We connected with Tule author, Candace Havens, on her recent news that her Ainsley McGregor mystery series will launch with Candace Cameron Bure as our distinguished Ainsley!

Q: Where were you when you found out that A Case for the Winemaker had been optioned for film?

I was at home working on a new mystery series and our wonderful publisher, Jane Porter, texted that she had news. I may have freaked out a little!

Q: What are your watch party plans?

I’ll probably gather family and friends at my house for a sleuth-themed get-together. They won’t forgive me but I might make them come as their favorite sleuths.

Q: How is Ainsley McGregor taking the news differently from Candace Havens?

I think she would have been just as surprised as I was. The news came out of nowhere and is quite flattering to us both. I mean, she’s a fictional character, but she would be overwhelmed with gratitude just like me.

Q: Which actor have you been told you most resemble?

I have no idea. That’s something you all will have to tell me. I can say I’m super excited that Candace Bure is playing Ainsley. She’s the perfect fit!

This is the fifth book in your Ainsley McGregor series. Do you find it harder to write the first book in a series or the subsequent novels?

The only problem with the Ainsley books is there are so many fun characters and I want them all to be in every story. So whittling them down to who is most important for that book, is hard. I feel like I’m dissing my friends.

What has been your favorite part about writing stories set in Sweet River?

I love, love, love writing these books. These characters are real to me and I created a town where I would want to live––sans the murders.

In your Ainsley McGregor series, Ainsley owns the shop Bless Your Art. Have you ever dreamed of owning a shop like this? What would you sell?

I would love to have a shop like this. And I have thought about having a store like this that also sold books and coffee. Who would want to leave?

In honor of the title, A Case for the Cookie Baker, what’s your favorite type of cookie?

In honor of the title, A Case for the Cookie Baker, what’s your favorite type of cookie? I’m very good at eating cookies, not so great at baking them. I love ALL the cookies. But I’ve been a big fan of chocolate chip since childhood. I like them soft and gooey. Now I want cookies.

What are you currently reading?

Growing Boldly by Emily Ley. I love her organizers. They are the only thing that keeps me on track.

Where did you get the inspiration for this story?

I’m a candle freak. I love them. I liked the idea of a big-time CEO, who tried to leave all that behind to follow her passion. And I wanted her to be a part of a wealthy family, who had forgotten what was most important. But it all started with the candles. I love the idea that scents can bring back memories or make you feel better.

How do you relate to Ainsley, your heroine, and how do you hope readers will relate to her?

She’s the everywoman, the kind of person we all like to have as friends. Funny, dependable, and curious about the world. She’s kind. I think we need a lot more people in the world like Ainsley. I think that’s why readers love her so much. I know it’s why I adore spending time with her.

What is different about writing mysteries vs romances? Which one do you enjoy more?

I like writing both, but my preference is definitely the mysteries. I like having to figure out the puzzle. Like in Candle Maker, the killer didn’t end up being who I thought it was. Which, was a wonderful surprise for me as the writer. That’s happened to me with every book in this series. The mysteries are more difficult to write, but I think that might be part of why I like them so much. I like a challenge.

Where and when do you get most of your writing done?

I used to be a night owl writer. But a great deal has changed the last year, as it has for many people. I like to say I can write anytime, anywhere, but my favorite place is still my home office. And the when, because of those life changes, is whenever my brain and body will allow it. I’m learning a new normal.

What are you currently reading?

White Fragility by Robin Diangelo. It’s been eye-opening and I’ve learned so much from this book. I’d heard about it for a couple of years. But then I was binging Good Trouble on Freeform/Hulu. (That show is awesome and not what you think at all. Get past those first three episodes and you’ll discover something incredibly cool about social justice.) One of the flat mates is a white teacher at an inner city school. She didn’t think she was a racist, but then she started reading the book and it helped her relate to her students more. The great thing about the book is it isn’t preachy. It’s straightforward, you think this, but this is what’s really happening. I wish everyone would read it.

Tell us all about the crime-sniffing Great Dane, George Clooney!

He’s based on an amalgamation of Great Danes we’ve rescued through the years. I’ve always wanted to name one of our dogs George Clooney and my husband and kids wouldn’t let me. Oh, and Great Danes are extremely curious dogs and always getting into trouble for it. He just seemed like the perfect crime-solving partner.

What is the most difficult part about writing a mystery book/series?

Keeping track of all the suspects and weaving it all together so it makes sense. In the last book, the killer turned out not to be the killer––it made more sense for it to be someone else. But I didn’t know that until the end. (Laughs). And it’s hard to just focus on just a few characters when there are so many fun, quirky ones in Sweet River.

If you could spend the day with Ainsley McGregor, your heroine, what would you two do?

Well, I’d spend a ton of time in her shop and beg for a discount. It’s like the coolest shop ever in my head.

What was your favorite scene to write and why?

So I don’t want to get too specific, but Jake has a tough time expressing his feelings. Like my husband, he chooses to show his caring side by doing things for Ainsley. I think one of the cutest/sweetest scenes I’ve ever written is toward the end, when he gets creative with that idea.

What are you currently reading?

I don’t usually read a lot of self-help, but I attended The Rise Conference with Rachel Hollis and her team. I’m reading her book I Didn’t See that Coming. And Jay Shetty’s Think Like a Monk. I’m all about trying to find the zen these days.
