determined to realize Cam’s dreams. Step one: interview the aspiring mail order bride.

Ayana Galloway has spent her life chasing freedom, not forever. After escaping a painful family past, she’s learned to depend only on herself and to never stay anywhere too long. Taking a friend’s place at a posh weekend interview for an arranged marriage sounds like an entertaining story she can later laugh about. Instead, she finds herself face-to-face with a broody billionaire cowboy offering her an outrageous proposal: marry him, help him build realistic roots on a Montana ranch, and create a legacy for his friend.

It’s a marriage of convenience with a time limit. And a fat fee. Ayana agrees. But life under the big sky has a way of changing the rules and neither of them is prepared when make-believe begins to feel dangerously real. Because the more time they spend together, the harder it is to remember this love story was supposed to be pretend and have a predetermined ending.

Now duty calls him back to the family ranch, and staying away from Sheriff Savannah Moody is no longer an option.

Savannah has worked hard to earn her badge in the small town they both call home. She’s sworn to uphold the law, no matter where it leads. But B. J.’s return stirs up more than old memories and undeniable chemistry. It reopens a cold case she can’t ignore.

As sparks reignite and long-buried secrets threaten to surface, Savannah must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice. And B. J. must choose between keeping his promise… or finally fighting for the woman who still owns his heart.

The Cowboy and the Princess

By Leah Vale

When a grieving European princess escapes to the American West, she feels like a fish out of water. A cowboy haunted by his Special Forces service is tasked to protect her.

Desperate to escape the spotlight after her mother’s tragic death, Princess Isabella “Izzy” Rochevelle flees to a Wyoming ranch, owned by relatives she’s never met. Hoping to heal in peace, her plan goes awry when her bodyguard is injured and she’s placed in the care of a grumpy horse trainer.

Former Army Ranger Warrant Officer Gage Buchanan seeks to leave the past behind, living a quiet existence training horses on the Starry Sky Ranch. But his new life splinters when he must unexpectedly step up to babysit a seemingly perfect princess bent on experiencing her first rodeo incognito.

Despite her disguise, the paparazzi discover her whereabouts. To guard her privacy, Gage takes her deep into the Grand Teton wilderness, where the simmering attraction between the beautiful royal and the former soldier tempts them both. But they are from vastly different worlds. Will Izzy and Gage decide that love is worth the risk of yet another heartbreak?

Bad Boy Redeemed

By Katja Desjarlais

Once upon a time, a boy loved a girl before becoming the villain in every story—except hers.

There are no fairy tales in jail. Winter Baker serves his prison sentence without complaint, confident that his sacrifice allowed his three younger brothers the chance to live and rise above their father’s legacy of a despised Baker name, poverty, bruises, and broken bones. His brothers’ successes keep him from dwelling on what else he lost that fateful night. When Winter’s offered an early release in exchange for working for the Feds, he accepts the risks and knowledge he’ll face his biggest regret.

Sela Mack never recovered from losing her best friend and protector. Winter’s last phone call still haunts her. Twelve long years, and her heart’s still in stasis. But her first glimpse of Winter tells her three things she doesn’t want to know. He’s become cold and hard. He’s still keeping secrets. And he holds the power to break her all over again if she lets him.

Loving Winter’s a risk. Loving Sela’s a liability. But walking away has never felt like a viable option.

Rogue Around the Edges

By Lydia Lloyd

When the woman from his dreams winds up in his bed…

Mr. Malcolm Brown has no illusions about his place in the world. Illegitimate, surly, and rough-edged, he manages the thriving farm on his half-brother George’s Somerset estate and has neither the breeding nor temperament for polite society. He’s sworn to never marry or become a libertine like his father. Still, his nightly dreams torment him with the sensual pleasures he denies himself during the day.

But when his aristocratic half-sister descends upon the estate with a house party of eligible young ladies so that George may secure a bride, Malcolm is unwillingly pressed into service as an escort for the sister and chaperone of George’s favorite.

Miss Scarlett Perkins is elegant, poised and perceptive. She is also a doppelganger for the passionate beauty who has haunted his nighttime fantasies.

And then one scandalous mistake places Scarlett in his bed and in his arms. Soon enough, they have to ask whether their passion can withstand the harsh light of day. Could their love be real—or is it just the stuff of dreams?

Katja Desjarlais talks latest projects and creative sparks, plus how a heartfelt gift turned into a new passion.

My mom never had a dollhouse. I had one, her grandchildren had one, but she never did.

This past summer, I decided to rectify the situation and in doing so, unlocked a whole new hobby.

The dollhouse was an intense first project. I found a partially-built, hand-made house second-hand and got to work on wiring, sanding, painting, and adding trim. Every step had a steep learning curve, from which tools I could use with the delicate bamboo trim to the creation of functional light fixtures. My husband lent a hand with the mitre saw. Our three teens helped build the fireplaces, bead the chandeliers, recovering the sofa, and sewing the bedding.

In the end, we had a family project my mom loved. Once we added two resin cats to the house and she plugged in the USB to light the home, she deemed it perfect.

After the glue and paint finally scrubbed of my hands and all the tiny cuts and scrapes on my fingers healed, I realized I really enjoyed the project.

This led me to my next venture: book-based miniatures.

The first one I did was for my novel Ragdolled. Using one of those lovely little faux storage books, I wandered into my new project with a Pinterest board, a vague idea of where I was going, and a lot of confidence in skills I had yet to demonstrate.

Apparently being a pantser is not limited to my writing.

Unlike the dollhouse (which was a 1:12 scale), this new piece was 1:16. Everything was miniscule. Everything was fragile. Everything was sticky and delicate and frustrating. My Modge Podge abilities were tested, my fine motor skills were refined with hours of aligning tiny beads with even tinier beads, and my patience was tested by the fine wires needed for the lighting. But I did it. I did it, and I was addicted.

This brings me to my most recent completed project: Serpent’s Tongue Ink. It’s the home-away-from-home for the Baker brothers, the gathering place where stories are shared, reputations are rebuilt, and unbreakable bonds are formed.

I decided to bring the town of Epson into the front flap, showcasing the water tower which loomed over the Baker brothers and divided the town between the haves and the have-nots. But I also wanted to bring the beauty of the town and the land around the tower to life around Birch Baker and Jocelyn Carter. This scene took a lot of time to layer, and I often had to walk away and return the next day to view it with fresh eyes.

Next came the inside of the tattoo parlour. My Ragdolled project had taught me a valuable lesson in figuring out the wiring and flooring system before getting into the fun details, so those were the first things I attacked. The battery-operated system is hidden under the floor, with the wires slipped discretely behind the shelving and wallpaper and an access panel rigged up with the tiles.

Another thing I learned with my first book nook was how to source, scrounge, and manufacture. Miniature kits were great for baseline items like the sink station and the cabinet, but dollhouse tattoo parlours require a lot of improvising. Felt squares folded and rolled made great towels and washcloths. A toothpick wrapped with tissue was a perfect paper towel roll. A sewing machine charm cut in half made for a decent tattoo machine. Beads of all sizes and colors brought elegance and detail, while wood shards with painted tips were ideal stand-ins for pencils.

Once it was complete, this project gave me a tangible piece of the Serpent’s Tongue Ink series. Through every step, I had to consider what Birch would hang on his walls, what colors he would choose, and how he would prep his work space. In the future, I’ll be creating miniature book nooks for River’s, Grey’s, and Winter’s stories and I already know each one will bring another piece of their world to life.

Who would’ve guessed when I jumped into an impromptu birthday gift for my mom that I would open up an entirely new creative outlet?

The Secret Ingredient to Swoon-worthy Heroes: Katja Desjarlais Shares Her Secret Loves!

Whether we call them heroes, romantic leads, or book boyfriends, some stand out more than others. Books can be memorable for their plots, their twists, or the emotions they bring out in us, but an unforgettable hero can make the difference between a good read and one to which all others are compared. Measuring up to the likes of Jamie Fraser, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Zafir Ansari isn’t an easy task for any hero nowadays, yet many do because they, like those iconic heroes, have the secret ingredient.

Damaged heroes are a personal weakness of mine. I love to read them, I love to write them. Bringing out Bo Echidna’s strength in Leashed (Hellhounds Series Book 2) was only made possible by Sage Marcellus, the librarian and art history major who sees past his jagged edges and self-deprecating humor. She makes him want to be better, to become more than the lifelong screwup persona he’s embraced his whole life. Sage also introduces Bo to paranormal romance novels, which results in him exploring one of his fears.

“Every guy knows romance is roses and wine and chocolate, but there was none of that in any of the books. So how do they count as romance? It’s kind of stressful to know your average guy could do none of that and still end up married.”

And then there’s the antihero, that complex, morally ambiguous guy who is so deeply flawed he’s almost irredeemable. The wind coming off the red flags circling a good antihero could trigger a tsunami, yet the draw to get in close is so darn powerful. Rhys Kaius, a vampire from my Haunt Vault series, is a character I both apologize for and hold up as one of my favorites. He’s manipulative. Crude. Callous. Relentless. And Lis Bruckner has him wrapped around her little vamp-killing finger. She meets him head-on, pushes back, and throws his sharp tongue right back at him.

“I’ll drain her dry,” Rhys threatened, refusing to move despite the lock being popped.

“No, you won’t,” she sighed, motioning for Heisner to open the door. “Now step aside and let me in, Rhys. Please.”

After a moment’s thought, he slammed his hands on the metal door and backed up against the wall. “Heisner,” he muttered as she entered his cell, “she reeks of cheap soap and chemicals.”

The officer’s brows rose and he tightened his grip on his UV light.

Lis crossed her arms. “You reek of dried blood and bitterness. Andy, you can go.”

Finally, there’s the conflicted hero. I’m a sucker for a good internal struggle. Toss in a little yearning for a heroine whose sole purpose ISN’T to fix him, and I’m all in. River Baker is this guy. He’s a lovely, tortured mess of confusion, self-doubt, and stubbornness and while Angelina will support him and listen to him, his journey of self-discovery isn’t hers to walk. She isn’t a prop in his story and she makes it crystal clear from the start.

Deciding she was done taking the high road and playing nice, Angelina crossed her arms and stared him down. “Is there a reason you put yourself—and, by extension, me—through this every few days? Some form of self-flagellation, perhaps?”

Now his green eyes were on hers. “What?”

“This,” she repeated as she gestured between them. “It would be just as easy for me to drop the orders off at the shop and leave the invoice for your brother, but instead you seem hellbent on coming in here every few days to destroy my zen with your sullen, cranky ass.”

So what is the secret ingredient in the creation of a memorable hero, a hero readers think about long after The End? Is it brains? Brawn? A sharp tongue and quick wit? Or it is the way those traits play off a heroine who is equally formidable? Mr. Darcy, Jamie Fraser, and Zafir wouldn’t be half the swoon-worthy men they are had they not met their matches with opinionated, strong-willed, and intelligent women who share the storylines equally. Unforgettable heroes have remarkable women demanding more than mediocrity and playbook romantic gestures. Women with thoughts, dreams, scars who exist in their own spaces on the page are the key to a hero readers return to time and time again.

And sometimes, as Bo discovered, heroines provide more than an equal match for the hero.

“That’s why I got them out on your card,” Bo stated, swinging the door open. “You’re my book sugar mama.”

Women love him, and he enjoys them, but he’s yet to meet one who’s interested in anything besides fashion, social media, and taking pictures of everything.

Then he lays eyes on the wounded, secretive Rose and he wonders if he can trust her with his past, and Rose isn’t sure she’s brave enough to hand over her bruised heart to the quiet sexy cowboy.

Chasing Carolina Jessamine

by Laurie Beach

Sometimes, beauty’s not enough…

Carolina Jessamine Boone was created to be beautiful. At least that’s what she’s been told her whole life. So, why is she still alone?

Jessa has a good job at the island winery and is making an old Lowcountry bungalow into a home—she’s content, and certainly has no need for a man. But anonymous gifts left through an old milk door raise both questions and memories of the past. Were the gifts left by the suave outsider who has designs on not just her, but the winery itself? Could they be from the boy who broke her heart years ago? Or is she about to finally discover who her father is?

The more Jessa opens her heart, the more she puts herself at risk. But sometimes heartbreak is simply a nudge onto a new, better path.

Fans of Kristy Woodson Harvey and Karen White will find this sweet Lowcountry novel full of Southern charm, family drama, and the kind of no-nonsense wisdom one finds among the close-knit communities of the South Carolina sea islands.

Tule Author Q&A: Katja Desjarlais’s heroine was a mystery to her!

Katja Desjarlais stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in the Hellhounds series, Muzzled!

Where did you get the inspiration for Muzzled?

Muzzled is set in the small Canadian city of Saskatoon, my hometown. When I was weaving through ideas for Ryan and Micah’s story, I couldn’t get thoughts of Saskatoon’s busy festival season out of my head. Having spent five summers working on a patio where I was treated to buskers and painters on a daily basis, I knew this was the perfect place for Ryan to find his artist. Every sight and smell in the book is a memory.

How is Ryan different from his brothers, Alex and Bo? How is he the same?

Ryan is by far the most responsible, loyal, and reliable of the brothers. He’s the quiet organizer of the hunt and the level head when tempers and emotions flare. His singleminded focus in serving his master and mistress has guided his every decision and action since his birth, and he sees no other path until he meets Micah. Like his brothers, love flips Ryan head over heels and leaves him scrambling to come to terms with an emotion he’s never experienced. Much like Ryan and Bo, it doesn’t take long for Ryan’s inner guard dog to rear up to protect the woman he loves, even if it means going head to head against the god and goddess he serves.

If you could spend the day with Ryan or Micah, who would you choose and what would you do?

A day with Micah would be both entertaining and thrilling. She’s a woman who seeks out new experiences, opens her mind to fresh ideas, and sees beauty everywhere she goes. Her fearlessness and determination to embrace everything in life, good and bad, would be life-changing.

Are your characters set before you begin writing or do you let them develop as you go? What did that development process look like for Muzzled?

My characters are lucky to have a name and a picture pinned on a Pinterest board when I start a new book. Although he made appearances in both Junkyard Dog and Leashed, it took Ryan’s own book to reveal his deeper nature and motivations. Every interaction he has with Micah is another insight into his character and his morals, and it’s those small pieces which come together to make him whole.

Micah was a total mystery to me from the beginning. I knew she was an artist but it wasn’t until halfway through writing the book that I felt I had a clear picture of who she is. Unlike Ryan who is quite solitary, Micah’s interactions with her friends and with Ryan speak to her values, her personality, and her desires.

What are you currently reading?

Thanks to TikTok, my TBR pile has become borderline unmanageable, but I am determined to persevere. Right now, I have Mia Sheridan’s Signs of the Zodiac series on my Kindle which I keep propped up on my exercise bike as an incentive to cycle myself fit before paddle-boarding season begins. My phone is loaded up with Tillie Cole’s Deadly Virtues, ready and waiting for me to finish the latest Pittsburgh Titans book by Sawyer Bennett.

About the Author

Katja Desjarlais is a music teacher by day and a paranormal romance writer by moonlight. She is an unapologetic music addict with an obsession for bad Bach puns despite her irrational aversion to Baroque. Her favorite words include ‘plethora’ and ‘dapper’, and she is physically repulsed by the word ‘moist’. Katja’s interest in the paranormal can be traced to her early childhood movie choices and to the collection of books she has stored on her phone for reading emergencies.

Desjarlais lives in northern Canada with her husband, three children, and polydactyl cat. Her summers are spent driving across North America with her family, while the long Canadian winters are made more bearable by attending heavy metal concerts.
