Have you ever wanted to run away with the circus?

In my newest installment of my Maidens of Marbury series, Making the Marquess Mine, the heroine does just that. Well, she hitches a ride with a travelling circus more than runs away to be part of said circus. Susanna is on a mission to do a good deed and reunite two long lost lovers. In her mind, the only way to travel safely to her destination is to travel with thefriends she’s made at Astley’s Amphitheatre (London’s most famous circus) as they take their show on the road for the summer. Her friends, when they figure out her plan, fear for her safety and send our hero after her in an attempt to save her reputation and bring her home. And the chase is on!

Now, a Regency era circus was quite different from what you’re probably thinking. No tigers or elephants or pyrotechnics ala Ringling Bros. This type of circus would become popular in the late 1800s and the first half of the 20th century. A Regency era circus included acrobats, jugglers, rope dancers, clowns, and strongmen. But the main attraction was the trick riding!

Philip Astley, a British ex-cavalry man, is often credited as the ‘father of the modern circus’. In 1768, he and his wife Patty established Astley’s Riding School in London, where Philip would teach riding in the morning and perform equestrian tricks in the afternoon. Both Philip and Patty were expert riders. One of Patty’s popular tricks involved her circling the ring on horseback at high speed, with swarms of bees covering her hands and arms as if she was wearing a muff!

Astley’s unique mixture of equestrian and acrobatic acts, followed by a pantomime was a huge success. In 1795 Astley opened the Royal Amphitheatre. The Royal Amphitheatre had a stage in addition to the circus ring and the two were interlinked by ramps. This enabled audiences to sit close to the ring. It was said that patrons could feel the horse’s tails swishing by their faces. He is credited with discovering that the ideal size for a circus ring is 42 feet in diameter. This was the optimum size that enabled him to use centrifugal force to help balance on a horse’s back. But it was Mr. Astley’s rival Mr. Charles Dibdin, who first coined the word ‘circus’. Dibdin copied Astley’s formula of theatrical equestrian entertainment by opening The Royal Circus a short distance from Astley’s.

In Making the Marquess Mine, Susanna becomes entranced by trick riding after attending a show at Astley’s theater. In fact, she becomes friends with many of the performers and of course gets into some trouble! The book is a rollicking friends-to-lovers, road trip romance that includes all sorts of shenanigans; long lost lovers, a travelling circus, an attempted kidnapping, obsession, trick riding, amnesia, scandal, and of course falling in love.

Karla Kratovil stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in The Maidens of Marbury series, Christmas at Belhaven Hall!

Where did you get the inspiration for Christmas at Belhaven Hall?

When I was fleshing out the characters for Charlotte’s friends, I knew already that Olivia would end up a widow. (I know, sneaky author stuff.) I had a clear picture of Olivia, Henry, and Max as childhood friends. It was then just a matter of timing. What better time of year to forgive and reconcile than at Christmas?

If you could spend the day with Olivia or Maxwell, who would you choose, and what would you do?

As much as I adore fun-loving Max, I would choose to spend the day with Olivia. We could have tea and spend the morning reading and discussing books. And then maybe she would take me to her bookstore in Marbury to browse and pick out something new. Or perhaps we would go to the tea shop to meet with the other Maidens and eat delicious cakes made by Mrs. Buxley.

What kind of research did you need to do for this story?

I read several interesting books about Christmas traditions during the Regency. For anyone interested, the best book I read was A Jane Austen Christmas by Maria Grace. It had a bit about all sorts of things from holiday entertaining, to caroling, to parlor games and recipes for plum pudding. A couple of interesting things I learned: Christmas trees were not widely used in England until Queen Victoria in the 1830s. And Syllabub is not eggnog but is similar in that it is a mixture of alcohol and cream. The cream was usually mixed with wine and the juice of lemons and oranges! Would you try it?

Do you have any favorite Christmas or holiday traditions?

My favorite Christmas tradition involves our Advent calendar. It is a beautiful wooden house with 24 little doors for each night in December leading up to Christmas. Painted on the front is a scene from the classic book The Night Before Christmas, where Santa Claus flies over the neighborhood on his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer.

Behind each door, I place a chocolate or little toys when my kids were younger. And each morning, they take turns opening a door to find their treat and listen to a Christmas song play from the calendar.

Welcome to Tule! Can you share a fun fact about yourself to help us get to know you?

Hello! I don’t know if this is a fun fact or just an embarrassing fact… I love to roller skate but every time I go to a rink, I end up falling and busting my butt at some point. I was recently in NYC and in Rockefeller Center where they have ice skating in the winter they now have a roller skating rink. My family and I had so much fun, but you guessed it, I fell trying to move out of the way of a small child. A whole lot of tourists got to see me fall on my butt.

Where did you get the inspiration for Saving a Scoundrel and The Maidens of Marbury series?

The inspiration for the Maidens of Marbury series was my mother and her group of friends. These women have been getting together for forty years to “Stitch n’ Bitch”. Their friendship has supported one another through a lot of life’s ups and downs. I loved the idea of a circle of friends that meet regularly, and I chose to make it a book club because that’s the kind of club I would join. The love letters they found inside the books at their bookshop just sort of showed up as I was writing the scene. Writing the over-the-top love letters became one of my favorite parts of the series.

Your heroine, Eleanor, has a list of adventures she wants to complete. What would be on the top of your own list?

I’m a real homebody. My husband is the adventurer and he drags me along. Although I always end up having fun once I get out the door! I would say that currently on the top of my list of adventures is to travel to Scotland. I’d like to poke around old castles, drink some good whisky, and enjoy the scenery.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

My favorite part to write in any book is always the scene where the couple finally tell each other how they feel. It’s so satisfying after their struggles during the course of the story to write them being together heart and soul. But for Lucius and Ellie this scene would be more than a bit spoiler-y so let me share my second favorite scene, their first kiss.

Ellie has been in love with her best friend’s older brother forever but they have always just been good friends. A death of one of their friends becomes the catalyst for Ellie to evaluate her choices in life and want to take some risks. It’s not easy to take risks and the kiss surprises both of them.

A gust of wind rustled the flaps of her cloak, and she shivered. Lucius stepped close and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. His body blocking most of the wind. “What are you thinking about, kitten?”

Ellie grimaced at her childhood nickname. Lucius was the only one that still used it. The silly moniker just proved how he still viewed her, simply as a childhood friend. She sighed. “How life is too short for some. How if I died tomorrow, I would look back and see that I’ve not done anything with my life. Just existed from day to day, but I never chased any of my dreams.”

“Hey now, that is some heavy thinking.” He squeezed her shoulder. “It’s never too late to chase your dreams. At least, I hope not. Otherwise, my life will have been a waste as well.”

Ellie turned to face him. His hand dropped to rub up and down her back.

Lucius’s lips quirked up into a wry smile. “Don’t be so hard on yourself, Ellie.”

She stared up at his familiar face. Her gaze traveled over his elegantly arched eyebrows, green eyes, a long straight nose, and that square jaw. All parts that should be entirely ordinary, but she’d loved his face for an eon. She thought him impossibly handsome. Not that he would ever know.

Coward.

Her first instinct was to step back with a clever, self-deprecating quip. But Ellie shook off that instinct. Not today. Today she would take a risk. She was twenty-four years old and had never kissed a man. Olivia was the same age and had been married and widowed already. Ellie had waited years for Lucius to be her first kiss, but she would wait no more. She slid her hands up and grasped the lapels of his wool coat.

Those green eyes widened, and one eyebrow rose in question.

Gathering her courage, she rose on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his. She had no idea how to kiss someone, but his lips were warm despite the cold, and she found kissing him to be quite pleasant. Ellie tilted her head and brushed her lips across his again. His hand at her back stilled. She dared to glance up and meet his startled gaze. But, oh Lord, what was she doing? Ellie pulled back fractionally, her eyelids fluttered closed in embarrassment.

Then the hand at her back flexed, and Lucius pulled her hard against him. His other hand rose to frame her face, and he kissed her. Really kissed her.

A pulse of pleasurable heat raced through her as his lips caressed her own. The tip of his tongue ran along her bottom lip, and Ellie’s lips parted at his wordless request. He changed the angle of the kiss, his wicked tongue tangling with hers. Ellie was no longer cold, nor confused, nor sad. There was nothing but the heat of his kiss and his intoxicating scent of lemon soap and tobacco.

His thumb gently rubbed across her cheek just before he pulled back. He leaned his forehead against hers. “Well, that was a surprise.”

Ellie opened her eyes slowly. She wanted to savor the last moments of her first kiss before she had to face what she had just done. She had kissed Lucius Grisham! It had been everything she’d dreamed it would be. But now, Lucius looked down at her with soft concern.

All of her breath left her body in one long whoosh. Her face was on fire. Lord, what had she done? What could she say to him? Panic fluttered in her throat, and like the coward she was, she turned and fled across the frozen churchyard.

My new release, A Perfect Engagement, kicks off my next series The Maidens of Marbury. The series is about a tight-knit group of friends who all belong to a gothic novel book club. One day while perusing the shelves at their local bookshop in Marbury, they find love letters tucked in between the pages of several books. The circle of friends is determined to investigate the identity of the letters’ author and find out if the lovers had a happy ending. In A Perfect Engagement, the letters help Charlotte decide what she really wants, keep her perfect reputation, or risk reaching for love.

The mysterious author of the letters the ladies find is quite over the top in expressing his love and longing. I had so much fun writing these letters! Have you ever received a love letter? Perhaps a love email? Many years ago, my husband and I were apart for three months, and I asked him to write me love letters, handwritten…in the mail. He was so sweet and sent several, even though we often talked and texted. My husband is not much for flowing words of love but his letters still melted my heart.

The effusive letters run the gambit from sweet to sensual. The mystery of the letters will thread through the series, and each lady will be influenced in different ways by the lover’s unfolding story. Here is one of the first letters they find in the bookshop:

My dearest love,

It is torture to be so near you but not able to reach out and caress the smooth skin of your cheek. To taste the sweetness of your lips. I should have never accepted the invitation knowing we would have to act as strangers for the protection of your reputation and mine. But the chance to see you, to hear your melodious voice was too much temptation.

Our time together this summer haunts my dreams, filling them with images of you. Your face turned up to the sun, the tall seagrass, and the blue sky framing your beauty.
