Barbara Ankrum talks about wrapping on her latest Montana Born series with the Hardestys (plus, a GIVEAWAY!).

Hello to my favorite readers here at Tule! I’m Barbara Ankrum and I’m back to talk about my latest (and final!) book in my The Hardestys of Montana series called “The Way to a Cowboy’s Heart.

If you’ve read the first three books in this series (or any one of them) you know that this series is set in our favorite imaginary little town of Marietta, Montana and follows the Hardesty family—four grown siblings and their mother—on their journey of turning their struggling Marietta cattle operation into a prosperous guest ranch. Along the way, the healing journey for each of them, the discovery of love and happily ever-afters have absolutely made this series one of my favorite to write. Each character is unique but the common thread is love and family loyalty–qualities that I think are particularly apropos in today’s climate of separation and disconnectedness. Don’t we all just want connection and love?

Liam, the second oldest brother’s story started a long time ago when he became the heir apparent of a ranch he never imagined would be his to run. In fact, he never wanted it. He had other dreams of travel, seeing the world, finding love somewhere outside this small conclave of Marietta.

When I was coming up with his story, even though I knew Liam had spent the last few books coming to terms with his complicated relationship with the land, I couldn’t resist granting his wish of getting the heck out of Dodge, at least for a vacation. So, I sent him to NYC, a place I love, truly uncertain of what he was going to accomplish there.

Now, I admit, starting out what will be a ‘cowboy romance’ out in NYC might seem weird, but stick with me. Most of this book takes place on the ranch. But sometimes I believe you have to leave your comfortable little bubble to find yourself. And when Liam randomly meets Emily, a British ex-pat who works on Wall Street on a NYC subway, something mysteriously chemical happens between them and essentially redirects their paths. I don’t want to spoil the fun of how they get together again, but let’s just say fate intervenes.

When I say fate, what I mean really is that mysterious force that puts us in a place where we get to choose our path. Go one way or the other. Some of my early readers have pointed out that this is a ‘love at first sight’ story. Fair, but I tend to think of it more as an ‘I recognize you’ at first sight story. Because haven’t we all met people who instantly feel like home? Like we’ve known them for years? Or that we definitely want to know them? That’s not to say the path is easy or smooth. In fact, in this story, it’s anything but. That’s what made telling this story so much fun.

I love our Marietta and love visiting it and I hope you do, too. I will miss this family now that I’ve wrapped up this series, but as you’ll see, none of my Marietta families is ever gone forever, because I love to integrate old characters with the new. So, I hope you’ll look for the little Easter eggs I’ve laid for you and catch up with these old friends.

I have a giveaway for you of an e-copy of “The Way to a Cowboy’s Heart.” To enter just tell me if you’ve ever had an ‘I recognize you’ at first sight moment. I’ll choose a winner on Saturday 2/8. Please check back to see if you’ve won!

Happy Reading my friends!

Best, Barbara

Tule author Barbara Ankrum shares her grandkids’ favorite cookies – snickerdoodles!

Delicious recipes straight from the kitchens of your favorite Tule authors.

Maybe it’s the soft, chewy texture, or the fact that Snickerdoodles are rolled in cinnamon sugar! Who doesn’t love cinnamon? These cookies are now a favorite of my grandkids, too and so easy and fun to make. They can get in the game, with the mixing, then rolling the little balls that become the cookies and spinning them in the sugar mixture. It’s a no-fail with kids or grandkids! The secret to keeping these cookies soft, chewy with a classic tang is the Cream of Tartar. It gives the cookie its soft texture and also a little tang that offsets all the sweetness. Here’s the simple recipe we use.

Ingredients:

2 eggs
1 C softened butter
2 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt

Coating:
2 Tbsp. white sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease.

Beat 1 1/2 cups white sugar, butter, and eggs together in a bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl; stir into creamed butter mixture until dough holds together.

Chill in Fridge for 30 minutes to make the dough easier to handle.
Form dough into 2-teaspoon-size balls and roll in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place dough balls, about 2 inches apart, on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake in the preheated oven on the center rack for 7 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. (The cookies will continue to cook on the sheet for this time, so don’t skimp here.)

Another tip: To store, put in a plastic bag along with a piece of bread to keep these cookies nice and chewy.

Barbara Ankrum talks about returning to Marietta and how her characters intersect during the holidays.

Hi Guys! I’m so happy to be back here today, talking about my latest book, The Cowboy’s Miracle Baby,” Book 3 in my Hardestys of Montana Series. It’s out today, so I hope you’ll check it out.

This series follows the four Hardesty siblings in Marietta Montana, our favorite little Tule make-believe town. Oh, oops! Did I say make-believe? Because it feels pretty real to those of us who share it.

Marietta’s been around since the beginning of Tule and personally, I’ve set two entire series there and partially set another couple of series. It’s a pretty unique thing that Tule has done, allowing their many authors to create their own series there and develop the town. As those of you who read Marietta books know, there’s sometimes (often) interaction between the characters of other series and also of our own other series.

I’ve been with Tule now since nearly the beginning, starting in 2014, and I’ve written four series here. (Have you read them all?) In this latest series, I had so much fun bringing in old characters from other series who still live in town, just to give them a call back, in case anyone was wondering what became of them! The Canadays appear in this Christmas book, and also Trey Reyes, a PI who has made appearances in nearly all of my Marietta books in one way or the other. Some of my old characters are even hey-let’s-go-to-dinner friends with the new ones. Yeah…I’m waiting for my invitation.

Also, because I love Christmas stories, I’ve written quite a few of those set here, too. Because Marietta is made for Christmas. But this one was kind of different for me. Oh, it has all the fun Christmas things—the ice skating, the sweet shopping in town, Christmas tree hunting and trimming. But this story came to me a little differently. It was just an idea of a baby being found in a church during a Christmas pageant rehearsal and…what if that happened? What would the finder do? The finder, in this case, turned out to be Cami Hardesty along with the father of one of the pageant players, Gus Claymore, a temporary large animal vet in town for a short stint.

Cami, an overextended schoolteacher who always takes on more than she should, takes on this baby and decides to try to find the birth mother and maybe fix whatever has happened. As unrealistic as that seems to her family, Cami is determined, and Gus becomes her ally in the search. He’s a widower with a little girl whose only wish for Christmas is a secret. But what we know is that she’s worried that her dad is lonely. In fact, he’s been running from that very loneliness for a few years now.  And this baby brings all those things into focus. ( I also wanted to bring awareness to the plight of foster kids who age out of the system and how unfair it is that they start life with nothing. But you’ll see how that fits in when you read the book.) But meanwhile, the real story is how Cami and Gus fall in love. These two were meant for each other. It just takes them a bit to figure it out!

The Cowboy’s Miracle Baby” was a fun, emotional and very Christmassy book for me and I loved writing it. I’ve fallen in love with all of these Hardesty siblings, and I really hope you do, too. All four of these books will be available by early February and the last one is up for presale right now. If you read it, please leave me a review on Amazon or some other e-retailer of your choice. It helps us authors so much to get your feedback.

For years, Gus Claymore has taken temporary vet gigs and carefully avoided entanglements after the passing of his wife. A Love Story with a Mysterious Twist! A quick check in from Barbara Ankrum on her latest release “Cowboy Don’t Go”. (PLUS a GIVEAWAY!)

Hi Friends!

I’m so excited to be back here on the Tule blog to let you know about my new book, “Cowboy Don’t Go.” It’s the second book in my new Hardestys of Montana series that follows the Hardesty family, ranchers in Marietta, Montana. This one follows single mom, Shay Hardesty and her long ago crush, Cooper Lane, a cowboy who trains horses and has a family history that makes life hard. Now, he’s working on the Hardesty ranch and imagining new beginnings. It’s a second chance love story with a mysterious twist thrown in for good measure.

What was my inspiration for this series? It was a trip my daughter and her family took to Montana and a lux dude ranch resort, complete with gorgeous cabins, glamping tents, trail rides and campfires. (Was I jealous? Uh, yes.) How incredible to combine the beauty of Montana, a ranch with cattle and all the outdoor activities you could want. With ranches struggling everywhere to survive, many in the wilds of the west are searching for ways to make their land work harder for them and are giving this sort of thing a shot. And I thought, why not the Hardestys, who have found ranching a challenge since the patriarch of the family passed away?

Whether we’re ready or not, transitions like this appear in our lives and challenge us. What I really wanted to explore was how a family who had splintered a bit could reunite for a mutual goal and build something new.

In “Cowboy Don’t Go,” Shay Hardesty has certainly faced those transitions as a single mom who has stayed determinedly single while raising her now teenaged son. As the family begins building the resort, the appearance of Cooper Lane breaks all of her rules about risking her heart and at the same time, draws a new kind of trouble to the ranch. With his father recently released from prison for cattle rustling, Cooper’s only goal for the last ten years has been to prove his father’s innocence. But getting a second chance with Shay while fending off the mysterious intruder on the ranch becomes his new priority. But will the fragile trust they’ve built be enough to survive a devastating revelation?

I love putting a little mystery in my stories, whether it’s real trouble coming at my characters or unlocking the mysteries of their own hearts. I sure hope you enjoy this one. If you get the chance to read it, please let me know what you think. And if you would, please drop a review for me on the outlet of your choice. It really helps us authors so much!

Here’s a little GIVEAWAY for you to celebrate the release! To WIN an e-copy of “Cowboy Don’t Go,” or any other of my Tule books, just tell me– if you had the chance to go to a dude ranch, what would be your favorite activity?  I’ll announce the winner on Saturday, 9/20. How Barbara Ankrum found excitement for her new series and latest release! (Plus, a giveaway!)

Hi Tule friends!

So happy to be back here on the Tule blog with a new book to talk about. This year, I’ve been head down writing this new four book series for you called The Hardestys of Montana. And oh, my, gosh. I have had so much fun writing it. For the first time in my long career, I’ll have all four books out in one year, which is a record for me. I’m not what I consider to be the fastest writer (understatement!) and after an annoying slab leak in my house and reconstruction, it’s been a challenge. But like always, all those challenges feed my stories and my characters’ arcs, and hopefully makes them relatable–which is really half the fun of writing these stories for you.

The Cowboy’s Bride, Book One in the series, (out now!) opens at a Dallas society wedding, naturally. Not the hero’s wedding, however. And ultimately, not the heroine/bride’s either. It’s more of a humiliating disaster for Isabella Stanford whose biggest mistake was not listening to that little voice that warned her that something was very wrong. But she’s always been the good girl, the one who never rocked the boat. Now look where it’s gotten her! Her only option now? Run. As fast and as far away as she can and start over.

Enter Will Hardesty, the handsome ex-NFL player, limo driver who rescues her and agrees to a cross-country road trip—for a fee, of course. He is dealing with his own loss as well—the awful injury that prematurely ended his career and, simultaneously, his marriage. He is not, however, prepared for what’s about to happen on this adventure with Isabella, or the detour they end up taking to his family’s Montana ranch in Montana that he left long ago. And neither one of them imagines finding love again in the most unexpected way.

Here’s a snippet:

She had a hard time imagining how shortsighted that woman must have been to have let a man like Will go. But then, here she was, talking about love as if it were a binary thing that one could take or leave. It wasn’t. Love, she’d discovered, was fluid and complicated and had a will of its own. Love chose you, not the other way around. And for all of her bluster and denial about never stepping foot in that emotion again, she could feel it—against her will—eddying up inside her as she lay beside him, feeling protective of him, ready to fight all the trolls who thought they knew him better than he did himself and would dare call him out.

The feeling took a different shape than it had for Theo, or any man for that matter, and had a different vibration even that settled in her chest whenever he was near. And before she could stop herself, she leaned forward and kissed him.

The first touch of her lips to his surprised him, and her for that matter. She hadn’t intended to kiss him then, or at all tonight. But there he was, looking all tousled and telling her things he probably never shared and she just … just … kissed him.

And oh! He tasted sweet, just as she’d known he would. Like a craving for her favorite gelato or, to tell the truth, freedom, she’d craved another one of his kisses all day. She began to pull away, to apologize for the uninvited kiss, but his answer was to close the gap between them with another kiss, this one better than hers. This one—if she’d been standing—would have buckled her knees. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer, until she was beneath him. She savored the weight of him, all the hard muscled strength of him holding her.

She forgot to think as his mouth moved over hers, his fingers buried in her hair, his breath coming hard and fast against her cheek.

Suddenly, he broke the kiss, touching his forehead to hers, eyes slammed shut. “I haven’t stopped thinking about kissing you all day,” he whispered.

“Neither have I,” she said, stroking the back of his neck, feeling the heat there.

“I told you that you wouldn’t have to worry about…”

“Does this feel like I’m worried?” She curled her fingers into his hair.

He smiled and kissed her again. “No.”

The Hardestys of Montana series follows four siblings in the Hardesty family, Will, his single-mom twin sister, Shay, the baby and fixer of the family, Cami, and Liam, the one holding things all together on the ranch. Book 2 Cowboy Don’t Go is already up for presale!

I hope you’ll love this series as much as I do.
