Tule Author Q&A: Shelli Stevens believes in the friend zone!

Shelli Stevens stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the fourth book in the Bro Code series, Nursing the Flame!

Where did you get the inspiration for Nursing the Flame?

Both my hero and heroine, Reggie and Amber, actually show up in book 1 in the Bro Code series, Losing It. They work at the same fire station as Blake, my hero in book 1. Reggie has a somewhat bigger role in that first book. But once I’d introduced them both, I knew they needed their own story. I kind of hinted in book 1 that Amber was nursing already nursing a crush on her superior. And I love a good age gap romance, so….Nursing the Flame was born.

Your characters, Amber and Reggie, are stuck in the friend zone in this book. Have you ever been stuck in the friend zone? If so, did it work out for you as well as it did for Amber and Reggie?

Ha! Funny story, or cringe maybe? But most of the guys I’ve dated over the years were my friend before they became a romantic interest. I honestly think it’s a good way to date, because in a way you already know them. No background check needed 😂 Which is why I usually maintain friendships with these guys after/if it ends. My now husband and I were friends for probably fifteen years (okay, and on and off flirting all that time) before we decided to give it an official shot and ended up married.

hanged bunkers suitsDid you need to do any kind of research for this book?

So much firefighter research! And, cough, research on how to have sexy times when you have a broken leg.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

I love the scene where Reggie finally sees Amber as a woman, and not just one of the guys. And oh the emotional chaos that ensues!

He grabbed a second bottle and straightened up, extending the beer to hand it to her.

She leaned against the railing on the other side of the porch, and for a moment, his mind went empty. The air locked in his lungs.

The sunlight and shadows hit her in a way that obscured her face, but made her long golden hair shine.

His gaze slid lower, past the baggy black T-shirt to her legs. The pale flesh was a mix of muscles and softness, not hiding beneath those tiny denim shorts.

At the moment, he wasn’t looking at Amber—who he literally saw as one of the guys—he was looking at a gorgeous woman.

He blinked, willing it to go away.

Come back, Amber. Please turn back into the girl that’s one of the bros.

“You okay, Lieutenant?” She stepped closer, out of the sun, her brows furrowing.

Her face came into focus, and some of the tension in his muscles eased.

She was Amber again. Thank god. What the hell had that been?

“Yeah.” He nodded quickly, thrusting the beer at her. “I’m good. And it’s Reggie when we’re not working.”

“Right. Reggie,” she said softly. “It’s habit.”

Those shorts were throwing him. Though they shouldn’t have. It was a hotter-than-usual July with the temperatures already in the low 80s. Since most apartments and homes didn’t have AC, that made it kind of brutal. So, of course, she was dressed accordingly.

They’re just shorts. Just legs.

Damn, it hadn’t gone away. He willed it to leave again—the realization that Amber was all female and entirely hot—but it lingered.

Unwittingly, his gaze fell to the cartoon of a fire hose on her shirt and the writing beneath it. Only this time, he read what it said.

I Put Out.

His breath caught and his blood quickened.

Oh hell. It was happening.

His imagination took the statement on her shirt and ran wild. Mentally stripping her out of her clothes and imagining her in his bed. On top of him. Beneath him. On her hands and knees.

Sweat beaded on his brow.

In one moment that friends only filter had been removed, and he saw her in a light that until now, he’d forced himself to ignore.

Without a doubt, he’d never be able to look at Amber the same way again.

Fuck.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished up Desire’s Addiction by Mari Carr and Lila Dubois (two of my author friends!) Warning, it’s HOT!

Tule Author Q&A: Shelli Stevens shares her Won’t Back Down playlist + A GIVEAWAY!

Shelli Stevens stopped by the Tule blog to discuss the third book in the Bro Code series, Won’t Back Down!

Where did you get the inspiration for Won’t Back Down and The Bro Code series?

The Bro Code series came to me on a flight home from an RWA conference (years ago really!) I put it aside to write The Marshall Ranch series first. But I loved the idea of writing a series where the heroes have to break a certain Bro Code to find the love of their life. Meaning there will be consequences, and someone might get hurt, but…it’s also potentially the love of their life!

While Won’t Back Down, book 3 in the series, can be read as a stand-alone, you get introduced to Tori and James in the first two books. It’s a bit of an enemies to lovers trope, and I knew both characters had a passion for Comic books and cosplay, but they don’t realize that about each other though. Part of my research for this book was attending Emerald City Comic Con in 2021 with my family for research (no biggie for my hubby, he goes every year), and that was a blast. I’ve included a fun pic of the family and I in a Star Wars themed room. My teen put together an awesome outfit to cosplay as Entrapta from the new She-Ra, and my Pokémon obsessed 6-year-old wore a Pikachu dress from Target. I half-assed it in a Darth Vader dress, and my hubby refused to dress up because he hadn’t planned an amazing cosplay outfit. It’s a big thing, where people create these amazing outfits/costumes, instead of just grabbing a pre-made costume. But I had the dress ready to go in my closet so… 🤷‍♀️ 😆  #ShelliFail

There’s a chunk of Won’t Back Down that actually takes place at the Gem State Comic Con in Idaho, which is a newer convention. The plotting and writing of these fun and sexy scenes were just a blast. I consulted often with my Comic geek hubby and our like-minded friend. Initial feedback on this story has been amazing too, which thrills me so much. I hope people love it as much as I do.

If you could spend the day with James or Tori, who would you choose and what would you do?

Hmm, probably Tori. She’s that friend that pushes you to do stuff you might not have the confidence to do. She says things you probably need to hear. She’s also the one who’ll go get a mani/pedi with you, and I’m overdue for them!

This is a steamy enemies to lovers romance. What drew you to this trope? What’s your favorite trope to write?

I love enemies to lovers. I want that friction between my characters. Something about the love/hate makes the build-up and pay off so much more worth it. It can make the love scenes hotter. I also love writing the friend’s little sister trope. Oh, and the protective hero trope. I don’t think there are many I don’t love. Though I’m writing a cinnamon roll hero now, and I’ve realized I much prefer writing alphas.

What song would be in the soundtrack to James and Tori’s love story? Why?

I love this question, because I get to share my playlist I used while writing this story. Tori had a challenging upbringing, so She Don’t Break is a great one for her.

Fire for You by Cannons

The Sweetest by Taboo Sade

Come as You Are by Nirvana

That’s What I want by Lil Nas X

Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve

I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty

She Don’t Break by Josh Abbott Band

Brave Sara by Bareilles

Hot N Cold by Katy Perry

You’re My Thrill by Catherine Russell

I’m Not Over by Carolina Liar

Walking After You by Foo Fighters

What are you currently reading?

I just finished A Million Kisses in Your Lifetime by my long time friend Monica Murphy (there was so much buzz I had to make time to read it). It’s a steamy YA/NA and while that’s usually that’s not my thing, I had fun with it. Monica’s a great writer. Now I’m currently reading Yours Since Yesterday by Jennie Bernard, whose books I also adore.

LOSING IT: Release day blog post featuring Shelli Stevens!

Hey all! I know it’s been awhile since my last release (#ThanksCovid), but I’m back with a new series and I’m so excited Tule picked it up. This new series called the Bro Code shows all the rules that my heroes will have to break—and friendships they’ll risk—to find the love of their life. Each book has been so much fun to write. If you’ve never read me before, you’ll find a little bit of humor and a whole lot of spice (funny story: that actually used to be my tag line).

The three books I’ve written, so far, for this series uses some of my favorite tropes. Friends to lovers. Enemies to lovers. Best friend’s sister. Losing It, which is out today, has the friend’s sister trope. Probably my favorite one to write.

So what should you expect if you haven’t read me before? Well, hopefully I make you laugh at some point. I’ve been told I write relatable characters and natural dialogue (I love writing dialogue!). Often that my books are fun and funny. I know I certainly have fun writing them. I like to write characters you can imagine having brunch with at the end of the week. Imperfect characters who you can relate to. Sometimes, my books are on the sexy side. If you’ve read my cowboy romances, these are a bit hotter (though not erotic romance). They’re more in line to my McLaughlin series

I really hope you pick up Losing It and let me know what you think!

Want to know more about Losing It? Check out the blurb and excerpt below!

Thou shalt not sleep with thy friend’s sister…

It was basically the number one rule of the bro code, and Blake Wolfe just came dangerously close to breaking it. How could he know that the gorgeous woman he made out with at a party was his friend’s little sister? Now that he knows, she is hands off…which is easier said than done.

Kristen Watson is in Seattle for a much-needed vacation after graduating college. Though she has more planned than just hanging out with her bestie—it’s also the perfect time to ditch her virgin status and have a little fun before joining the real world. But finding the perfect guy is proving harder than she expected, especially when the perfect guy is apparently off-limits.

Blake knows trying to dissuade Kristen from the plan is useless. So he does the next best thing and volunteers to be her wingman. But helping her pick “the one” might be as challenging as trying not to claim her for himself.

EXCERPT

Blake blinked, certain he was imagining the woman in front of him. Maybe he was transposing her face onto someone else who looked kind of like her.

Nope. It was her. Kristen from last night. And instead of the fresh-faced, girl-next-door look, she had a little bit more of a vampy makeup thing going on now.

Her face was completely made up. Her eyes were lined and lashes extra-long looking; her lips were pink and glossy. Stick-straight hair hung halfway down her back. Had she ironed it?

He swept his glance down her body. Despite the fancy makeup and hair, she was dressed casually in black leggings and a loose, white top over it.

What the hell is happening?

Blake turned his back to them, needing a few seconds to get the damn shock off his face before she recognized him.

Who the hell was she? And what was her connection to the people at this barbecue?

“Hey, buddy.” James’s clapped a hand down on his shoulder. “There’s someone I want you to meet.”

Poker face, keep your damn poker face on.

Blake wiped all emotion off his face, gritted his teeth, and turned around to face them.

Kristen’s laid-back smile froze as she made a nearly inaudible choking noise. Her eyes rounded, and he was pretty sure she was silently using the same curses he was.

“Not sure if you guys have ever met,” James continued, oblivious to any tension, “but this is Kris. My little sister.”

*Losing It was briefly published as Her Wingman
