Tule Author Q&A: Heather Novak shares cool book art!

Heather Novak stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in the Love Me Dead series, Dearly Departed!

Where did you get the inspiration for Dearly Departed?

The initial idea behind Dearly Departed—a woman who can write letters to the dead—came to me while I was working through the grief of losing a friend after a disagreement. I wished I could write a letter to her to apologize and tell her I loved her. Then, I thought about all the cons that would come with that power. I wrote a short horror story and filed it away.

When I lost my mom a few years later, I found a letter she wrote me buried in her things and it truly felt as if she sent it when I needed it the most. I thought about the short story again but had another book series going at the time and set the idea aside.

Then, when I met Eliza in Blood Thinners, she told me she could write letters to the dead. I was so excited to finally work with this idea in a romance setting! The prologue of Dearly Departed is a nod to the original short story.

Paris’s food allergies were also inspired directly from my real life as well. (My big question is, does my garlic allergy mean I’m half vampire?) I’m thrilled and proud to have both Eliza and Paris represent something very personal to me.

This is the third book in your Love Me Dead series. Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

The third book is definitely my hardest. The first book is the MOST fun because it’s the start of the journey. I’m collecting people and plot lines along the way. Coming back for book two feels like a family reunion.

Then, BAM, it’s time for the final book. The most intimidating. This is when I discover where the cracks are in the foundation I’ve laid (picture me standing in front of a dam, trying to plug leaks with chewing gum).

Usually my popcorn, spoonfuls of peanut butter, and tortilla chip snacking reach a whole new level as I’m trying to climb out of whatever corner I’ve inevitably backed myself into with one off-the-cuff-sentence in an earlier book. (There’s always one!!!) Then when I finally make it through, I have to say goodbye. It truly feels like a breakup.

Both your heroines are psychics. Eliza is able to communicate with the dead through letters while Paris has prophetic dreams. Which of these powers would you prefer?

My knee-jerk reaction is Eliza’s power, but each letter to the dead costs one year of life and I have no self-control. I would 100% spend all my years contacting dead people, especially if I could write to Jane Austen and get her to beta read!! Ooo, this is a great spin off idea…

So, I’m going to go with Paris’s powers. I already have a knack for my gut being right, and I’m no stranger to vivid dreams.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

The art piece I’m giving away for book 3 depicts my favorite non-spoiler scene. Eliza and Paris are staying at Mina and Carma’s (Blood Thinners) bed and breakfast. They’re taking a bubble bath in a decadent tub, and it’s this really quiet, tender, moment. Paris is explaining to Eliza about how bubbles work.

Excerpt: I rested my head against hers as my heart drummed a joyous beat. This was my happy place. Warm bath, Paris in my arms, soft conversations. These were the moments where I felt treasured, even if I was doing the treasuring. My heart reached through my chest and wrapped around Paris’s, and my entire body relaxed. Muscles I didn’t know I had released the tension and anger they’d been clinging to for the last six months.

She scooped up a bubble on the surface and held it in her hand. “Bubbles are so cool.”

I grinned against her shoulder. “You’re about to explain how bubbles work, aren’t you?”

“Yes. I absolutely am.”

As she spoke, I sent thoughts to whoever was listening. Please let me keep her.

What are you currently reading?

As soon as release week is done, I’m going to read ALL the things.

My grandma and I read a cozy mystery series together (Miss Fortune series by Janna DeLeon) and book 23 just came out. She’s already read it twice and is giving me grief—I need to catch up!!

Then I get to dive into my Tule friends! I’m super lucky to have an ARC of The Year of Cecily by Lisa Lin. I need to finish Kelly Cain’s Everheart Brothers series, which honestly should come with a professional chef to cook for me while I read. Fortune Whelan, Mia Heintzelman, Stacey Agdern, Rebecca Crowley, and Leigh Ann Edwards are all next on my TBR. Also, the new Sarah MacLean series is burning a hole in my Kindle.

Tule Author Q&A: Heather Novak was inspired by The Princess Bride!

Heather Novak stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the second book in the Love Me Dead series, Grim and Bear It!

Where did you get the inspiration for Grim and Bear It?

It all started with a lifetime of watching Princess Bride! The quote “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for awhile” encapsulates this book. When I sat down and asked myself who Jake’s partner should be, that Princess Bride line ran through my head. When Poppy appeared—a grim reaper who would rather be a wedding planner—I knew I’d found my perfect pairing.

Welcome to Tule! Can you share a fun fact about yourself to help us get to know you?

I’m a retired theater organist and former co-host of Somewhere In Time Radio, an internationally syndicated show. We played big band and theater organ music, and I was honored to work with them for ten years, until their final show. Since I’m from Michigan and worked for the franchise, it will come as no surprise that I have the movie Somewhere In Time memorized. It helped make me the romance writer I am today.

If you could spend the day with Poppy or Jake, who would you choose and what would you do?

This was the hardest question you could’ve asked because I love them both so dearly. But…I’m going to say Poppy (don’t tell Jake!). I’d want her as my date to a wedding and then we’d sneak out early and watch some of our favorite romantic comedies. There’s just something so fun about watching romcoms with people who love them.

What song would be in the soundtrack to Poppy and Jake’s love story? Why?

The top song on the Grim and Bear It soundtrack is “The Madness” by Nicotine Dolls. It encapsulates Poppy and Jake’s story and was on repeat while I was working. It’s not a love song, but then they aren’t really a predictable couple, haha. The song, based on a true story, is about struggling with mental health while trying to portray that everything’s fine on the outside.

The lyrics go: “Gasping for life/but it’s all in your mind/you’ll be fine, you’ll be fine/just stay alive.” Poppy’s desperately trying to keep Jake alive for as long as possible, both so he can stop whoever is threatening his loved ones, but also because once he dies, Poppy will never see him again.

What are you currently reading?

I’m one of those annoying people who reads an audiobook, paperback, and ebook all at the same time. In audio, I’m listening to An Acquired Taste by Kelly Cain, in ebook, I’m reading History of Us by Stacey Agdern, and my paperback of Always Practice Safe Hex by Juliette Cross is waiting for me.

BLOOD THINNERS: Release day blog post featuring Heather Novak!

Blood Thinners is finally here! Do you ever just sit back and stare at your life in disbelief? I’m doing that right now as I hold this book in my hand.

Blood Thinners started as a bunch off off-the-wall what-if questions between myself and my former coworkers. “If you had to drink one flavor of milkshake every day for your life, what would it be? What if everyone we worked with was secretly a ghost? Werewolf? Vampire? Shapeshifter? What if this company was a way to recruit new humans into their ranks and you were the only one who knew what was truly going on?”

An amazing book idea formed but, two weeks before my last book release in September 2019, I received some devastating medical news. We didn’t know what my future would look like, and I hung up my writing shoes (writing keyboard? writing gloves?) for a year.

September 2020 was the epic turning point. During my writing hiatus, I came out as bisexual and wanted to start writing openly LGBTQ+ romances, so I pitched an idea to an agent. When I tell you it couldn’t have gone worse… Think green bean and cranberry Jello casserole, in the rain, while wearing a white dress bad. (Yes, that is a The Lizzie Bennet Diaries reference, thanks for noticing)

I closed my computer, told my partner I was done with writing, and sat down to watch this new show called Julie and the Phantoms, a musical by the amazing Kenny Ortega. At one in the morning, I was standing on the couch, yelling at a ghost band and crying tears of joy. I realized this was what I wanted to write, beautiful stories of love and grief and gay ghosts and mystery.

A friend of mine, who I met through the show, challenged me to write flash fiction and I played with the original Blood Thinners idea based on her prompts. The rest, as they say, was history. Through my writer’s group, I had the opportunity to pitch to Jane Porter and I’ll never forget how excited she was for this book. I’m so thankful Tule saw my vision and let me run jump into a golf cart and speed off into the sunset with it.

So here is my beautiful romance that deals with being human while surrounded by supernatural creatures—yes, including gay ghosts—complete with a mystery. And don’t forget the demon who loves sweaters. He already has his own fan club.

I hope that readers find a safe space in my book, especially if they’re LGBTQ+, use mobility aids, feel trapped in a life situation, if their closest family is found family, or even if they realize they’re just as weird as I am.

Love Me Dead, Book 1

The only thing more annoying than a ghost flash mob is a rogue vampire attack…

Supernatural investigator Mina Summers is only one undercover mission away from the promotion she’s worked for her entire career. Her assignment is simple: figure out why several unregistered vampires are going rogue—including one that ruined her best suit—and attacking humans. Her investigation leads her to Thinner, a new celebrity-endorsed weight loss company that’s shrouded in mystery and promises seemingly impossible results.

Mina’s convinced she’ll finish her mission in time for dinner, but when she face-plants into Carma Nicks, Thinner’s smart and sexy vice president, Mina’s suddenly out of her depth. Surely her heart is only racing due to adrenaline, right? Falling for—and sleeping with—a mark goes 100% against protocol, but Mina’s plans to keep her distance are as flimsy as the agency-issued ghost that resides in her apartment.

When Thinner’s secrets disrupt the peace between supernaturals and humans—and threaten Carma’s life—Mina’s forced to choose between protecting her dream career or saving the woman she loves.

Injured in a bombing, war correspondent Kate Tessler returns to her hometown in Arizona to recover. The hardest part? Seeing her once-sharp and witty mother stuck in an Alzheimer’s unit.

When an old friend asks her to investigate suspicious deaths at the nursing home, Kate limps into action. Is a self-appointed “Angel of Mercy” killing patients to end their suffering? Are family members hastening their inheritance? Is an employee extorting money and removing the witnesses? Kate uses her journalism skills to track clues, but the puzzle pieces simply won’t fit.

If Kate can’t uncover the truth quickly, her mother could be next on the killer’s list.
